I have tons of respect for these guys, fore they are all masters of the art of progressive rock by way of classical musicianship and metal...Their to be applauded, but theres something a little too "70's-80's" about them that I still (after all these years) cant get past.....It's probably more my fault than theirs for being narrow minded, it's just a taste I could never acquire (many attempts) despite their obvious skill......

dream theater has no soul and no feeling in anything they've ever done. They're technical to be technical. they have no artistic talent at all. If u want to see really impressive musianship then look at pat methany who blows away anything dream theater has ever done and if u went to see a band that doesn't put as much technical stuff in to just be technical but also has soul look at tool. dream theater are very good at playing their instruments but not by any means the best and they are horrible musicians.

hey none are you always this stupid or are you just extra f***en retated tonight, and f*** you, you are one of those stupid f***ers who like really gay punk bands or bands that don't have a singer talented enough to sing actual lyrics, every one of those members in that band are super talented and you just mad at them because the could kick any of you bands that you like a$$ in a battle of the bands compition, because of there virtuosity. and for you i have to explain that word to you because you probably to stupid to know what that is. being a virtuoso means that you are a A musician with masterly skill or ability, technique, or personal style. so f*** you a$$ hole because it's a proven fact that they are all virtuosos, and another thing home many awards has you bands won. I bet the have won sh** because they are sh**. the drummer of dream theater alone has won 20 drum awards, been on numerous drum magazines, has his own type of cymbals, and is in the drumming hall of fame. so again f*** you you have no proof that there bad musicians, so keep that sh** to you self and go listen to you stupid non talented screamer f***ing music. you f***ing idiot.

who says that music has to have emotion? just 'cause every nu metal band has to whine and b**** in every song doesn't mean every band has to. just 'cause some bands such as pantera can play awesome music and add emotion to it doesn't mean that every band has to. dream theater is a musicians band.

ct go back to school man.
That was the most horrible attempt at spelling in an angry rant I have ever seen...For someone who is such a fan of grandiose technique, you demonstrate very little skill in something as simple as posting......."retated" ?!?!?...I assume you mean retarded...and "and you just mad"....I'm leaving out alot of other mistakes to boot....
.....Dream Theatre would be ashamed to know a fan of theirs was doing such a half assed job at defending them....I have nothing against this band, in my opinion it's really hard to find a band that is this skilled and talented, I just don't love them either.....Respect other opinions, learn to spell, and make an articulate statement before you make a fool of yourself again.
I also am going to have to stand behind none and trippedoubts statements as well. As a bassist for years and drummer for giggles, I can relate to his short but excellent statement.
And Blackdogs right, Queensryche strikes a more "emotional" chord for me while still preserving that sheer obvious playing ability.

hey ct you need to learn to read i listed some of the bands i lie and i'll do it again. tool and pat methany do u know who they are and no i don't like nu metal and i don't think nu metal has real emtion i think things like damien rice have real emotion. Also i said they were good at playing their instruments u retard. they have an excellant drummer in mike portnoy and john petrucci is very good they just can't write with any emotion and i get tired of seeing them idolized when i don't see the emotion in pat methany but none of them can write or play like him and for your battle of the bands comment the only person i really mentioned was pat methany and at their last show they played a 68 minute song with every one playing an array of differant instruments. Just try to pay attention

Emotion is a feeling, you can't write or sing emotion, it is just felt by the listener. A person can get emotive with DT's songs as well as Britney Spears or Pantera.
Every DT song has a meaning to me and makes me think of things that touch my heart, that's why i see emotion in them...
Lack of Emotions for me is a band which you can't hear half of the instruments and spend 1 hour of concert hitting a bottle with a baseboll stick...

Being 12 and into Dream Theater isn't unusual. I was into Cannibal Corpse at that age, along with the likes of Queensryche and Pantera.
Oh yeah, he's probably pulling your leg anyway. Who really gets the sense of the words at age 12?
My nephew might, but at least for his sake I'm training him onto metal SLOWLY!

Thats hilarious, I was just cold and ruthless to a 12 year old....serves me right.
My week is set.....
Im going to go buy a puppy just so i can drop it from my balcony....Buy a gun and shoot a caged deer.....Then dismember and skeletonize a "fresh out of the mommy" kitten......
Jesus....
Alright...if infact you are 12 ct, I for the first and likely last time, apologize. If your even 1 year older than 12 then that just makes you an idiot who lacks anything better to say to cover up for their utter lack of creative input.....Damn i'm still being harsh.......if u listen to metal then im sure my rant bounced off of u anyway....and if your into Dream Theatre at 12 then your alot smarter than all those kids into Eminem, 50 cent and Good Charlotte......

Hey none? If youre gonna hoot and holler about one of your idols, at least spell his f***ing name right. That makes me think you arent really into him as much as you say you are. Its Pat Metheny, not Methany. By the way Dream Theater > your stupid, simple minded, cant understand anything more complex than Tool, ass. Thank you

Anyone who's argued here needs to shut up. The members of Dream Theater can obviously play their instruments, and no one can argue with that. I know people who dislike Dream Theater because they are too technical or showoffy. I can see that. Listen to A Change of Seasons. Theres this one breakdown section before it goes into a real chugging riff after stopping again that I feel could have been left out (I know I'm not being specific here- I apologize for that.) While the riffs are cool, I feel the transition was rather mediocre and that the piece wouldn't have been worse if they'd left that part out.
Some people are put off by Dream Theater because of the abundance of odd time signatures and the insaneness the keyboard sounds. There is nothing wrong with that. I have been listening to Dream Theater for about a month or so now, but I will not attack nor blindly defend them. They are brilliant musicians. It can be quite hard to make what they do sound good, songwriting wise, especially drifting off into the atonal stuff. Slayer can write amazing atonal harmonies. Elton John can write beautiful ballads. Dream Theater can do both. They all know how to play their instruments, and no one can't say that, but that's not what I'm focusing on. I'm focusing on the talent it takes to make what they do sound as good as it does.
Lyrically, they are not a very deep band, and I will admit that that is probably their weakest spot. But I daresay none of you listen to DT for the lyrical fulfillment.

My take on Dream Theater:
1) 4/5 of their musicians (ie everyone but LaBrie) can (and frequently do) make it into lists of the top 10 in their chosen instrument and they're not out of place there.
2) IMO their lyrics are as deep as any other bands - and often very personal. Take the album Train of Thought as an example - the first song is a message to recording companies, the second is part 2 of a song about a band members past alcoholism, the third is about Petrucci's marriage finding it hard while he's touring, the 4th is about Portnoy's step father. Thats pretty deep and personal stuff which is full of emotion for the band at least, and in my view that translates into their performances.
3) They play progressive metal - its not supposed to be everyones cup of tea - its technical, fast, and complex music that can be pretty hard to get into if thats not your scene.
One thing that is beyond doubt is that DT are a band full of VERY talented musicians. If you don't like their style then don't listen to them, but don't let your personal preferences get in the way of rational thinking either.

There are three bands that to me keeps the world turning - Opeth, In Flames and Dream Theater.
I found DT hard to get into because they are just so different from anything else out there. I was lucky that a very talented muscian put me onto them and he sort of walked me through their music and to a point helped me appreciate what these guys were doing. Their sheer skill still impresses the f*** out me today.
Who or what the f*** is lord belial!?!?!?

None commented earlier on Pat Metheny. While he was a little harsh on Dream Theater having no soul, I agree with him a little bit. But he is right; Pat Metheny is the single greatest musician ever. He's an AMAZING guitar player with 16 Grammies in 9 different categories, all the while performing about 300 gigs per year for 30 years straight. He has the deepest understanding of music--including harmony, melody, history, and feel--of almost anyone, and each album denies category.
Check out his latest album 'The Way Up' by the Pat Metheny Group if you want to see what I mean. It's a single 68-minute composition that combines jazz, classical, rock, latin, and new-age.

all this talk about no emotion in dream theaters music is gettin to me. sensing emotion in music is a personal connection with music, and i for one see pleanty of emotion in there music. yeah, there's a lot of fancy wankery and craziness, but that itself can be just as emotional as other music. all you who keep taking stabs at dream theater for not being emotional, just remember, i probably think half the music you listen to is unemotional as well... chill out

49. writes:
i listen to tool as well as dream theater. they are different. as is pat metheny. its very difficult to say that one style of music is better than the other (although i do put down rap alot). people like different styles of music. yes?
(oh yeah, i think that dt can play any song that any other artist can play but other artist cant play many dt songs. they are one of the best bands technically and their lyrics are so deep. they are also so imaginative. How the f*** do they come up with half the sh** they play, tool too. and i'll include "pat metheny" just so i dont get anyone p***ed off)
anyone check out the Labrie album, Elements of Persuasion? its sick, really heavy sh**.

i downloaded some songs from the new album "octavarium" and i am not sure if this is "the" album,i really don't think this is a great album.. i heard a scratch in there... what is that?... when did dream theater use scratch in their songs... well, thats my opinion about it, i think dream theater its not the old dream theater that we are used to it.. but i hope that their next album be better..
