Slipknot Bassist Misses Iowa & St Paul Shows

Slipknot bassist Paul Gray was forced to miss the band's latest central Iowa homecoming Saturday night (April 23) at Hilton Coliseum in Ames after being hospitalized for an unspecified reason, according to singer Corey Taylor's announcement from stage. Gray is reportedly due to make a speedy return to the tour, which performed in front of 5,053 maggots at the Iowa venue (the back of Hilton was curtained off to lend the show a more intimate feel).
"Thank you so much for making a dream come true for a bunch of guys from Iowa," was how Taylor said goodbye, according to the Des Moines Register. Then the band posed for a photo on stage with the arena of fans as their backdrop — holding up Gray's mask in the photo in his absence.

and by comparison to Lamb Of God they ARE!.... whether their a good band or not only a very few of their songs (Elite, Teething, Engine # 9, WGTB) come close....and most of their material is purposely more melodic and mellow.
Metal means one thing to the Sabbath and Priest crowd.....it means something differnt to the metallica and megadeth lot and it means something seperate to the korn and soad fans.....and so on.....sometimes those tastes overlap, often times the don't.

some may file slipknot under "moderately heavy" or "high energy"...as i do....i think thats fair......
Slipknot is just not: "heavy as all bloody hack em up take no prisoners no looking back hell"...that is reserved for more brutal and much less radio/commercially friendly bands.

Ears hurting has more to do with how good or bad a bands sound technician(s) is.......
i'm 25 and i can say the 2 'loudest' bands..........NOT THE MOST HEAVY.........read that last bit a couple times so we're clear on what i mean........
As i was saying, the 2 loudest have been "Ministry" and "Janes Addiction" and...i've been to 100's of shows...
Arenas, Theatres, Clubs and Basements and i still suffer from some hearing loss today from "Janes" and "Ministries" two shows.....Metallicas summer sanitarium 2000 a close 3rd.........Being indoors or outdoors also has a prety big impact on 'loud'.......
Now as far as "heavy" the question: Can "Slipknot" give "Pantera" a run for ther money as some have put it?......
well......
They both have aggrssive singers who scream, roar and bellow....the lyrical themes tend to center on violence, frustration, insanity and confrontation other dark topics as seen fit by each band....I think Phil Anselmo gets the most points for charisma and perhaps prose....Corey Taylor can turn a phrase, on all three albums, some lines really do shine.....But sometimes it's just silly...like 'Dualitys' opening line. "I push my fingers into my eyes".... That may make a little girl squirm, but it's just lacking....To Taylors credit, his best stuff has never been on the radio singles....But this one goes to Pantera.
Drums....lots of pounding, punishing, hammering and acrobatic drumming......In terms of skill, both bands have marvelous signature style drummers, they both just tackle differnt aspects of the metal drumming form and both happen to work for thier own bands formula....Joey can double kick faster though at least so far, but again you wouldnt know that if you only know Slipknot through their first record or the singles. I like Vinnie better, but bias aside, it's a toss up....
okay, heres where things veer in favor of Pantera.....the guitars....with two guitarists, neither of slipknots axe-men could ever quite match the sheer wow-factor of Dimebag....The riff to "Walk" alone cements dimes name in guitar riff history forever....then the solos....the god like, impossible, memorable solos....enough said.
The bassists for both these bands pretty much ride the root.....These guys hold down the low-end, and since their not Flea, Les Claypool or Ryan Martinie among a few lesser known marvels, theres not a whole lots of technique involved...Just play fast, play heavy, junp from this part of the neck to that and don't miss....standard stuff really....Sometimes you can hear rex more sometimes you can here paul more....depends on the song....this is a draw as well......
What Pantera lack is the atypical amospheric ominousness that Slipknot can implement....Granted, Dime could summon a malestrom of dread at will (Cemetary Gates anyone) but you knew it would be guitar...Slipknot have a varitable orchestra with their tablest and synth man......is it better????....yes and no.....This where taste comes in...i cant tell you....
Heres the thing.....Most metal fans like, love or respect Pantera.......Their in a class of their own......They reinvented (yes, the steel hehe i said it) the genre.....literally picking up where Metallica left off when they got old, fat ,drunk, sloppy, lazy and tired.......
Slipknot are kinda screwed.....The masks are a gimmick...that hurts them in the eyes of purists....They play a more high intensity version of nu-metal.....but once upon a time Slayer has too.....Slipknot have a thing for hooks, their songs got 'really' catchy on this new album. The lyrics are more angsty than p***ed. And the lyrics are a tiny bit more clumsy in general.
i could have saved u alot of reading just to tell u something u already knew, which is that in general....grooves, riffs, drums, themes, radio-unfriendliness, rhythms, time-changes, song length, vulgarity, musical tension, and even the live show itself......Pantera comes out ahead in MY opinion.
This doesnt mean slipknot isnt heavy......They are....but theres 1000's of "heaviER" bands out there.
This doesnt mean i think slipknot suck....I think some of their songs (Disasterpiece, Eyeless, Heretic Anthem, People=sh**, Three Nil, and Sic) are explosive good quality stuff....
But in the staring contest of metal slipknot blink first by a second or two.

Pantera is way better.
They used to be a really great live act, they were until the very end, but you could tell they were declining because Phil was doping and drinking, it was effecting his vocal abilities, however, the music stayed the same. Dime, Vinnie, and Rex played their hearts out.
Oh yeah, I kept hearing late last year that Vol. 3 was Slipknot's last album, never took it into consideration because I don't usually trust a rumor mill like the one I heard it from, but who knows?

I dont pretend to think that Slipknot are the best at what they do, far from it.......And Slipknot is accessible by Metal standards....But that doesnt deminish the fact that there are some high energy songs in their 3 albums.
Theres also some weak willed non-metal tracks....which are not my cup of tea.
I myself have been to see both Nasum and Anal c*** among many others...Be in a pit like that and we can discuss mans capacity for violence.....
Mattter of fact I challenge you to give me one mosh pit more 'real' than that...I have an internal knee injury from that show that I'm reminded if every time i climb a few stairs.

You can dog the silly self proclaimed maggot crowd all you like and I would more or less encourage it. The raving 'knot' fans are as damaged and unthinking as some of the korn kids. Their not moving beyond slipknot, I just considered them a good stepping stone to get to the heavier more intense material of band like DEP, Pig Destroyer, Converge, Opeth etc....bands that really hit home for me.
