Therapy? Go Unplugged And Unleashed
Back in the nineties, the word "alternative" was thrown around like a jobber in the ring with The Undertaker. Over time, the bands who were being tagged with this label began to sound like each other, though some groups proved they were worthy of such a title, sounding like no one else and being difficult to pinpoint. If ever there was a band who fit that description, it would be Northern Ireland's own, Therapy? Achieving underground and then mainstream success with such albums as "Nurse," "Troublegum" and "Infernal Love" and are still going strong today. "How strong" you ask? Well, how many bands can tear the roof off the place at an acoustic show?
The show took place at Nells Jazz and Blues Club in Kensington, London, a charming club which was able to host one of the best atmospheres one could have at a Friday evening gig, letting the sunlight in through the surrounding windows, while candlelit tables welcomed rockers of all ages and tastes to the show, anchored by friendly and talkative staff. There was no support tonight, Therapy? would take to the stage with their instruments and that would be that. They received a hero's welcome as they did so and opened the set with the memorable, "Living In The Shadow Of A Terrible Thing" from their superb 2012 album, "A Brief Crack of Light." More...

Sunday Old School 200: Monsters Of Rock
This week’s edition of Sunday Old School is a very special one because today sees Sunday Old School reach two hundred official articles! So to celebrate this little milestone of ours, I wanted to look back in rock and metal history and find a true landmark moment in the genre. A moment that let the world know that heavy music was here to stay and meant so much to so many. And nothing seemed like a bigger moment in general metal history than when promoter Paul Loasby teamed up with Maurice Jones and formed a festival, which was to be held at Donington Park in Leicestershire, England, and would be known as Monsters of Rock.
The one day event was initially scheduled to be a grand final date for Rainbow’s UK tour, a band whom Loasby had recently been promoting. Rainbow were joined at the inaugural event by established German rockers, the Scorpions, who had just released their seventh album, "Animal Magnetism" and Judas Priest, who were riding high thanks to the wildly successful, "British Steel" album. Also on the bill that day were heavy metal upstarts, Saxon, who were considered the leaders of the exciting young, New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement at the time, Canadian hard rock veterans, April Wine and New York openers Riot and Touch. The festival was a resounding success, drawing in thirty five thousand fans and a live compilation album, which sold well.
Although it was initially conceived only as a vehicle for Rainbow, it was announced on the day of the first edition that the festival would return the next year. AC/DC were to be the headliners in 1981, marking the first of their record holding three headline appearances at the event. It was a somewhat lighter tone in the sophomore year, where AC/DC were joined Whitesnake, American stars, Blue Oyster Cult and quite interestingly, British glam rock veterans, Slade, who had recently found favour with the heavy metal audience after a brief time out of the limelight. Rounding off the bill was Blackfoot, a Southern Rock band from Jacksonville, Florida and More, who were notable for featuring former Iron Maiden vocalist, Paul Day, as well as a DJ set from the BBC’s voice of rock, Tommy Vance. The varied lineups continued, with Status Quo (AKA, your nan’s favourite band) headlining the event in 1982, where they were joined by other established rockers such as Gillan, Uriah Heep and Hawkwind, as well as a young Canadian group named, Anvil and Monsters of Rock veterans, Saxon, who became the first band to appear twice, before Whitesnake closed the event in 1983, which also featured Meat Loaf and ZZ Top, who were placed higher than such heavy metal favourites as Dio, Diamond Head and Twisted Sister. Pit Stories: Balls Out Bawling
Every week we talk to bands from all over the world and hear some of their favourite stories from the mosh pit.
This week, Therapy? frontman Andy Cairns dishes some dirt on two of the most common things to be seen at a Therapy? show, nudity and crying, two things which really don't go together.
I've seen quite a lot of nudity in my time. Once in Oxford a friend of ours, Diamond Dave, ended up coming over the barrier wearing nothing but a sawn off Coke can taped to his genitals, how he didn't castrate himself Idon't know.
We also get a lot of screaming and crying. We had a hit in Europe with a cover of Husker Du's 'Diane' and for a while lots of gigs would have lots of inflatable dolls flying through the air with the crowd surfers, quite a sight. Yep, nudity and sexual deviance seem to feature heavily among some of the more enthusiastic members of our fans.
We recently spoke to Andy Cairns about the new Therapy? album, "A Brief Crack of Light," touring and why he feels the band have always been outsiders. "A Brief Crack Of Light" will be released on September 11th in North America and is available now in Europe. Be sure to come back next tuesday for more Pit Stories!

Sunday Old School: Therapy?
So far this year in Sunday Old School, we’ve covered bands from a variety of places including Switzerland, Australia, Norway and Japan, as well as the expected English and American groups, but we have yet to look at a band from the Emerald Isle. This week we’ll be rectifying this by taking a gander at the Northern Irish alternative metal/rock band, Therapy? The seeds of the band were sewn in 1989 when guitarist Andy Cairns spotted drummer Fyfe Ewing performing in a punk rock band at a local charity gig. The two began talking after the show and soon recorded a demo tape, with Cairns also handling the bass duties, having borrowed the instrument from Michael McKeegan, a classmate of Ewing’s who was officially recruited into the band when they decided to begin performing live. After releasing their first single, "Meat Abstract" in July of 1990, Therapy? soon attracted the attention of legendary British disc jockey, John Peel and took slots supporting a variety of bands, including Madchester outfit Inspiral Carpets and Ian Mackeye’s post-Minor Threat band, Fugazi amongst others. After these accomplishments, they signed with independent record label, Wiiija, through which they released their first two albums, "Babyteeth" and "Pleasure Death."
The two albums were enough to secure the group a new record deal with major label, A&M and soon afterwards, the band found their first taste of commercial success when they released, "Nurse" in November 1992, which was able to reach the Top 40 in the U.K. Album Charts, thanks largely to the single, "Teethgrinder," which entered the Top 40 in the Singles Charts. They then scored a string of successful EPs including, "Shortsharpshock," which featured the song, "Screamager," perhaps the best known Therapy? song and one which incorporated the feelings of teenage emotions as brilliantly as their fellow Northern Irishmen, The Undertones had done fifteen years prior with, "Teenage Kicks," albeit in a much darker fashion. Following two more successful EPs in "Face The Strange" and "Opal Mantra," the group released, "Troublegum," their biggest album to date, in February 1994. "Troublegum" featured no less than six singles including the Joy Division cover, "Isolation," which had two different videos made to promote it. The popularity of the record led the band to a Kerrang! Award and a Mercury Prize nomination. More...

Therapy? Comments On The Passing Of Gary Moore
Irish hard rock act Therapy? has posted the following statement online in response to the passing of Gary Moore:
"Just heard the very sad news that Gary Moore has passed away. The Belfast-born guitar legend was a big inspiration for myself growing up in Northern Ireland, both for his work with Thin Lizzy and his very successful solo career.
"We had the pleasure of meeting Gary and his band last summer at the Pinkpop Classic festival in Holland. After watching their (killer) show, we were introduced and Gary came over to our dressing room and chatted away to us. He was everything you'd want a hero to be… laid back, modest and very genuine, with a cool sense of humour.
"Our condolences go out to his family, friends and bandmates."
