Doc Coyle Comments On Aging In The Metal Scene

Guitarist Doc Coyle of God Forbid has posted a new editorial through Metal Sucks about aging in the heavy metal scene. An excerpt from his comments follows:

"In the last few years, something seemed to happen and I barely noticed. Suddenly, I’m no longer the young kid at the show. I’m one of the guys hiding out by the bar. I’m not crowd surfing, not covered in sweat with my shirt off, and I’m certainly not moshing. I’m also not randomly yelling 'Slayer!', but that seems to span all demographics. I became… (gulp)… an adult. I don’t know what the range is in the ages of the followers of MetalSucks, but I’ll assume that it’s a mix of younger and older metal fans. I am 29 years old, but I still feel relatively young and energetic considering my opening salvo. I’m the youngest member of my band, and younger than a good majority of my friends in bands and the industry.

"With that said, I think there comes a time for all metal heads, and probably all adults for that matter, when you look at what is popular amongst the true youth culture (16-24), and you feel as if not only do you not relate to it, but it feels alien, as if it’s creation was not meant for your consumption (which it wasn’t) – and it also seems inferior to music that you grew up with. I’m only 29, and I’m already having 'back in my day' moments. It kind of scared me, and I began to wonder if I was being obtuse and a little too set in my ways, or if my analysis was accurate. God Forbid Issues Band Update

Guitarist Doc Coyle of God Forbid has issued the following update about the band's recent activity:

"It's been quite some time since I've given some type of update on what the GF crew has been up to, and thought it would be appropriate to awaken from information hibernation. We been home from tour for about 2 weeks, and have had ample time to decompress.

"So to catch up, I have to take you back a few months. It was early January 2010, and we had just played our first show in months, a one-off local gig, and were resuming writing new material after the holidays when we received an offer to do a tour with Five Finger Death Punch and Shadows Fall to replace Throwdown who had dropped off. This was only a week before the tour started, but we decided to throw caution to wind and jump on the tour. It was definitely worth it. I'd say 90% of the shows were sold out, and in many cases were playing rooms too small for the tour. Kudos to FFDP for going to bat for us, and bringing us out. It was definitely a very different tour for us. Probably the most mainstream thing we've done except for maybe Ozzfest, but we actually went over extremely well. It was nice to get out to a totally different audience, even if many people didn't know we were playing because we were added last minute. It was also great to hang with our old friends in Shadows Fall, and get to know and party with our new friends in 2 Cents. More...

God Forbid Announces Upcoming Tour Dates

God Forbid has issued the following statement about their upcoming tour dates:

"This is quite a surprise to announce God Forbid's participation in the Five Finger Death Punch, Shadows Fall, 2 Cents tour. This was a tour we were looking at when it was first being put together, so the fact that we eventually landed it, even though it was a last minute thing, is a stroke of good fortune. We do wish our friends in Throwdown well, and hope whatever happened turns out ok in the end. Big thanks to FFDP for bringing us out! We have become good friends with them over the last couple years, and the fact that they are making this huge gesture is awesome. We go all the way back with our brothers in Shadows Fall to our first tour in 2000, so this will be another trip around the rodeo with some old friends. We've never toured with 2 Cents, but know Adair from Manttis and the other guys seem super cool. Unfortunately, we will have cancel our Jan 29th performance with Life of Agony in Long Island. Combined with the spring tour with Lamb of God and the summer Mayhem Festival, this will be the most successful US touring cycle GF has ever had, so it's a big reason to be positive in 2010!

"In other news, God Forbid will be heading out with our friends in Kittie for a few weeks in March mainly focusing on the northeast. One of the sickest new bands around, Periphery, will open the first part of the tour, and Gwen Stacy will open the 2nd part. This will more than likely be the last tour before getting back to working on a new album. appy new year to everyone, and we'll see you on tour! Tour dates are below."

God Forbid Reveals New Guitar Player

New Jersey based metalcore outfit God Forbid has revealed that they have recruited a new guitar player in the shape of former Himsa guitarist Matt Wicklund. An excerpt from guitarist/vocalist Doc Coyle's blog reads as follows:

"This past fall and winter has been a refocusing period on a personal and business level for God Forbid figuring what the next phase of this band will be. Another announcement is that Matt Wicklund (WARREL DANE, ex-HIMSA,) is our new guitar player. He relocated to New Jersey and immediately started contributing new material. Along with being a great guy, he fit in with all of us really well, and it seemed like a no brainer. It's hard to say what the new material will be like, but so far I can say it's going to be very hook oriented, and obviously without Dallas, it will have a different vibe. Matt and I have very similar musical tastes, but he comes from a more trained background in theory which should create an interesting dynamic. He is also a very good lead guitar player, so there will probably be more solos. As soon as we do a new photo shoot, we will update all of our websites with Matt. We'll see you on tour!"

God Forbid Comments On James Sullivan's Death

Guitarist Doc Coyle of New Jersey metallers God Forbid has issued the following statement about Avenged Sevenfold drummer James Sullivan, who passed away on December 28th:

"RIP Rev (A7X) I just wanted to send our deepest condolences on behalf of God Forbid to Avenged Sevenfold and Jimmy's family and close friends after news of his passing. God Forbid got to know Jimmy and the rest of the band when we took A7X out on tour in 2002 when they were a brand new band, and they've continued to treat us with warmth and respect over the years since their meteoric rise. This is a a true tragedy, and he will be missed greatly. Love and Respect."

Doc Coyle Releases Statement About Beer Incident

GOD FORBID guitarist DOC COYLE, who was filling in for LAMB OF GOD guitarist Mark Morton on their opening trek with METALLICA, has issues an official statement through MetalSucks.net regarding the much-publicized incident in which a fan threw a cup of liquid at his face during a performance.

“I’m sure many of you have seen the video of me getting pegged on stage while I was on Metallica tour filling in for Mark from Lamb of God. Although 95% of the comments were really supportive, I just wanted to clarify a few things about the incident. First off, it was a beer, not a water. A big ol’ tall boy plastic cup of beer, and whoever threw it must have been a quarterback because it was full and hit me square in the eye at full steam. It felt like I got sucker punched. I had a mark by my cheek bone and it was swollen all night. I surprised I didn’t have a black eye. The way it hit me is probably the reason why I reacted the way I did. I’m no tough guy, but I wasn’t really thinking. I just reacted. I really don’t know what I would’ve done if anyone would’ve have owned up to to throwing it, but I have no clue if I would’ve hit the person. I can say that I’m not violent at all, and don’t think violence is a productive way to solve problems. I’m glad nothing came of it, but obviously the person was pretty cowardly to throw it and not own up to it. Anyway, shit happens. I just think it’s kind of funny how it spread on the internet. Beer in the face and all, it was still more than an honor to play with Lamb of God and open for Metallica.”

You can check out the action at the 4:22 mark in the video below:

"Doc here just checking in to give everyone a heads up on the GF camp. We just returned from our most successful European tour to date doing a bunch of insane festivals with some of the biggest bands in the world as well as some off-dates with ANTHRAX, DEVILDRIVER, and DOWN which also kicked ass! Big thanks to our European supporters and all the bands we jammed and partied with. On to current events, we hop on a plane tonight to start the Rockstar Mayhem Tour which could possibly be the sickest tour of our lives. We've been on the road since the day Earthsblood dropped, and we're firing on all cylinders right now! Prepare to have your face ripped off if you make it to any of these shows. We play at 3:30pm on the Jager Stage everyday right before All That Remains. Be there or be fucked! We'll also be doing signings/meet & greets for Jagermeister, Rockstar shortly after our set, so don't be shy.

I also have a few other announcements. We a new fill-in guitar player. Matt Wicklund, formerly of HIMSA and a contributer to the WARREL DANE solo record, is handling second guitar duties in the meantime, and we're having a great time with him. Say hi to him on tour. He's the pretty boy with the hat. The second bit of news is that I will be playing bass, filling in for Paulo from TRIVIUM, on the first Mayhem date in Sacramento. He's getting his wisdom teeth done. Wish him well. The last piece of news is that our song 'Empire of the Gun' from Earthsblood will be featured on a Mayhem Tour Download Pack on Rock Band. Other bands featured on the pack are MARILYN MANSON, CANNIBAL CORPSE, and more.

See you all on the road. Check out these off-dates we'll doing on the Mayhem run:

God Forbid Posts "War Of Attrition" Video Online

New Jersey based metal act God Forbid has posted their new music video online for the song, "War Of Attrition." You can check it out below. The song comes from the bands latest studio album, "Earthsblood" which in stores now.

Guitarist Doc Coyle states: “Shooting videos kinda sucks. Especially performance videos. You have to head bang for 10 hours in a row, fake play your songs, and you don't even know if all the work will pay off with an awesome video. With that said, this is by far the best performance video we've ever had and it really captures the intensity of the song. As you can see from the clip, we really put our trust in Ian who was incredible to work with. Ian and his crew were super professional. I can't wait for everyone to see the finished product. And like Dave Chappelle says, ‘Everything looks better in slow motion.’ See you all this summer.” More...
