To clarify my comment about the mix, I'd like to add that there are far too many bands today who are going for that absolutely pristine studio mix sound for their albums, and that's fine, but anyone who actually writes or performs music knows it's not always that clean.
Taking the mix in the direction that they did gives them a slightly unique signature to their sound. It's a bit more... tribal or something. They've done well with the mid-range. I expect a lot of the people complaining have their systems EQ-ed with the mids scooped out and yeah; that would probably make this song's sound like crap.

I honestly don't understand what it is that the general audience expected from Sliknot. Most say they what them to go back to styles of old, is this not it? Most say they should go back to their heavy roots, not satisfying enough?
The grass is always greener on the other side I guess
Yeah, there are going to be the 'MAGGOTS4LIFE' and also the 'f***THEKNOTCLAN'. Theres also gonna be indifferent people. Yep...theres gonna be people like me who take the time to differentiate the types of people... Point is.... Im interested in hearing how people would have Slipknot sound to satisfy their lust for perfection.
To me, Ive wanted Slipknot to go back to this type of sound. They have. Im not really sure how different people expected this to be. Lower your expectations? Nah... that'd be too easy.
I like this song. It sounds like the 'Gateway' band I got into and I realise there is not need to be and elitist prick about their sound.

To all those talking about the mix, it's a rough mix, one made to give the listeners something to hear.
I remember when The Heretic Anthem was released before IOWA. It was a rough mix, just like this is.
The final mix, well, I guess we'll hear it when the album is released.

Overall, I like it and look forward to hearing more. I'm a little concerned about how the drumming turns out, but it does indeed seem like a rough mix - not to mention just one of many yet-unheard songs - so full judgment is impossible at this point.
It's Slipknot. It echoes the sound that established them, with some natural maturity to boot. I'm not the same person I was in 1999, and neither are the band members the same. Taking stock of such facts and reaching measured conclusions accordingly seems to be a lost art among Maggots and Haters alike.

Sounds a bit demo-like to me too, post 16 is probably right.
I credit Slipknot with bringing me back to metal when I was checking out a lot of alternative and experimental stuff, so I have a bit of a soft spot for them. The lyrics are unfortunate and the turntables are better left as an accent rather than a dominate force but to be honest it's better than I would have expected sans Jordison and Gray.

I think we can all say that this sound, while nostalgic, does not age well whatsoever. Nu metal as a subgenre had a short life span. It will forever be etched in the early to mid 2000's, and there is absolutely nothing bands/labels can do to reverse that. Its best if bands just leave that alone. Like, it's not a terrible track by any means. However, it does not compel me to want to hear more from this band. Most of the supposed "maggots" or fans of that age have matured into their mid 20's. The brand and image this band is associated with parallels disenfranchised teens (I mean that is without a doubt their marketing demographic as well). I would definitely feel out of place if I were to dress like a maggot at age 24. With all due respect SLipknot, you fueled a seething ire back in my days of yore, but I must say, I do not care to revisit this sound again. I've fully evolved in my musical taste. It's weird. Back in the day, I would literally do anything to get my hands on the newest slipknot album. I frickin pre-ordered both vol.3 and all hope is gone as soon as their merch site was up.
Ok, I lied, the only song I will occasionally go back and listen to is the heretic anthem on Iowa. Actually, Iowa was their angriest album.
Also stonesour sucks, just sayin!

at least it wasn't ruined by poppy pop rock singing, this sounds about 8 years too late
