Sunday Old School: Destruction
When thinking about the history of thrash metal, one usually always thinks of the Bay Area in the United States first, followed quickly by the thrash scene on the East Coast. But there was another scene in the 1980s that was just as important, namely the one in Germany. Much like America has it's "Big Four" of thrash (Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer), Germany has it's "Three Kings" who consist of Sodom, Kreator and our featured band of the day, Destruction. Destruction were formed in the town of Weil am Rhein under the name of Knight Of Demon in 1982 but (wisely) decided to change their name to Destruction two years later. During this year they were able to release an EP entitled, "Sentance Of Death" through Steamhammer Records before releasing their debut full length album, "Infernal Overkill" in 1985. The band was originally a trio but added a second guitarist in the form of Harry Wilkens, with whom they recorded another two albums, a live record and an EP before lead singer and bass player Marcel "Schmier" Schirmer was asked to leave the band due to creative differences. He would respond by forming the band Headhunter.
After splitting with Schmier, the band found themselves going through a terrible period commercially, having lost their record label support in favour of grunge music, the band had to self- finance and self-release their new albums. Eventually, Schmier was asked back into the band and the reunited team of Schmier and guitarist Mike Hilfiger, along with drummer Sven Vormann, were able to secure a deal with Germany's Nuclear Blast Records, releasing several highly acclaimed studio albums ever since such as "All Hell Breaks Loose," "The Antichrist" and most recently, "D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N." Destruction still tour the world today, appearing at many of the big European festivals and heading out on headlining tours of their own. More...

"Quote e-mail from: nik@justsayrock.com.au Betreff: TERRIBLE NEWS/DECISION Datum: 19. November 2009 05:58:22 MEZ An: joerg@twisted-talent.com
"'Hi Joerg/Schmier It is with my deepest sorrow and regret that I have to inform all at Twisted Talent and Destruction that the Board and owners of Just Say Rock have made a tough decision. Due to a drastic slow down of sales for Screamfest Australia and excessive poor sales for the Destruction side shows; The board of Just Say Rock cannot afford to bring Destruction down to Australia for the festival and other shows. I literally fought tooth and nail and tried everything in order to persuade them not to make this decision. However, I am not the owner and I do not fund the company, which was pointed out to me. Evile's Ol Drake To Guest w/ Destruction
German thrash titans DESTRUCTION will dedicate their set at Damnation Festival in Leeds, UK to EVILE bassist Mike Alexander, who tragically passed away on October 5th, 2009 while on tour in Sweden. The festival will take place at Leeds University Union this Saturday, October 24th. EVILE lead guitarist Ol Drake will make a guest appearance on guitar with DESTRUCTION, to play some of Mike's favourite DESTRUCTION tracks with the band. Ol Drake also recently filled in on guitar for DESTRUCTION at Portugal's Caos Emergente festival.
Ol Drake comments:
"Mike was a huge Destruction fan. It'll be a great way to pay tribute to him by jamming some of his favourite Destruction songs with Schmier, Marc and Mike. Throughout playing with Evile, Mike was always cautiously calm about exciting things. "Mike, we're touring with Megadeth!" - "Oh, cool". "Mike, we're touring with Exodus!" - "Oh, cool". I just knew he jumped around like a child when he got home, but when I called him to say I'm playing a show with Destruction in Portugal he went "OH MY GOD!!!!!!! WHOAAAA, you bastard! Wow!"
"I got to pass on one of Schmier's picks from him to Mike before the last tour and it made his day. Thank you to Destruction for wanting to dedicate their next set to Mike and for letting me jam some songs in his honour."
DESTRUCTION bassist and vocalist Schmier comments:
"Ol Drake became a very close friend to the band since he helped us out after the broken finger affair. When I heard that Mike Alexander died I was speechless and shocked. I had to sit down. The world never was a fair place. This again was a situation that shows how fast everything can be over and out. Mike Alexander was such a positive and funny guy, his band on the way to the top, a fucking shame and a tragedy.
"Evile and Destruction thought it would be a cool thing to dedicate the Destruction gig in Leeds this weekend at the Damnation festival to Mike Alexander. We will jam his fave Destruction tunes with Ol on the second guitar. We are sure Mike would have loved this - a memorable way for us to remember a lost friend! Rock in peace brother!"
DESTRUCTION will play on the Jagermeister stage at 7:30pm this Saturday, October 24th at Damnation festival, Leeds.
EVILE will be unveiling a tribute site to Mike Alexander shortly and will welcome comments, memories and photos. Donations are welcome for Mike's children and family via UKthrash.co.uk and Wiseblood Management.
Rocktival Festival Canceled
German metallers Destruction have issued the following statement about the Ankara Festival being canceled by the promoter:
"This is a sad story. The second festival in Turkey got canceled by the promoter. First Instanbul & now the ROCKTIVAL in Ankara. The band is really dissapointed, hopefully 2010 will be a better year for Turkish Thrash Maniacs.
"Here is the mail from the promoter: 'Hello, I’m Arman Tekin from rocktival. Festival was cancelled because of financial and other secret problems. We sent necessary informations about this issue to your manager but he looks mail late because of he is busy. We wanted to indict this situation and we can arrange turkey tour in our and your free times in 2010 for making up cancellation of festival. However you want. Thank you for everything See you later'"

Destruction will play the Chaos Emergente Festival next week in Portugal (maybe with replacement guitar players), the release party shows, at the end of the month. I will be back on the track for sure!
According to Destruction's website, "the injury happened at the Vlamrock festival in Belgium. Destruction In NY With Weapons of Thrash
On Tuesday April 7th, 2009 I went to BBKings in New York City to see Destruction perform, with Krisiun and Mantic Ritual as support, at their last show on tour. As I walked into the venue, I found that it was practically empty. The emptiness of the venue was a bit disappointing for such a popular 80s thrash metal band. I also noticed the awesome equipment on stage: Ampeg bass amp stacks and Engl guitar amp half stacks. Both have to be my favorite brands for bass and guitar amps respectively. Another thing I saw was that there was only one set of gear on stage. It is rare that I see a band nice enough to lend their gear out to the openers. Short changeovers between bands are always a good thing. More...
