The thrash metal sound of Slayer was formed in Huntington Beach, CA in 1982. Comprising Tom Araya (bass, vocals), Kerry King (guitar), Jeff Hanneman (guitar) and Dave Lombardo (drums), they made their debut in 1983, with a track on the compilation Metal Massacre III. After that the rest has been history. The band played at breakneck speed with amazing technical precision, but the intricacies of detail were lost in a muddy production. Araya's lyrics dealt with death, carnage, Satanism and torture, but were reduced to an indecipherable guttural howl. But this chaos called music is what set the ways for Slayer and many bands to follow.

Through the years, Slayer has been hit with much controversy over their lyrics, including lawsuits. But through the years Slayer has managed to build a following from coast to coast. Slayer has played such tours as Monsters of Rock, Ozzfest, and recently toured the U.S. co-headling with Pantera.

Now almost 20 years later, Slayer is still playing just as hard as ever. Will Slayer ever stop? Not likely, considering they are keeping up with thrash bands half their age, after all they did start it!

Megadeth Comments On "Big Four" Tour

Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine has issued the following statement about the possibility of an upcoming "big four" tour with Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax:

"Droogies!

"There has been a lot of talk about the possibility of a Big Four Tour and while I find the timing peculiar, the opportunity is a once in a lifetime opportunity, because we all are really so very different now, and the chances of this happening are probably not going to come around again in the future; due to personal plans, new ventures, and the inevitable passing of torches to the next generation in each of our respective genres (or the sub-genres that were created).

"While there is nothing to say at this point, if it happens, when it happens we, as well as my other three fellow horsemen, will let you know. When we played Loud Park, our dressing room become the den of iniquity for all the marquis talent for the night. Although some of the other bands tried to come in, (Blessed By A Broken Heart - who's blonde band member came close to getting his ass handed to him for racist comments to and about my tech, Willie Gee - I am glad I didn't hear or I would have another story about bodily harm).

"Our crew and the Japanese crew were keeping it just to our friends and the top acts. In fact, at one time we had me and Kerry King talking, Dave Lombardo holding court with several people, Akira Takahashi was hanging with Shawn, Glen Tipton from JP, the guys from Anvil, and lots of journos, photogs, and record company people all in my dressing room.

"Funny, it seems like Blabbermouth and Roadrunner USA are the only people who don't like me or Megs anymore. Such a shame. More...

Double Dragon Comments On Slayer, Megadeth Tour

Australia’s Double Dragon have recently completed their supporting tour with Slayer and Megadeth. The band supported the metal titans in all states of Australia.

Vocalist Lee Gardiner comments: “Wow, what a crazy week, supporting 50% of the big four of Thrash metal was a dream come true to say the least. From the first show in Brisbane, to the final show in Perth on Tuesday, we had a glimpse of the machines that are Megadeth and Slayer, and what machines they are! Playing before Megadeth and Slayer was a task in its self, I know myself that if I had bought tickets I would be excited enough to unleash hell on the unsuspecting support bands, but we had fantastic reactions and support from the crowds in every city, and I would really like to thank the Australian metal public for showing their respects and heading down to the fence to bang out for us.

“The whole tour was filled with so any life long memories, watching Slayer thrash out new tracks on sound checks, Megadeth’s complete and utter professionalism and flawless performances, singing 'Hate World Wide' with Slayer in Melbourne when Tom’s voice went, watching my friend Paul Haug (Contrive) sing Dead Skin Mask perfectly in Melbourne – even throwing in the ..'the next song is about a man called Ed…' too the crowds adoration, to meeting Dave Mustaine and seeing how he goes out of his way for his fans in every city with their meet and greets etc, the whole thing personally was a celebration of metal and its supporters, and on behalf of Double Dragon we cant thank Megadeth, Slayer and the promoters enough for the experience of a lifetime.”

Following the release of their debut album, "Devastator," in Australia, the band is now hard at work recording their second album before they had out on the road again with Chimaira in 2010 for an Australian tour.

On the new material Lee states “We have definitely changed alot in our five years, even since our release of our debut album , and this time around we are really just wanting to write the best metal we can – we are not going to say its heavier than DEVASTATOR and all the usual pre-album cliché’s, but it will be more mature and more musical, obviously because we all get better at our instruments the longer we play! We also are seeking a home for our material outside of Australia, as we are now yearning to play some shows in Europe, USA and Japan, so if your that guy/girl lets talk, we are ready and waiting”

With the band currently unsigned, Double Dragon will be spending the next 6 months recording and seeking a suitable home for their new album, which promises to be “More metal than a robot’s cock, Aussie style!”

Slayer's New Album To Include Horror Short

Slayer has announced that the deluxe edition of their upcoming new album, "World Painted Blood," will contain a horror short inspired by their lyrical themes. Enter Metalocalypse director and big-time Slayer fan Mark Brooks who created a 20-minute DVD titled Playing with Dolls, a 12-episode video-graphic novel that will be included exclusively in Slayer's "World Painted Blood" Deluxe Edition, out November 3 in tandem with the "World Painted Blood" Standard Edition. Inspired by the songs on "World Painted Blood" - in particular, Jeff Hanneman's "Playing With Dolls" from which the horror short takes its title - the film blends elements of animation and still-photography into a visual style similar to that of a graphic novel.

A trailer for the short has just been posted at www.slayer.net The soundtrack for the "Playing With Dolls" short features clips from all 11 of the songs on World Painted Blood; in addition, the music bed for Episode #7 is taken from "Atrocity Vendor," a new song that is not on the album.

"It's not live action and it's not animated," Brooks explains. "It's a weird hybrid of the two, and I haven't seen a lot of things done this way."

The press release goes on to describe the concept further:

"No mere music video, Playing with Dolls is a stark, 12-part nightmare that breathes corrupt life into Slayer's latest syllabus of stalkers, psychopaths and serial killers, merging their aberrant psyches into the supremely focused desire of a single, merciless malcontent. A methodical distillation of one man's lethal frenzy, the film follows the gruesome outbursts of a nameless protagonist. He is not an indiscriminate murder junkie, but rather a highly creative snuff-artist with a deeply personal sense of purpose - a man for whom murder is the only conceivable way forward. With a black heart hardened by tragedy, he chooses his victims carefully. His methods are as grisly and varied as they are poetic."

"It's a little weirder than your regular blood n' guts type thing," Brooks says of the storyline, "which I think is a reflection of Slayer's music."

But make no mistake: There will be blood, and plenty of it. As the real-life boyfriend of one of the film's "victims" told Brooks after a private screening, "I almost threw up while I watching that. And I think that's a compliment."

Slayer started recording World Painted Blood, the band's 10th studio album, last October in a Los Angeles studio with producer Greg Feldeman, and completed it this past May. Recording World Painted Blood was a unique experience for Slayer who has historically begun the recording process with all songs written and fully rehearsed. This time, they did the bulk of writing and song development while in the studio. According to drummer Dave Lombardo, "On this record, we worked a lot more collectively, we were more attentive to each other's ideas and willing to try them, which only benefited the album."

World Painted Blood is, indeed a Slayer album, and consequently deals with topics such as death and destruction, war, serial killers, and the Apocalypse. "Psychopathy Red," leaked online a year ago, was inspired by the heinous Russian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, aka the Rostov Ripper, who confessed to brutally murdering 56 children. "Beauty Through Order" (Kerry King: "one of Jeff's songs, it has a very heavy 'do me' intro to it then explodes with a really cool vibe,") "Unit 731," "Playing With Dolls" (Lombardo: an awesome track, great song structure, great vibe"), "Public Display of Dismemberment," and "Americon," a King composition. Of "Americon," King explains, "It's about what I think the rest of the world thinks of America. We may not be big on a lot of people's lists, but I don't care what you think of my government, of my economy, or whatever. I live here and this is one of the best places that I've ever found to live. So f*#k you if you don't like it."

Tales From The Pit: Letting It Out In A Slayer Pit

We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week’s story is from Jussi Heikkinen, the guitarist of Soulgrind:

"Slayer pit, of course. I remember one, when they were playing here in Finland at sauna Open Air, tampere. I just got a ticket from cops for driving too fast. They also took my driving licence for a couple of months, so I was REALLY pissed off when arriving to the gig. So I ran to the pit and got violent. In a positive way :) I jammed, slammed, hit, and banged with all of my heart and my over 100 kg weight. And after the gig, some youngsters came to me and thanked me about my great attitude in the pit. And thanked for me for hitting them HARD! That’s Slayer pit, indeed."

Soulgrind will perform at the UK's Femme Metal Festival at The Peel in Kingston, London on Sunday, November 8, 2009.

Slayer Forced to Cancel Adelaide Show

Slayer vocalist Tom Araya was advised by his doctors not to perform at the band's October 11th show at the Thebarton Theatre in Adelaide, Australia, due to severe laryngitis. Slayer and the crew were on route to Adelaide with the full intention of performing but were forced to cancel the date due to doctor-mandated rest. Co-headliners Megadeth performed an extended set at the Thebarton.

The remainder of the shows will proceed as planned, with Slayer and Megadeth performing at Challenge Stadium in Perth this Tuesday 13th October, and Slayer performing a full set including the classic "Reign in Blood" album in its entirety at Luna Park Sydney this Thursday 15th October.

Slayer extends an apology to their Adelaide fans for their cancellation.

Megadeth frontman, Dave Mustaine, comments: "I am sorry that Tom lost his voice, and he is such a dymanic singer that there is not really anyone who can join them and do what Mr. Araya does. I did hope that Kerry would have be able to do a song when we were in Adelaide, but I guess I will just have to settle on how good things are for now and be happy with that."

Ex-Anthrax Singer Forms New Band With Paul Bostaph

In a recent interview with The Metal Den's Randy "Rocket" Cody, former Anthrax lead singer Dan Nelson revealed that he has two new projects underway, including one with current Testament drummer Paul Bostaph, who was also a founding member of Forbidden, long time drummer for Slayer and former member of Exodus. Some excerpts from the interview are as follows:

Rocket: You told me you’re now working on a new musical project. Is it going to be a solo Dan Nelson effort? Or with a new band entirely?

Nelson: "I have been writing my own music. But I am singing and playing guitar in the band Inside Hollow, as well as working on a new metal project with (drummer) Paul Bostaph (Testament, Slayer, Exodus, Forbidden) that is coming out killer! Where is it being recorded and who is producing it? No set studios or producers just yet. We are still in the writing process with both bands."

Rocket: When can fans expect to see it released?

Nelson: "I would say definitely 2010 for Inside Hollow, and hopefully the same for the other project."

Megadeth Frontman Denies "Big Four" Tour

In a recent message to the fans, Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine has spoken about the success of the bands latest record, "Endgame" and the bands long running feud with Metallica. The message reads as follows:

"I love you all so much. I see how much you want to help me, and how you are all helping squash the METALLICA bashing, and the poll at MH. I see how you are going out to the streets and checking in the stores and calling up the stations, and I appreciate it.

"The hard work begins now, and that starts with me. We have to prepare for a Phase 2 from the label (which should go without saying), but we are getting ready to choose a new single and Roadrunner's President told my manager Mark Adelman (best Megs manager to date), that they 'decided that they were going to go with a phase 2 for the new record.' I told our beloved webmaster this and in his childlike honesty he said, 'um, shouldn't there be like a phase 3, 4, and 5 too?' I said, 'One would think so,' so, I have to chalk this up to the hard work that you are all doing for us out on the streets.

"We are going to make some really killer posters available to you guys to download and print up to distribute in your towns and take to your favourite places (including but not limited to) clubs, stores, venues, events, arcades, tracks, courts, fields, and gyms. In return, we decided that we are going to make some show passes only available for those who really can rise to the occasion on helping us get in the trenches and again (including but not limited to) flier, poster, call and request, survey, research, and promote the band. Metallica Bassist Speaks About "Big Four" Tour

When recently talking to Metromix, Metallica bass player Robert Trujillo confirmed that the band is trying to put together a tour between themselves, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, also known as the "Big Four" of Thrash Metal. Speaking on the idea, he said; "I think it's great. We've had a few different conversations on the subject. . . . There's a lot of history there. I think it'd be great for metal. I don't think all four bands have played together at the same time." Pressed as to whether the rumors of the tour were true, Trujillo answered, "There is, but nothing's concrete. It's not a sealed deal. We're working on it."
