Background

On first listen, Nightwish seems to fall into the same genre as Evanescence, Lacuna Coil and The Gathering – female-fronted metal band with symphonic and gothic overtones. But any similarities end there. Singer Tarja Turunen, a trained opera singer, adds a new dimension to the band and separates Nightwish from other bands. Then there's the rest of the group, led by keyboardist and primary songwriter Tuomas Holopainen. Listen closely, and you'll hear a group that's equally influenced by opera, classical music, Euro-metal, early thrash and even Kate Bush. Nightwish formed as an acoustic-based band in, but quickly switched to a hard rock sound.

Sonata Arctica Gears Up For American Tour

SONATA ARCTICA is currently preparing their fifth trip to North America. Returning to the western hemisphere to play 21 shows with fellow Finns Nightwish (fronted by new Swedish lead singer Anette Olzon) and playing six headlining shows of their own, keyboardist Henkka shares the process of choosing set lists, the prospect of shows in Hawaii and Las Vegas, shopping lists, liver transplants, and an update on Conan O’Brien:

“About the set lists, it's a process of trial and error, mostly error. We actually had some time to rehearse a couple of songs we're never played live before and we're gonna do these now on this tour. Most of the songs will, however, be a nice mixture of old and new favorites, some to which you can dance and some to which you can't. We tried hard to bring this tour to Hawaii, but not hard enough. I think I sent a request to have all off-days in either Hawaii or Las Vegas but neither seems to be possible this time, so we'd probably end up staying on the bus in front of a Wal-mart somewhere. Speaking of Wal-mart, our shopping lists include: socks, Chivas Regal 12 years old, Frank Zappa CDs, cowboy boots, Marlboro Lights, ice, more Chivas, and new Zippo lighters. I sincerely believe our Finnish super-livers will survive many more tours than this one, so no liver transplants will be necessary. Conan O’Brien should still fear having us show up in his studio audience because we WILL prevail! Eventually we're bound to succeed according to the great prophecies of Reverend Lance. What would be greater than appearing on his first show when he replaces Jay Leno? We'll keep the rest of the plan a secret.”

The band will be keep their fans updated via their Royal Artist Club mobile blog with “behind-the-scenes” adventures during their North American trek. The site can be viewed here.

SONATA ARCTICA's latest album, Unia - released in North America last May - landed on international album charts in Finland (#1), Japan (#7), Sweden (#27), Germany (#35), Switzerland (#40), and Austria (#62). The "Paid In Full" single also secured the #1 Single slot in their mother land.

Arch Enemy Guitarist Speaks On Current Metal Scene

Arch Enemy guitarist Michael Ammot recently spoke with Metal-Rules.com. During the interview he gave his own opinions on the current metal scene and acts such as Bullet For My Valentine and Nightwish:

Metal-Rules.com: How much have you been following the Metal scene yourself what's 'hot' or 'in' these days, what kinds of things the media and people in general talk about?

Michael Amott: "Hype is hype, isn't it? I like what I like. I don't really follow it that closely. But now everything's 'Metal.' you know, that band's Metal, this band's Metal, but it doesn't really sound like Metal at all, it doesn't have the atmosphere of extreme Metal. I think people are just calling everything Metal now, they think NIGHTWISH is Metal (laughs). I mean, they're a great band, but they're not a Metal band. They have influences from Metal, but they have a lot of other things going on as well. Everybody is different, but now everything is Metal. NIGHTWISH is a bad example. A band like BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, I wouldn't say is an out-and-out Metal band. I would say they have some influences from Metal, but I wouldn't say they're a Metal band. They have some stuff that's quite commercial, like pop orientated. I haven't heard their new album but I've seen stuff previously on MTV. I know here in Finland you have some bands that are kind of commercial but you could call them Metal. I don't think it's called Metal here, but when it's exported it is. I don't really know what Metal is anymore. To me, Metal is the stuff I grew up on. There's a certain kind of feeling I look for when I listen to Metal."

Nightwish Cancels Sayreville, NJ Show

Finnish/Swedish symphonic metallers NIGHTWISH have cancelled the first show (May 5 at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey) of their previously announced spring 2008 U.S. tour due to logistical reasons. According to a source familiar with the situation, NIGHTWISH's gear was to fly from Mexico City, where the band is performing on May 2 and May 3. This flight — the only one from Mexico to Newark — was cancelled by the airline and the group and its specific gear that is needed in order to produce the concert that fans pay to see was unable to arrive in New Jersey in time. Endless effort was made for this to be corrected and it was not a success.

Pain Post Another Update From The Nightwish Tour

PAIN, fronted by HYPOCRISY's Peter Tägtgren, has checked in from the NIGHTWISH tour with the following update:

"Sorry for taking so long time between the blogs, but most places in Spain didn't have internet and we are consuming mobile phones like alcohol.

All of the shows we did in Spain was awesome. Thank you for your support!

Two days ago we arrived to country #18, the last country for us on this tour. Our arrival day was also a day off which we spent with Nightwish at their hotel. No memories from that at all I'm afraid. The day after (April 18th) we started to do preparations for the last show (more info of that later) and had a couple of nice walks in the rain. The show we did the same evening was really good. We all had a blast on stage and the audience was really in to it. Many thanks Porto!!! After the show we went with NW to a afterparty we were invited to. We had a really good time. Thanks for the invitations!

Today we are in Lisbon. The last stop on this tour, and we all feel a bit sad that it's almost over. These 8 weeks has felt like 2 weeks and every day has been a blast. Still, I know everyone is longing for their families, their own beds and their own toilets.

Now... for the last show. Usually bands and crew on a tour pull pranks on each other the last show, and I guess this tour is no exception. But we also have gone together with NW to pull a prank on YOU, the audience, which going to be something really special and for sure something that no one has ever seen/heard before and probably never will again. I can't wait...."

Pain Frontman Posts Update

PAIN has checked in from the NIGHTWISH tour with the following update:

"We left Manchester early this day off to travel to the English border and take the underground train back to the European continent. When we got to the border we got a phone call from Pekka, one of Nightwish truck drivers. He told us that he was two hours north of London and that a wheel axle had broke on his 35 ton truck. He noticed it because one of the wheels exploded from the heat generated from the fire that started and jeopardised the whole truckload. Since we were closest we canceled our train and went back to London to help Pekka reload the whole trailer into a new one he managed to find. It's a good thing this happened on a day off, otherwise something else would. We only hope we'll be in time in Paris tomorrow.

Otherwise, the show in Manchester yesterday was awesome; 3,400 people can't be wrong. Tomorrow we'll have our catering back. That means no more starving.

Everything taste better with fire in your mouth!" More...

"This tour, which crisscrosses the US and Canada, comes hot on the heels of the band’s sold out fall tour, where they debuted new singer Anette Olzon to their legion of adoring and curious fans. These same fans continue to clamor for another dose of Nightwish’s soaring, symphonic metal and they’re about to get it!" More...

Pain Check In From London

PAIN, has checked in from their tour with NIGHTWISH with the following update:
London:

"We arrived three days ago in London. The visit started out with a day off in the bus at a parking lot. As usual we were broke, but our secret guest on the bus (that by the way is Johan's wife Lena) offered herself to lend us money if we could find a cash machine. We found one, which ate her VISA-card and we were back on step one again. After a horrible 24 houres in the bus eating things we could find on the floor with The Nutty Professor on TV we did our first show in London. Since the night before had been calm I think we did an excellent job. The crowd though seemed more shocked and 'tagen på sängen' but still enjoying the show.

After the show and after Nightwish had finished we took a walk to 'Bröderna Olson' (old Swedish tradition) to get a 'Blood Shot' but they had already closed so we continued to Crowbar (old Swedish tradition) to finish off the evening.

Tonight we made our second show in London (also sold out) and tonight things were better. You Londoners really are getting hooked on PAIN, that's for sure. Many thanks!!!

Right now Nightwish are finishing their last songs and our plan is to do a re-run of last night. We're off to Crowbar in a couple of minutes (it's like Pub Anchor in Stockholm) to meet some old friends.

Apart from that, I would like to appoligize for the gap between our posts. We had so much fun we haven't thought of it (also my phone has died and England doesn't seem to have wireless internet on their venues). The picture on the left is taken at Astoria, our gig place and notorious gay club host in London.

See you tomorrow!!!" More...
