Deep Purple Announces New Album "Splat!"
Deep Purple will release their new studio album "Splat!" on July 3 via earMUSIC. The band – Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Don Airey, and Simon McBride – has once again teamed up with renowned producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Alice Cooper) and together, they have crafted an album that draws on the sound and attitude that has always set Deep Purple apart from the rest. Splat! is the heaviest Deep Purple album in many years, with the band playing together in the studio – the way Deep Purple have always recorded.
"I have to say, now we are very much back in with material that is compatible with ‘Highway Star,’ ‘Smoke On The Water,’ and ‘Lazy,’ the dynamics, the balance, and the fun of the music we made from ’69 to ’73," says frontman Ian Gillan. He adds: "Where we are now with this incarnation of Deep Purple feels very much like a very ‘now’ version of Deep Purple as it was in the seventies."
At the heart of "Splat!" is an idea conceived by Gillan. Rather than treating the end as destruction, the album imagines it as transformation: "Splat!" explores the end of humanity not in any crude apocalyptic sense but as a metamorphosis beyond physical existence.
Additional details about the album concept will be revealed in the weeks leading up to its July 3 release. New music from Splat! is on the way. More...

Deep Purple Shares New Music Video "7 And 7 Is"
With strong tailwind from last year’s chart leading album "Whoosh!," Deep Purple surprises with new album "Turning To Crime," produced by Bob Ezrin.
"Turning To Crime" arrives only 15 months after "Whoosh!" - Deep Purple’s 21st studio album, which received acclaim by critics who praised the creative strength of a band that continues evolving with every release, and prestigious chart achievements (3rd consecutive #1 in Germany, #4 in the UK, and topped the US Independent Album and Hard Music Albums charts).
This new release is Deep Purple’s first album of tracks that weren’t written by the band; a collection of songs previously recorded by other artists. The first single, "7 And 7 Is," is available for streaming below, along with a trailer for the "making of" documentary, "Locked Up."
"Turning To Crime" continues the creative trajectory set in motion with Deep Purple’s “time trilogy”, consisting of "NOW What?!" (2013), "inFinite" (2017), and "Whoosh!." Each produced by Bob Ezrin, these albums sold over 1 million copies, topped the charts 11 times, and garnered more than 40 Top 10 positions worldwide. More...
Legendary Producer Martin Birch Passes Away
Martin Birch, the legendary producer best known for his work with Iron Maiden from 1981 to 1992, as well as Black Sabbath's first two albums with Ronnie James Dio, has sadly died at the age of seventy two. Birch also worked with such bands as Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult, Fleetwood Mac, Rainbow and Whitesnake, with whom he worked with from 1978 to 1984.
Whitesnake vocalist David Coverdale paid tribute to Birch, saying: "It is with a very heavy heart I've just had verified my very dear friend and producer Martin Birch has passed away.
"Martin was a huge part of my life...helping me from the first time we met through until Slide It In... My thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and fans... Broken heart."
Other notable people who led tributes included Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler, who said: "Really sad to hear of the passing of Martin Birch. Brilliant producer. Had the pleasure of working with him on the Black Sabbath albums Heaven And Hell and Mob Rules. Condolensces to Vera and family."
While Wendy Dio added: "My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Vera and his daughter Haley. He was a genius producer and a very dear friend of Ronnie’s (James Dio). May he RIP."
Deep Purple Uneils New Music Video
Deep Purple will release their 21st studio album, "Whoosh!" - produced by the legendary Bob Ezrin - on June 12, available as a Standard CD, a Digital Album, a Limited Edition CD+DVD Mediabook (including the 1 hour feature “Roger Glover And Bob Ezrin In Conversation” and, for the first time, the full live performance at Hellfest 2017 video), and a Vinyl 2LP+DVD edition (earMUSIC). You can watch a video for the first single, "Throw My Bones", below.
Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Steve Morse, and Don Airey were invited by Bob Ezrin to Nashville to write and record, during which the band were inspired to push their creative boundaries. Letting go of any artistic limitations, they adopted the motto “Deep Purple is putting the Deep back in Purple”. "Whoosh!" embodies that freedom, with lyrics that reflect their sentiments on the current situation of the world.
"We’ve included everything that made the whole band smile, including Bob Ezrin," exclaims Morse. "We’ve always enjoyed making music and having the incredible luxury of a loyal audience."
"Whoosh!" marks Deep Purple’s third album produced by Ezrin (Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd). The first - 2013’s "Now What?!" - charted at #1 in five European countries, as well as Top 10 in over 15 countries worldwide. Cementing itself as one of their most successful albums, "inFinite," released in 2017, broke chart records the band accumulated over their 50+year history. With chemistry this electric, it only made sense for Deep Purple and Ezrin to collaborate a third time.

Deep Purple Issues New Video Clip "The Surprising"
Deep Purple is setting sail into new waters with their first-ever animated video. The official video for "The Surprising," one of the fan favorite tracks from the internationally successful album "inFinite," takes the viewer on a journey through the magical 50-year history of the band. With high attention to detail, the animated masterpiece follows the five heroes of our story – Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Don Airey, and Steve Morse – through a stormy ship cruise full of allusions and sees them riding off into the sunset.
Watch the video, which premiered via Ultimate Classic Rock, either at this location), or in the player below.
The video was directed and illustrated by Matt Rooke, alongside director Peter Rogers, who also produced the video together with Craig Hooper and Collin Games, known from the Deep Purple movie documentary "From Here to inFinite."
Deep Purple and earMUSIC also announce the release of the 97-minute documentary "From Here to inFinite," which is due out in November 2017. It shows the history and origin of "inFinite" and provides a deep insight into the workings of the band for the first time on Blu-ray!
The Blu-ray further includes two hours of bonus material, including music videos such as "The Surprising," three previously unreleased live videos ("Time for Bedlam," "Birds of Prey," and "Smoke on the Water"), all filmed and recorded at Hellfest 2017, as well as in-depth behind the scenes footage, movie documentary outtakes, interviews, and an audio commentary by Deep Purple themselves — all previously unreleased.
In conjunction with the release of the Blu-ray, Deep Purple and earMUSIC are also releasing "The infinite Live Recorings, Pt. 1" on a special 3-disc vinyl LP, produced by Bob Ezrin. This was recorded at Hellfest 2017, the biggest metal festival in France and contains a brand new previously unreleased 80min live performance.

Graspop Metal Meeting 2017: Day Two
After one hell of an opening day and a second night of camping, those attending this year's edition of the Graspop Metal Meeting festival had by now settled into the routine and were ready for another day. Once again, the day promised a mix of legendary names, young blood and cult favourites (or perhaps in the case of one Norwegian act, that should be "kvlt" favourites.)
Following a delay and miscomunication, I was unfortunately unable to catch Axel Rudi Pell and so my second full day at Graspop opened with a trip to Main Stage 2, which was being graced by Devildriver. Though they're not the biggest metal band of recent memory, performing at ten past one in the afternoon was something of a surprise. This did not deter the group from playing with full force and intensity and getting so many rockers' Saturday off to a great start. Frontman Dez Fafara was able to interact very well with the crowd and the high energy the group displayed at the very least impressed those in the audience who are not fans of Devildriver and delighted those who came to see them intentionally. Sunday Old School: Deep Purple
It’s a widely accepted fact that it’s important to know your history and generally agreed upon that one should also be aware of their roots. With that in mind, it seemed an appropriate to finally devote a Sunday Old School column to one of the most important bands in the history of heavy metal, though they may not strictly fit the tag by the modern definition. Most people, when discussing the first metal bands will point to three groups, all formed in England; Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, both from the Midlands are two and the other was born in the country’s capital. The other is named, Deep Purple.
Deep Purple was initially conceived as a supergroup called Roundabout, named so because the idea was for musicians to join and leave the band whenever they wanted. It was the brainchild of drummer Chris Curtis, who began assembling the band with the help of manager Tony Edwards, beginning with organist, Jon Lord and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Curtis was soon fired from the group owing to his behaviour and was eventually replaced by Ian Paice, who was brought along by singer Rod Evans during his own successful audition for the band, who by that time had also brought in a bassist by the name of Nick Simper. After performing a few shows in Sweden and Denmark, Blackmore suggested they change their moniker to Deep Purple, reportedly in honour of his grandmother’s favourite song. The suggestion was accepted and they began life as the outfit we all know today. More...
