"Heavy: The Story of Metal," premiering Monday - Thursday, May 1-4 at 9PM ET/PT each night traces the evolution of heavy metal music and culture, from its dark, grim beginnings in Birmingham, England to the worldwide force that it remains to this day. In a series of four themed hours, "Heavy: The Story of Metal," explores four decades of music, each hour examining this powerful and often misunderstood genre, from metal's pioneers to its love of glam and excess; from the fight for metal's rebellious soul to its storied flirtation with the devil:
Episode One traces metal's roots in the late-60's in the bombed-out industrial town of Birmingham England to the spectacular rise of Kiss and "glam metal" in the early 70's.
Episode Two examines metal's growing pains during the 70's when both high-brow rock critics and punk rock threatened its very existence. By decade's end, bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Def Leppard gave birth to what became known as "The New Wave of British Heavy Metal." Episode Three sees metal thrive in, of all places, sunny California. Van Halen, Poison, Motley Crue -- it's the world of hair metal. And, keeping everyone's Jacuzzi-soaked ego in check, a little film called Spinal Tap emerges.
Episode Four takes a walk on the dark side: Guns N' Roses, Metallica, thrash, grunge, and how the music and images of Marilyn Manson became associated with the Columbine massacre.
Told from the perspective of the musicians, promoters, writers and fans who have kept metal's flame alive for four decades, "Heavy: The Story of Metal," contains revealing, hilarious and sometimes shocking conversations. lol yea it will suck! Hey what about slayer? LOl I would have love to see them try to get bands on the show that are unknow but still know!!!! There is great metal out there, and metalheads need to know about them. Like for once I would love to see some f***ing underground metal acts get some credit for making metal what it is today. Four nights to cover the entire history of metal...ummm...probably not enough. I mean the Civil War PBS documentary got a ton more episodes...and that was only covering roughly five years. We are talking about decades here. Some of the stuff will be alright...at least they covered some of the old stuff...Lemmy is on there as well as Tony Iommi and Rob Halford...but it does seem as though the 80's scene is heavily represented...my guess as to why that is...the generation that grew up on that stuff is about 30 now...and makes up a lot of VH1's audience. Just pandering to the crowd I guess. We'll see how this thing ends up...probably mediocre at best.

I would love to see what happened if this f***ers discovered black metal...or death metal, sh** that is really dark, and actually evil. I want to see Mayhem on there. Or Chris Barnes on there, talking about his CC days when he wrote stuff like Entrails Ripped from a Virgin's c***. Maybe some Napalm Death too. Dismember or Dimmu Borgir would be great as well.
That aside, I'm curious to see the outcome of these mainstream people putting their vision to film. We'll see how wrong it is.

sadly that garbage like kiss and 99 percent of the groups on there were even categorized as metal. well all i can say is that you cannot fully document the history of metal being an entity like vh1, i mean specially since they have never played any metal in their channel or have any material on where or how the many different subsections of metal really started. Yeah, you all pretty much echo my thoughts. VH1 seem to think Poison and Motley Crue are some of the baddest metal bands on the planet and they aren't even metal. Of course neither is GnR,, Van Halen, Def Leppard or Kiss. But then neither were the majority of the bands on there "least and worst metal moments" lists either. Hell, it kinda sounds like VH1 have no idea what metal is. Who the hell gave them the idea to do a series on something they have no idea about?

1. The Black Sabbath stuff into Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, etc, etc.
2. The emergence of thrash/hardcore metal and a special segment about Pantera and R.I.P Dime.
3. A look at the foreign scene with emphasis on Scandinavia. Huge metal scene. Additionally, a look at the real death metal and underground scene.
4. Some new music and the future of metal with a look at bands like Trivium, God Fofbid, and As I Lay Dying.
That's my 2 cents.

I'm not saying people like Fred Durst and Brett Michaels aren't part of the (pop-aspect) of the metal movement, and well known but sh**ty acts 'do' deserve a slice of the credit, but VH1 isn't going get to the gritty unknown acts that were and are revolutionary, that just doesn't get ratings.

Those guys moved mountains in the world of heavy music as far as I'm concerned but the most unknown act most people are familiar with is Motorhead....And lots of people think they are "in the know" for acknowleding said band, if just for "Ace of Spades".
We're going to get the fairytale version of all this. Nothing about Death, nothing about Venom, certainly not anything black metal....Maybe a five second cut of Cradle of Filth, which will be "THE DARK SATANIC UNDERBELLY OF METAL" as far as VH1 can tell......I'm ranting....and I'm done....case f***ing closed.

on inventing the Heavy Metal sound like The Kinks, Led Zepplin, Blue Cheer, Cream,
The Yardbirds (you have to understand early metal was bluesy), Jimi Hendrix and
The Experience, early Fleetwood Mac (dont laugh Judas Priest did a cover from that
band) and somewhat later in their career The Beatles I mean shiit listen to Helter
Skelter. Plus in the seventies like bands like Nazareth, Blackfoot, Humble Pie,
Foghat, BOC and so forth and I guess they forgot about the NWOBHM in the 80's too
typical corporate bullshiiit much like their bigger brother MTV.

4. Some new music and the future of metal with a look at bands like Trivium, God Fofbid, and As I Lay Dying, Lamb of God.
