I for one love it.

It's a fantastic record, about one song too short IMHO but I can't take my ears off of it. It certainly seems more balanced than other records, almost evenly split by death and clean vocals. The instrumental performances are great too.....Not enough guitar solos though, thats my only gripe and it's a small one.
The keyboards really add an interesting layer as well considering how they've always been there but have generally been lower in the mix until "Damnation".....As always engrossing lyrics and a brilliant song sequence. I hope the next record is as punishing as "Deliverance" and as lush and varied as "Black Water Park" and "Ghost Reveries"....if thats possible...

Well this album took a few listens before I thought it was any good, I wrote to the band and got an answer, my message was pretty negative, but this was before I listened to it again, I thought it wasn't thought out and it was crap, but after listening to it again it was clear that they did indeed have a decent album. Their worst i must say but still decent. The vocals are hard, the riffs are still amazing, the drum entry on Beneath the mire I enjoyed, but otherwise I didn't much like it. Still life is by far stil their best album. And before I forget, Opeth is now selling out sadly, Mikael in an interview had said that he would make a 3 minute ballad that he wouldn't even like just to get to more of an audience. Honestly if you are going to sell out at least do it with something you like.

I agree not their best....but very listenable....I'd rank it next to "Still Life" and "Black Water Park" as near-perfect.

The clean vocals are much more expressive, and he's built his range as well. The death vox were 90% spot on (I especially liked being screamed at seconds after the very mellow intro) Opeth can still catch me off guard.

I like the role of the keyboards and bass being higher in the mix as well. It makes the music dense allows the sudden shifts to sparse acoustics and rhythm interludes that much more dynamic.....

Somehow the drum performace let me down a little....Not so much the performance but the style and sound....much less focus on symbols this time out.

Opeths most lush feeling album, and very clean production too considering Steven Wilson was not involved.

I'm still giving it a 9.5 out of 10 as with every Opeth album, the more I hear it the more I enjoy it.

Just out of curiosity, have any of you ever heard Ayreon?, the latest Ayreon album is a 2cd concept album, with 12 guest singers including, James La Brie, Devin Townsend and the great Mikael Akerfeldt, Mikael lays down some of his best clean vocals on this album as well as bringing a great atmosphere to the experimental album, I highly suggest it to you all.

Never heard Ayreon, but I have heard of them.....What do they sound like roughly?

It is almost impossible to roughly describe Ayreon haha, they have elements of everything, Hes a highly respected musician, he has played on hundreds of albums and stuff but not as part of the band, like 'guest solos' and stuff like that, and he has a few projects but his main focus is Ayreon which is a Rock/Metal Opera, with many vocalists from metal bands. Check him out- www.ayreon.com, I must add that Mikael Akerfeldts voice on the latest Ayreon album (He Plays Fear) is unlike anything I have ever heard on any of Opeths albums, hes does something he calls a Mellow growl, which is him doing death metal vocals but trying to say the words very clearly, its very very interesting, And his clean vocals are some what folky, and all the other vocalists male/female are all excellent!
