The band was formed in 1985, just over four kilometres from Tel Aviv, originally under the name, Axe Metal and became one of the first groups outside of Europe to perform the extreme brand of music which would become known as black metal. They built up a fan base at the Penguin Club, where numerous other alternative Israeli artists made their name and where they recorded a live demo, "Destruction Till Death," which was preceded in 1986 by a self-titled rehearsal demo. Israeli death metallers SALEM are currently in the recording studio working on the follow-up to 2005's "Strings Attached". The new release, which will be a double album, will include a 27-minute piece entitled "Once Upon a Lifetime Parts I - V". Part 1 of the track is available for listening at the band's official MySpace profile. Part 2 will follow shortly.
SALEM's latest album, "Strings Attached", was released in Israel in June 2005. The CD contains songs from the band's past repertoire and one brand new song, all re-arranged and performed with one of the most respected all-girl string quartets in Israel. Also featured on the CD are a remake of the SALEM classic "Old Wounds", featuring guest appearances by the lead vocalists of ETERNAL GRAY, ARALLU, BARTHOLOMEUS NIGHT, MOONSKIN, LEHAVOTH, MATRICIDE, SPAWN OF EVIL, SOLITARY and HANGMAN.
Swedish heavy metal band Dismember will perform in Israel on August 29 at the Barby Club in Tel Aviv. Israeli metal bands Eternal Gray and God Below will open for the headlining band.
Another group of musicians slated to arrive in Israel soon is O’Malley/Ambarchi/Csihar, which will perform here in September. Attila Csihar, soloist for Mayhem who performed in Israel with the band Salem, will be joined by Steven O’Malley of Sunn O))) and Oren Ambarchi, a Habad member and son to a Jewish Iraqi family who emigrated to Australia. The three artists are signed with the Southern Lord record label.
The Israel show will be the trio’s first time sharing the same stage. During their stay, in addition to their joint show, they will perform solo concerts as well as joint shows with Israeli musicians. On July 20 and 22, the band will play at Levontin in Tel Aviv, and of July 24 they will play at the Yellow Submarine in Jerusalem.

SALEM's appearance at the Theater Club comes after a 16-month absence from the stage, during which time the band recorded and released the "Strings Attached" CD, which combines between SALEM songs and dark classical music.
Tickets for the concert are available online through Metalist magazine's web site.
MAYHEM have set "Ordo Ab Chao" as the title of their new album, tentatively due in early 2006 via Season of Mist. The band's upcoming CD will mark their first release with vocalist Csihar since their 1993 album, "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". Csihar joined MAYHEM in November 2004 as the replacement for departed singer Maniac (real name Sven Erik Kristiansen).
According to a posting on Israeli black metallers SALEM's website, ETERNAL GRAY singer Oren Balbus has contributed his vocals for the remake of the classic 'Old Wounds'. Balbus joins lead vocalists from ARALLU, BARTHOLOMEUS NIGHT, MOONSKIN, LEHAVOTH, MATRICIDE, SPAWN OF EVIL, SOLITARY and HANGMAN on the track. 'Old Wounds' will be included on Salem's upcoming album, Strings Attached, due out in North America in April via The End, and worldwide through Raven Music.
