Limp Bizkit Bassist Sam Rivers Dies Aged 48
Rap/nu metal stars Limp Bizkit has announced that Sam Rivers, the bassist who co-founded the band with vocalist Fred Durst, has passed away at the age of 48. A message from the band reads as follows:
"Today we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat.
"Sam Rivers wasn’t just our bass player — he was pure magic. The pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound.
"From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced. His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous.
"We shared so many moments — wild ones, quiet ones, beautiful ones — and every one of them meant more because Sam was there.
"He was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of human. A true legend of legends. And his spirit will live forever in every groove, every stage, every memory.
"We love you, Sam. We’ll carry you with us, always.
"Rest easy, brother. Your music never ends.
— Fred, Wes, John & DJ Lethal"
Sam Rivers met Fred Durst in the early nineties while working at a mall and the two decided to jam together. They eventually added drummer John Otto, erroneously thought to be a cousin of Rivers, to the fold before guitarist Wes Borland joined. Rivers performed on every Limp Bizkit release, including guitar on the "Results May Vary" album on select tracks. He suffered from health problems over the years, at one point undergoing a liver transplant.
Limp Bizkit Premiere New Single For Battlefield 6
Limp Bizkit’s new single, the provocatively titled Making Love To Morgan Wallen, has officially landed online. Despite its eyebrow-raising nod to the multi-platinum country star, the track arrives in partnership with the upcoming video game Battlefield 6. It marks the nü-metal icons’ first new music since 2021 and is being released via EA Games/Hollywood Records.
The song was first jokingly teased earlier this month through drummer Kristina Rybalchenko’s social media. While frontman Fred Durst is known as an avid gamer, the band’s involvement with Battlefield 6 appears to be a professional tie-in.
Additionally, a remix of Bizkit’s 1999 hit Break Stuff was featured in an early trailer for the game, viewable below. Battlefield 6 is scheduled for release on October 10th through EA Games.
Evanescence Premiere New Single “Afterlife”
Evanescence, the diamond-certified metal band, has just released their new track "Afterlife." This song was created in collaboration with Netflix's upcoming animated adaptation of the popular Devil May Cry video game series, which will begin streaming on April 3rd. The series is embracing the nü-metal vibe, featuring a Limp Bizkit classic for its opening theme and using Papa Roach's early 2000s hit "Last Resort" in its recent trailer.
In addition to "Afterlife," Evanescence has been working on their sixth studio album and more new material.
Kaosis Premiere Full-Album Stream
New Zealand nü-metal outfit Kaosis have officially unleashed their new studio album, “We Are The Future”. This ambitious project includes a slew of guest appearances, gradually revealed over the past year as tracks were released one by one. To handle the album's intense percussion demands, (hed)p.e. drummer Jeremiah Stratton was brought on board for studio drumming duties.
The band has also assembled a full album stream, incorporating the music videos previously released for each track.

I Went Back In Time & Covered The Wrong Woodstock
It's a question everyone gets asked. "If you could go back in time and see anyone, who would it be?" Well, being a metal site, we were eager to be at the event that inspired countless bands, stories and legends, Woodstock! So when a bearded, funny but antitheist man appeared outside the Metal Underground office with an offer to take one of us back in time to rock, I had no hesitation about pushing other staff members out of the way to witness some true icons, screaming "Woodstock!" Little did I know however, just how limited the fuel was and so, clad in tie dye, a bandana and with fifty sheets of acid sewn into my denim jacket, I was somewhat taken aback when instead of hearing the dulcet tones of Richie Havens, I was confronted by The Offspring with plastic baseball bats.
Realising that something was very wrong, I backed into another tent where two rapping clowns, confused by the workings of magnets, kicked beach balls with $100 bills stuck to them into the crowd. Still thinking it was the late sixties, I was bowled over by the giving away of such a large sum of money and figured that with a hundred bucks, I could eat like a king at the hot dog stand and sure enough, after having my head stamped into the ground by men with names like Kush Kronik, I was able to spot a note the face painted muggers missed. My head spinning, I made my way to enjoy an assortment of animal parts in a bun, only to find my plan had backfired spectacularly. My eyes stinging from the array of advertising boards, I handed over the $100 to the vendor and was perplexed when only $95 was handed back. More...

Metal Must Evolve
My biggest issue with metal in the 2010s is that in contrast to the past three decades, there's just a lack of creativity. Newer metalcore is being increasingly influenced by nu-metal and post-hardcore as the new musicians who are in their 20s and 30s are now playing music that's entirely an amalgam of what they grew up with as teens rather than creating anything new.
Blackgaze was novel for the first few years but now feels like the light beer version of black metal at this point that doesn't have the same edge that metal is supposed to have. I'm not sure if I want black metal to have a kinder, gentler, dare I say, “cuddlier” face when compared to the antisocial behavior that defined the second wave. When I hear a band like Alcest or Deafheaven, I don't feel like these are maniacs with serious mental issues precisely because it sounds way too calculated and professional for my aging ears.
Djent is nice but often feels too monotonous to really do justice to how technical it is. For, “progressive metal” the songwriting lacks the same level of unexpected changes in direction that make progressive rock acts like Rush and Yes so appealing. Yeah, Djent is heavy but it's also often predicable when unconventional songwriting is half of what separates metal and makes it so special and unique. Blackened sludge on the othe rhand is only going to appeal to people who want extremely raw production... who will never be great enough in number to establish a trend rather than a fad. More...
