Unearth Frontman Megadeth's New Lineup Is 'A Total Horseshit Joke'

Band Photo: Megadeth (?)
Abrasive Rock recently conducted an interview with UNEARTH frontman Trevor Phipps. An excerpt from the chat follows:
Abrasive Rock: With all the reunion shows going on right now is there one that really excites you?
Trevor Phipps: "I'd love to see TESTAMENT. I guess they're back together with Alex Skolnick, and the all original live up. I did just have the honor to see ANTHRAX play in London at the Download Festival. We played the same day as them about 3 weeks ago. That was killer. It was a favorite of mine back when I was a kid, so that was really cool to see, but I think the two main bands ANTHRAX and TESTAMENT.
Abrasive Rock: Is there one that you think is a complete joke?
Trevor Phipps: "MEGADETH, I would say, because it's just him. There's no Dave Ellefson, there's nobody. It's just Dave Mustaine. It's kinda ridiculous. Nick Menza's not there, it's just Dave Mustaine. It's a joke. It's not really MEGADETH. I think it's a total horseshit joke."

yeah, Megadeth was a pretty big influence on them to boot.....
But Mustaines mental and emotional wiring makes him even more of a control freak than he used to be. Megadeth is just a more marketable name than Dave Mustaine (he's said so himself) as these last few albums were completely his, without any outside input a sameness has kind of settled into Megadeths sound.
Fans including Unearth, can get a a bit turned off by that, but it's still no reason to attack a band that made such a mark on metal history.

Well I can expect nothing more than the crazed Megadeth fans to flood in with derogatory comments. Already they've missed the sentiment in which the comment was made, which I cannot wholly disagree with. I mean if JAmes Hetfield went on touring as Metallica with a band full of somebodies other than the current lineup (and/or Jason), someone would have to make the same comment.
I also have to say that Unearth latest album is some good sh**. I listened to it far longer than the latest releases of Metallica or Megadeth. I'd say they are the best metalcore band out there.
And to comment on one other related point - I'd love to see Testament on a big tour and big stage in the US. Those guys have paid their dues and more and the only shows I see them on are tiny little clubs still. Get them on Gigantour2 or SotU2 or Ozzfest (mainstage) already! Anthrax too for that matter - new or old lineup.

i think unearth is a f***ing joke they are not even close to dave's talent megadeth is dave mustain rather they like it or not so unearth go and play with your balls and sing better and play better music and megadeth f***ing kicks a$$ and anthrax blows but testament is one of the best bands out there at this time they are even better than Metallica so unearth go and play good metal music instead of talkling sh**

Not discounting the fact that Megadeth had, and I repeat had a big influence on the metal scene does not dismiss Mustaine as being a total idiot. The things that come out of his mouth are absurd. I think Unearth is decent but not in the position to comment on anybody. They should worry about themselves. As far as metalcore goes Unearth and every other god damn band out there can't even touch the level that Lamb of God is on right now. Unearth should strive for that and leave crazy a$$ Mustaine alone.

LOL!!!!!
*climbs back into chair*
Very well said (laidtorest and deathbringer)...Unearth are still babies by anyones definition (formed 98-99 if memory serves) and the remark is a bit vicious (Megadeth aren't a joke, but Mustaine is presently becoming one) but Phipps makes a point.
So many of Megadeths fans only "know" Dave Mustaine they dont consider the original cast (Friedman, Ellefson and Menza) or even the second lineup for that matter to be mindless hired lackies.......
I dont think anyone regards Cliff Burton or Kirk Hammet as lackies in the Metallica roster. So why dismiss the impact of the guys who very obviously helped Megadeth off the launch pad.

in my ancient, humble opinion, Megadeth died with Gar Samuelson the same way Metallica died with Cliff Burton. Granted Megadeth did one great album without him, Rust in Peace, it was still nothing compared to Killing is my Business or Peace Sells. go back and listen to Black Friday for further proof of that.

(dear Post 10) .. ur a complete dumb f*** for saying that.. old skool is where it came from.. so respect,. ur probably jst 1 of these metalcore dudes that think his cool bcoz they make a bit of heavy and fast with stupid growls, dude any1 can do that.. but old skool thrash and even today.. take it to a new level and explore.. ur just dumb enough said, megadeth r brutal.. not my fave but my respects r there. Testament kicks ass. so does old anthrax
14. writes:
Alright kiddies. Its quite frank to anyone who actually follows the artists, instead of just music they put out that Mustaine is slowly digging himself into a deeper pile of sh**. That being said Unearth is a great band but again shouldnt be commenting quite like he did. Obviously Trevor being IN the music scene himself would know alot more then most of us, and growing up idolizing Megadeth, and seeing the piss-poor direction they have taken could easily make him sour.
15. writes:
First off, CLiff Burton wasn't ever a lacky for metallica tht was what Jason was. Thats why james and everyone picked on him and sh** like that. Megadeth aren't as good as they used to be but they still rock hard as f*** even with out the original line up. I do agree thought that some of the stuff that Dave says are unbelievably stupid he is still one of the best guitar players alive today. Personally i'm glad he got kicked out of metallica. If he was still in metallica maybe they wouldn't have sold out and started to suck so bad but then again i don't know.

Mustaine is still a crazy a$$hole.
courtesy of my Dell homepage.....funny, in kind of a sad way stuff....
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The lead singer of Megadeth has sued the band's former bass player for allegedly using the name of the group without permission in an ad for musical equipment.
David Mustaine claims in the lawsuit filed Monday in Superior Court that he and David Ellefson entered into a settlement agreement in February that restricts the guitarist's use of the band name.
"Ellefson shall not use, or authorize anyone else to use, the work or mark 'Megadeth" to advertise, market or promote any person, band, company, organization, product or services without Megadeth's prior express written permission," according to the lawsuit.
Mustaine said an ad in this month's issue of Bass Player features Ellefson holding a pedal tuner for bass guitars and includes the names of several bands he is involved with - including Megadeth.
Mustaine is seeking unspecified compensatory, punitive and exemplary damages.
Megadeth was founded in 1983 and released a greatest hits album, "Back to the Start," last month. Ellefson appeared on albums from 1985 to 2002 until he got into a disagreement with Mustaine and refused to rejoin the band last year.

22. writes:
Well, Dave Mustaine is a f***ing christian these days, so I've thrown away their latest album. I've actually never liked megadeth. The only exceptions are symphony of destruction and trust. I heard megadeth was going to play on some festival a few months back, but when dave heard there were satanic bands there, and he got them off the lineup - ALL OF THEM. I hate christian bands (like megadeth are now) and I'll never listen to their preaching for as long as I live no matter how good their music is (it usually sucks anyway). Testament though, rules the earth, along with slayer, pantera, old metallica (they are christian too now I heard..), anthrax, venom, sodom, kreator, exodus, destruction, nevermore, iced earth (stormrider).... etc. etc. etc. :)
all of these rule quite alot more than megadeth will ever do.

24. writes:
As i already said Unearth is the f***ing joke.
Megadeth is an awesome f***ing band, and none of their stuff sucks.
What the f*** is UNEARTH anyway. What are they hardcore or metal. Help me out here!
Every breakdown in Unearth songs sound the f***ing same. It's stupid. When MEGADETH can make up new stuff. And don't have to repeat something. (I have know idea what I'm talking about. I'm f***ing drunk.) But overall MEGADETH ROCKS! and UNEARTH SUCKS!
25. writes:
Megadeth and Unearth have a lot in common actually.
Vocalists who cant sing well, decent lyrics, and talented musicians behind guitars, bass and drums. One is just young disrepectful and full of themselves and the other is old, crazy and full of themselves.........
Oddly both bands are representing their age and their genre quite well I think.

27. writes:
I generally agree with RememberMetal, i personally as a die hard fan of metallica and an ex-fan of megadeth . . . i feel the way about megadeth that a lot feel about metallica, megadeth doesn't feel like megadeth anymore it feels like I'm whack out of my mind with the love of myself and god mustaine, he has taken away the core that is megadeth and proclaimed himslf a deity of his band. And i thought christians weren't supposed to pray to a false idol . . . i like megadeths work and think they have greatly contributed to music, but mustaine needs to get f***ing over himself.

29. writes:
i don't think this is supposed to be a reunion anyway. this is just the new line up for megadeth. i don't think he ever mentioned that it was a reunion. any ways megadeth kicks major ass!!! and poster 22 your a really stupid close minded bunghole for typing that ( though the bands you mentioned at the end are great! :D ) !

30. writes:
megadeth kicks ass. but the "megadeth" that is currently touring bares little resemblance to the megadeth that we all loved.
unearth also kicks ass. i had barely listened to them before i saw them at SOTU. they played a badass set and since then i have acquired a collection of their music and i really enjoy what they have to offer. they blend genres well and have a solid (and talented) sound.
and as a reply to post 28. the singer was asked a question by the writer of the article which he gave an honest response to. as a response to the question "Is there (a reunion tour) that you think is a complete joke?" he gave his answer. i would have to completely agree with his response and i do think that dave mustaine destroyed what we know as megadeth and is parading around under a false pretense. similar to what is going to happen when "guns n' roses" tour in support of their cd. its a joke. its an empty shell of a once respected band.

34. writes:
LOL!
Well Unearth are 7 years into their career, I think they have a pretty good shot at 20. Their doing something right.
Again, neither Megadeth nor Unearth are my favorite band but Dave Mustaine really has gone over the wayside. He picks which bands tour with him based on ---RELIGION!!!--- Are alarms going off for anyone else there?...... I was thinking race, sex and creed were meaningless concepts in metal.... (kind of like how companys cant hire people based on those things). If your a good band your in, if you suck keep practicing.....That should be the only barometer in my opinion.
Mustaine is just like every other super successful rock star out there....He became famous based on his ability and that was great. Then despite all kinds of success he still couldnt be "happy" because he never surpassed Metallica.... Who he STILL holds a grudge against, he needs to grow up and accept his fate already.
poor baby...
So then he takes it upon himself to consume drugs and alcohal until he's a bloated half-brained version of his old self. Someone tells him he's going to die on this track, so he quits the drugs and booze, finds God and surrounds himself with --handlers-- that only allow him to hear what he "wants" to hear. This gives him a warped sense of self importance and rightousness. Now he has the nerve to say this is a reunion tour, despite 3 out of 4 orignal Megadeth members not being in the lineup......Thats false advertising, and Megadeth would not have had the same legacy without Friedman, Menza and Ellefson period.

35. writes:
thats a pretty darn good synopsis of the megadeth situation. it is bullsh**. and i do agree that if unearth continues to grow and stays at the same pace, we will remember unearth in 20 years. they are putting out some solid tunes right now. and you misspelled companies.

37. writes:
Megadeth rules, I've seen their new lineup live, along with Exodus' new lineup. And I don't give a sh** if they're new, Megadeth sounded like Megadeth and Exodus sounded like Exodus. This talentless f***er from Unearth doesnt even play an instrument, and has no room saying Mustaine is a joke. Dave Ellefson, Marty Friedman and Nick Menza are very talented, but rarely are they credited with any musical accomplishments in Megadeth, other than touring and recording. And even that is limited, Dave Mustaine wrote and recorded the bassline the the song Peace Sells, and has written 90% of their other music. And in case you guys haven't noticed, Marty Friedman is more whacko than Dave Mustaine is. Has anyone heard his solo career? It's barely metal. And he's most of the reason the album Risk is so terrible. So f*** Unearth, even if it were Dave Mustaine alone on stage, they could never compare to the greatness that is Megadeth.
38. writes:
First off, I got to point out what a loser "Remembermetal" is b/c Friedman and Menza were'nt in the original lineup, in fact they were the 3rd lineup. Ok, the point I want to make is what is with the f***ing racism in metal today? That is exactly why this rap bullsh** is so popular...b/c metalers are so racist toward other metalers. So as long as it's metal then f***ing rock. And who gives a sh** about a f***ing reunion, the tunes are the same.

41. writes:
1st of all, unearth is in no place 2 insult megadeth. theyre so much better and a lot older. also, wat u idiots dont get is megadeth is dave mustaines SOLO BAND. he rights all the music. it doesnt really matter who's backing him up. its him playing and his music. U dont go 2 c yngwie malmsteen's drummer. u go 2 c yngwie. u dont get 2 c joe satrioni's base player. u go 2 c joe. how do u think mustaine keeps on changing the lineup if it isnt HIS band. the bands just called megadeth cause its cooler than dave mustaine.

42. writes:
i think Trevor is entitled to his opinion. he was ask a question in an interview, and he gave his honest opinion. plus Megadeth isnt even the anymore it is jujst Dave trying to keep his legacy going. they shouldnt be Megadeth anymore they should be called MegaDave! i love Megadeth they WERE a great but now i dont think MegaDave is a good band, they are done and he needs to realize that! plus UNEARTH F*CKING RULES!
43. writes:
Heh.
Megadave.
The reason "Risk" was so terrible isnt because of Marty Friedmans influence it's because Lars Ulrich said in an interview regarding Megadeth that they "don't take any risks". "Risk" was the respose to that, a somewhat different but very ho-hum album. That whole endeavor was a half-assed attempt to prove Metallicas drummer wrong.
Friedman, Menza and Ellefson were the first fully realized and lasting lineup but generally speaking when most people picture Megadeth it's on a poster with Mustaines twisted face at point blank and these guys standing in the background. I'm not saying Megadeth wouldn't have taken off without these guys in specific, but they happened to be onboard when certain aspects of Megadeths critical and commercial success took hold.
And like certain members in Metallica, Mustaine is full of himself and his hired posse of handlers egg him on to be an even more tremendous a$$hole in the media than he really is as a show of strength (the pending lawsuit against Ellefson, his now-absurd grudge against Metallica, Completely shunning other bands due to RELIGION).... and sadly it's going to turn people off the same way Phipps is turning people off by blasting Megadeth.....It all comes down to rock star childishness.
45. writes:
dave is a cool guy but i think he should read his bible and learn to love one another as jesus loved us otherwise i dont think he should be saying that he loves th lord, he should try and make a comprimise with phipps
do the right thing dave and make me proud
UP THE IRONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mustaines influence on metal is priceless. I wouldnt change anything about his contribution to music.......But Mustaine as a person is absolutely batty.
Yes, darkstar5163. I read your post in it's entirety. I think everyone who posted after you gave it a good looking over...... It sounds like the rantings of someone who has no earthly idea about what their talking about....Not only is it almost entirely based in opinion, there are so many shortcuts and misspelled words that it had no impact on me whatsoever......Six year olds have swayed my opinion more effectively than you.
Mustaine is a gaping a$$hole. Try and defend him! He's been half crazed for the better part of 7 years now based on what I've seen for myself, read and heard. Phipps is a jerk for pointing it out but most everyone knew it anyway.

Yeah, I agree.. Dave is a total childish baby. But I like Megadeth, and Unearth too. Just play some fuking metalcore and shut da hell up..

post 62/63 is just an old cranky bastard who is probably growing obese sends two thirds of his paycheck to his meth addicted ex-wife for child support and spends his time cranking up the music that was all the rage when he had big hair, friends and had an honest shot at a future.
Now balding, and rotting on the couch and deciding between Burgerking or Jack In The Box he finds his fun randomly attacking people who happen to disagree with him by resorting to muli-posting under differnt names and name calling rather than saying something observant, thoughtful, accurate or clever.

Girl pants???, Oh no!!!!! now you've said it all, i'm offended. I bet if you look at pictures of Mustaine back in the mid 80's he is probably wearing skin tight jeans with big white high top sneakers and supporting one fuccking bad hair cut.
Mustaine is the biggest whiner in metal today!!!!!!

lets put the 2 bands in one show together and see who is the bigger joke. i saw megadeth on the gigantour a few weeks back. amazing show. glen drover the guitarist who replaced marty freedman is an awesome guitarist. and besides this isnt a reunion of megadeth anyways. megadeth always was and will be dave mustains work. anyone else in the band is a hired musician that mustain wants in the band.
