Machine Head debut the studio version of their new track “Bastards“. Take it in below ahead of the January 26th release of the band’s new effort “Catharsis“. As previously reported, frontman/guitarist Robb Flynn wrote the song after a conversation with his sons following Donald Trump winning the U.S. presidential election.

Well, it's not Machine Head. It is, however, probably the most honest song Robb Flynn's ever written. And that has a certain endearing quality to it, too. This isn't the kind of song that is going to be well received by MH fans, it's the kind of song an artist writes for themselves, because they feel the need to express themselves.

Psythe, I just can't get into it. I'm all for musicians growing, pushing boundaries and expressing themselves, but this just comes across as lazy. I'm not sure what you meant by honest. It was pointed, but I would offer "Days Turn Blue to Gray" as a more honest and visceral song. On that same album 15 years ago, he did better with the 'stand up and fight' message in "Wipe the Tears".
This song is just sloppy. The vocal delivery sounds like he downed a couple 40oz. malt liquors before stepping into the vocal booth. The Hammond organ is basic and nearly a rip off of Freebird in tone and chord progression.
The drums are not the tight and intricate performance McClain brought to the plate in every previous release.
The guitars are no better and without any of the trademark twin axe harmonies.
I would accept this song as a bonus track or B-side. However as an album track, it isn't one that pushes the band forward. As heartfelt as it may be to Robb, this will be forever associated with the current political times and won't age well. He's expressed himself better and can do better than this.
