Tool Working On New Album

Band Photo: Tool (?)
While there hasn't been an official announcement from the band at this point, it would appear Tool is well into the process of recording a new album.
Adam Jones posted the photo below of the band together via his Instagram account with the caption "SmokeOnTheHorizon." This will be the band's first release since "10,000 Days" eight years ago.
Back in July, Jones had stated that work on the album was delayed for years due to a lawsuit that wasn't made public knowledge (read the full statement over here).
A brief post on the Tool website back in May also indicated writing for a new album was underway and actual recording was due to begin this year.
Further details and official announcements are forthcoming, so stay tuned.

Al least it's not taking them 10,000 days. (Sorry, I couldn't help myself.)
I love Tool and think each album is its own masterpiece. However, 6 albums in just shy of 25 years seems a bit light. I know the adage quality over quantity, but it just seems like there has been ample time to generate a higher quantity of quality. :)
Usually when artists are put in stressful situations, their output increases as they gel around a passionate purpose or against common obstacle. Here's to hoping the trials that have set the album back lead to a high quality product with a lot of energy - (maybe even a double album?).

I'm going to hold onto some hope for this.
"10K Days" wasn't a total bust but it couldn't even begin to approach the rest of their catalog. Needless to say, nostalgia tips the scales against any of Tool's future output for me (and countless other fans) but I know this band can create, refine, and distill excellence.
Here's to hoping I'm of sound and open mind when this thing eventually drops and that I don't set my expectations to high.

@ RM - Nicely done! while "Cognitive" was Tool laden (to say the least), you will hear Opeth creeping into the new Soen (Tellurian).
Regarding Tool, I agree with your thoughts on 10k days. Funny how it may have been much more highly praised if it weren't for their previous work. I'm curious how they'll follow it up. You know they're more than aware of how it was received, warranted or not.

I'm shocked Soen is getting so much love here. I picked up "Congitive" after hearing a lot of rave and praise for the Martin Lopez connection and Tool similarities. The sad part of that album is it's trying way to hard to be Tool... There is a major difference between wearing your influences on your sleeve and try to be another band.
Like everyone else, I'm beyond exited for new Tool. 10k Days was a great album; maybe not as great as their prior albums, but compare it too other metal releases.... Tool has never disappointed.

I'm also one of those who love Soen, but it's not about the Tool similarities. I like Lopez' style. It's different from Danny Carey's and is sorely lacking in the past three Opeth albums. I had missed hearing the way he plays and really enjoy what he's done with Soen. Also, Steve DiGiorgio was playing that way long before Justin Chancellor, so who is imitating who there? With their new bass player, I'm curious to hear how Tellurian sounds. Lastly, I think the mix courtesy of Mr. Bottrill is a significant unspoken factor in why Soen gets compared to Tool.

I haven't gotten around to "Tellurian" just yet (kind of out of the blue, I'm on a classical piano kick right now) but will look for streams/samples.
@PorcupineTreeFan
I have to admit, Soen's sonic proximity to Tool is a bit jarring at first. There are countless ugly Tool clones out there but I feel like Soen does it tastefully... even if the mimicry speaks of a lack of originality. There are notes of melodic Akerfeldt vocal-isms in there too, just to add insult to injury. Still, I couldn't help but enjoy about half of "Cognitive" on the first spin.

Google Tellurian full album and there is a site from the Netherlands that has the full album. I found it over the weekend after listening to a few ewetoobs of different songs. I feel Soen's latest album fully stands on its own without sounding like a clone. I'll likely need to order it, like I needed to for Cognitive.
... Oh wait. This was a Tool article. Ummm... so... yeah.
Glad Tool is getting close to releasing another progtastic opus for our ear anus's.

"Opiate" is wonderful. Taken as a whole, I like it better than "Undertow".
"AEnima" will always be my favorite though. Discovering that album was a musical milestone for me. It completely redefined "heavy" and "prog" for me at a time when I was seeking out both under the same banner.

Ænema is my favorite as well. I saw them for the first time in December of '96 and it was a near religious experience. I still can remember standing outside of the Brady Theater in Tulsa with no coat and a short sleeve shirt in 45º weather unfazed and in a daze replaying the concert in my head. Third Eye is one of the best set openers ever for any band.

NM EsotericSurgery, Every few years or so I take a metal hiatus but I (obviously) come back for more (news included) and this site remains a favorite haunt... 10 bloody years after stumbling upon it. Hope all is well with you and here's to hoping Tool can still make awe-inspiring music. :)

About time! I bought 10000 Days and the self-titled Pearl Jam album on the same day way back in 2006. While I thought the Tool album was far superior, I predicted that PJ would have released 3 albums by the time Tool released another one, I may still be proven right.
