Scooter Ward Announces Cold's Demise

COLD have called it a day after the disappointing sales performance of the band's fourth album, "A Different Kind of Pain". Frontman Scooter Ward's official statement on the matter (as it appears on the band's message board) reads as follows:

"This is one of the hardest things I've ever had to write, but I've always been straight-up with y'all [the fans] and kept you informed.

"The week before our record was released, Jason Flom and Lee Trink (the two presidents of Lava and Atlantic) were fired. Those were the two people that we had faith would deliver this record like it should of been delivered.

"I'm not blaming Atlantic for what happened, because they did give us a chance to put these songs out and see what was to come. And a few people that tried to work it, COLD thanks them for their time and help.

"When you put a song out on the radio, it is what it is. It's a gamble on your life and your career and your hope. People just didn't react the way we had hoped they would.

"We appreciate all your hard work on trying to promote the record and we love all of you guys, but now I ask you to lay down your arms! The battle is over.

"Since we've gotten off tour in December, we haven't even talked to the label. Hell, I wouldn't even know who to call. But instead of having someone tell us that it's over, we choose to tell them instead. We bled on those tracks and the label just didn't see what they had. The industry today is too jaded and fake.

"Instead of being upset and bitter about this, we reflect on what we did do. We got to touch people's lives for the better part of a decade. We got to experience things we only dreamed about all our lives and for that we are grateful. God, I love you guys so much! And I'm more worried about y'all than I am myself.

"I know that some of you need our music like we do too. And I'll never quit writing songs for y'all. Sam [McCandless, drums] and I are going to start a new project. If God allows us to do this (which I have confidence that he will), you will hear songs again from us some day.

"We made it through a lot of hard times and a lot of bands dream of having a career that lasted as long as ours. We have never made a DVD, and that's the first thing I'm gonna work on. We have footage from the making of the first record until now.

"Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart for what you have given me and COLD. It's too hard to express in words how I feel about y'all, so I'm not even attempting that.

"I know a lot of people are gonna be mad and say that I gave up on them. But I didn't. This is just another bump in the road called life.

"Music has been the important thing to me since i was a lil' kid. I chose to make records instead of being with my family and my two lil' girls, so don't ever say that we gave up, please.

"Some might say we gave up becuase of the money. For some reason, people think we're rich rock stars who live in mansions and all that, but that is far away from the truth. We made enough to survive and we have no regrets.

"I hope that you understand our decision to bow out gracefully instead of being told that we can't do this anymore. I wanted to disappear and shut myself off from the world of music, but I can't do that. My world is music. All I have in my life now are these songs that we created and memories of our life as COLD.

"Thank you guys for being our family for the last 10 years. We love you all and please try to understand our decision."

Xfest Report from Huntington, WV

This year’s X-fest was held at Harris Riverfront Park on Sept 17th. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon on the banks of the Ohio River. As with the year before, there were two stages, one for the headlining acts and one for the “Loud and Local” acts. This year’s big pull and headliner was Seether.

I arrived at the show late by about an hour or so, missing some of the opening acts on both stages. As with last years show I was given the run around regarding my photo-pass which should have been waiting for me at the front gate. Though this year it didn’t take an hour to figure out I was on this list, which was miss placed at the will call window and I only back tracked once. More...

Cold Video For "Happens All The Time" Online

COLD's video for their new single, "Happens All the Time", has been posted online at RollingStone.com.

"Happens All the Time" is the first single off the Florida-based band's upcoming fourth album, "A Different Kind Of Pain", which is due out on August 30.

COLD frontman Scooter Ward recently told Launch Radio Networks that he went through all kinds of pain before making the disc: his fiancée left him, he entered rehab, two guitarists departed COLD, and the band split with their label. Worst of all, Ward's sister was given two months to live in a battle with cancer (Ward says that his sister's illness is now in remission).

COLD revamped their lineup and signed a new deal with Lava/Atlantic Records last year.

Cold Tour Dates Announced

Launch Radio Networks reports: Florida-based band COLD has announced some dates to promote its upcoming fourth album, "A Different Kind Of Pain", which is due out on August 30. COLD frontman Scooter Ward went through all kinds of pain before making the disc: his fiancée left him, he entered rehab, two guitarists departed COLD, and the band split with its label. Worst of all, Ward's sister was given two months to live in a battle with cancer. Ward told Launch that writing the new record helped him get through this very rough patch. "Every song that I wrote, I'd go, 'I'm gonna make every song make me feel better, and when that song's done, I'm gonna feel better about myself and the situation that I've created,'" he said. "And it happened, and every song kept helping me. It made me stronger and helped me get through the drugs and all that stuff and the rehab and started changing my life. By the time the record was done, my life was good."

Ward says that his sister's illness is now in remission.

COLD revamped its lineup and signed a new deal with Lava/Atlantic Records last year.

The first single from "A Different Kind Of Pain" is called "Happens All The Time". Listen to it online at this location.

Aug. 19 - Seattle, WA - White River Amphitheatre

Cold's Scooter Ward Defends Guitarist Departure

Cold frontman Scooter Ward has responded to fan criticism regarding the departure of guitarist Eddie Rendini. Writing to the group's official message board, Ward said, "Eddie wasn't the right musician for this band, no matter how fu**in cool he was. For [anyone] to say this isn't gonna be a Cold record is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I thank those of you who still have faith in us and when the record is released you will know who Cold is, was and will always be."

Cold Fire Guitarist

Cold have fired guitarist Eddie Rendini, although as yet the band have given no reason for this decision. The former Darwin's Waiting Room man joined Cold earlier this year, replaced Terry Balsamo, who joined Evanescence. The band are currently working on their new album, 'And A Sad Song Lives On' with producer Michael Baskette.

Cold Announce New Album Title

Cold have set "And a Sad Song Lives On" as the title of their new album, tentatively due early next year via the group's new label, Atlantic. The band will commence pre-production on the CD on October 14 with producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette (Chevelle, Iggy Pop).

Back in April, Cold parted ways with guitarist Kelly Hayes and replaced him with Matt Laughran, formerly of the pre-Cold outfit Grundig. Hayes, who has since joined the Jacksonville, Florida-based "modern rock" band Allele, was the second guitarist to leave Cold in less than six months. Late last year, Terry Balsamo exited the group to hook up with Evanescence. He has since been replaced by former Darwin's Waiting Room axeman Eddie Rendini.

Commented Cold frontman Scooter Ward: "A lot of people wondering what the new record will be like with the addition of two new guitar players. Sam [McCandless, drums] and I were very concerned when we started writing the new record. We wanted to make sure this is more Cold than it's ever been. It is important to us to keep that integrity. So Sam and I locked ourselves up in a room for two months and created.

"I'm shaking a little as I'm writing this because the chills and emotion behind this is insane.

"Matt and Eddie will play on the record and continue to tour with us.

"Sam and I are very proud about this record not only because we did it ourselves its also because Atlantic is being very supportive and excited and letting us be artist again. This record will dominate everything weve ever done. I have never felt like this before about our music. It's a new world for Cold. Me beeing sober now might have something to do with that also. But it's exciting for us."

Released in 2003, Cold' last album, "Year of the Spider", debuted at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 500,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Vinnie Paul Calls Cold Singer An Asshole

In the latest installment of his "Ask Vinnie" column in Revolver magazine, DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA drummer Vinnie Paul was asked which bands he used to get into fights with on the road, and which ones he would want to fight if he had the chance.

"We always made friends with all the bands we ever toured with," Vinnie responded. "The only asshole I ever had to throw out of my house was Scooter Ward of COLD. The night manager had to kick his ass. Then I was nice enough to send him his cell phone the next day, but he gave me a bogus Federal Express number and I wound up taking that bill in the head. Thanks Scooter — jackass!"

Cold Sign To Atlantic Records

Cold have signed a new deal with Atlantic Records following their split with the Geffen label back in March. At the time, the group's frontman Scooter Ward blamed the split on "a disagreement on how to promote our band. They wouldn't do what we wanted, so we asked if they would let us go," he said.

Cold have completed eight songs for the follow-up to 2003's "Year of the Spider" and plan on entering Long View Farm Studios in North Brookfield, MA with producer/former Ugly Kid Joe guitarist Dave Fortman (Superjoint Ritual, Evanescence) "a couple of weeks after [Dave] finishes [producing the new] Mudvayne" album, according to Ward. "We will probably start touring again in December (headline only)," Scooter said.

Kelly Hayes Leaves Cold

It seems COLD just aren't having great luck with members these days. Now, guitarist Kelly Hayes has left COLD and has been temporarily replaced by Matt Laughran, formerly of the pre-COLD outfit GRUNDIG.

"Yes, it is true," COLD frontman Scooter Ward confirmed in a posting on the band's official message board. "Kelly has left us. and instead of canceling the tour we got Matt to fill his position for this tour.

"Sam [McCandless, drums], Jeremy [Marshall, bass] and I have always been the core of COLD," he continued. "We write the music, we care about our fans and we will always be COLD. We were in shock also. But we can't have someone in the band that doesn't feel the music anymore. That's all we are about. Everything is fine."

Hayes, who is believed to have joined the Jacksonville, Florida-based "modern rock" band ALLELE (web site), is the second guitarist to leave COLD in less than six months. Late last year, Terry Balsamo exited the group to hook up with EVANESCENCE. He has since been replaced by former DARWIN'S WAITING ROOM axeman Eddie Rendini.
