Judas Priest Consider Assembling North American Metal Package Tour Next Year

In a recent interview with Lynn Saxberg of The Ottawa Citizen, JUDAS PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing revealed that they're considering putting together a multi-act metal package to tour North America next summer, but they also want to make another album.
"It's pretty hectic," Downing said, noting that he'll be celebrating another birthday on stage this month.
"I think things have turned full circle and for bands like ourselves and [BLACK] SABBATH, there's not too many of us standing these days, still intact from the '70s. Bands like that basically got the ball rolling with this heavy metal thing all those years ago and I think it's one reason we're here today."
According to Downing, there is a whole new generation of kids itching to rock out to songs like "You've Got Another Thing Coming" and "Hell Bent for Leather".
"It's still guaranteed that PRIEST has a great following," said Downing. "Time moves on, and obviously people take their music with them. They're not suddenly going to start listening to jazz or classical music just because they're of a certain age.
"There's a perception that you should mellow out and do what your predecessors did, but that's not the case and it never will be. If you were a fan of JIMI HENDRIX or the CREAM or BLACK SABBATH or JUDAS PRIEST or whoever it is, you take your music with you through life, don't you," he said, "even though you might not always admit it to your next-door neighbor.
"But the great thing is now, we've got the best of it all because people are bringing their nieces, nephews, sons, daughters, even grandkids to the show. There's a new interest, probably because of the Ozzfest going on for quite some years. Parents are saying, 'You think that's metal, you want to come and see a good band.'
"Obviously, with Rob [Halford] back in the band, things are much bigger and better and more the way they used to be."

Yeah, you gotta wonder how many big metal tours the US can support. Altho more Gigantour-sized tours will not hurt anything. It really was no where near the caliber of Ozzfest or Sounds of the Underground. But Priest could probably pull more of an audience anyway than Gigantour anyway.

It might replace Ozzfest for you personally, but it certainly will not overall. No first year tour will oust such a monster like Ozzfest. In fact, based on Priest+Anthrax tour attendance, I think JP would be luck to mount a Gigantour-sized tour, which is about one tenth the scale of Ozzfest despite the quality of the bands. Bottom line is that Ozzfest does have a lot of good bands despite the occaisional lemon band. Or is that llama band? And they always have some excellent main stage bands as well.
Still, I'm all for a big band putting together a decent tour. But Priest doesn't excite me as a headliner.

I too have decided to stage a packaged metal tour, headlined by the last few groups who haven't "come back" in the last 5 years. I think it's time for DIO to make a comeback, and maybe group them with the Scorpions. What's Journey up to these days? I need a third "controversial" band in there to get all the forums ablaze about how my tour is already hitting the skids in it's first year, but you know what they say, any attention is good attention. and of course, on the second stage line it with underground metal bands who are just happy for the exposure and a reason to wear there spikes and leather in public.

Im a big supporter of any amount of touring by any metal bands be it single shows or these packages but i and alot of people would liek to see these tours coming to other countries for example fukn australia and nz and well thats about the only place with a large metal fanbase that doesnt get these cool shows, altho it would probably cost alot to get the whole thing goin down here i do believe it would be very sucessful, any1 agree with me on this?

Well as a huge fan of Judas Priest and ALL European based metal bands...I must say the idea of Priest doing a metal package tour is very cool because they're old school and old school metal kicks a$$ over everything else the crowds are awesome at the concerts everyone is there to fckn jam and have a great time WITHOUT having to worry if ya do take your teens to see them...I just took my 2 teens to see Priest about a month ago it was my sons first rock concert and I have to say it couldn't of been a better first concert for him AND people had younger kids there and thats what keeps this era alive hats off to Priest and all old school metal ya'll RAWK!!! PS Rob sounded fckn AWESOME hasn't lost a thing!!
