"some music was meant to stay underground..."

Relapse Records Store Opens

Matthew F. Jacobson, President of Relapse Records, Inc., has announced the opening of the first Relapse Records retail store. The Relapse retail store opened its doors to the public on Friday, June 1st, 2001 on the corner of Fourth and South streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

On the topic of the opening, Jacobson states, "The opening of the first Relapse Records retail store is something that we are very excited about. The store will allow us to become a bigger part of the music scene, not only in Philadelphia, but on the entire East Coast." The opening of the record store follows Relapse's ongoing sponsorship of underground shows in the Philadelphia area. "Opening the store has long been a dream of mine and it’s great to finally see it materialize," Jacobson says. "Our focus will continue to be on quality independent and underground music."

Jacobson founded Relapse Records in 1990 and has since developed an expansive roster of underground acts that includes Neurosis, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Nile, Amorphis and many more. The label has pioneered many firsts within the independent heavy music market, including becoming the pre-eminent metal mail order in North America and the sponsoring of stages at national metal fests. The opening of the retail store is no exception.

"Celebrating our 10 year anniversary just last year, we see the opening of the Relapse Records retail store as the ideal way to start Relapse’s next 10 years," Jacobson says. "There are many more great things to come."
