Cynic Completes New Album, Announces European Tour
Technical/progressive metal legends CYNIC are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming album, to be released later this year via Season of Mist Records. Returning from the "Focus"-era are founding members Paul Masvidal (guitars/clean vocals) and Sean Reinert (drums) along with Sean Malone (bass), and joining the band in the studio is newcomer Tymon Kruidenier (guitars/growls). The band is currently doing the final stages of mixing with producer Warren Riker, and the band is extremely happy with the results.
In addition, the band has announced their first upcoming tour dates in Europe, with additional dates/touring to be announced in the near future (including US dates). The band has also been announced as the headliner for this year's ProgPower Europe festival, and will be playing a special extended set at the show.
Guitarist/vocalist Paul Masvidal had this to say:
"Sean and I are pleased to announce the completion of album #2. We've been on an amazing journey discovering this new music and soon it will be yours. Expect the unexpected. The album is an intensely concentrated mosaic of internal and external energies, from the deepest peace to the purest aggression. There's an acquired taste that comes with a record of this density, but once your ears wrap themselves around the language at work, everything falls into place and suddenly you'll feel a sudden urge to sing, scream or maybe even cry. The album has a beginning, middle and end. The story will reveal itself after numerous listens and then you may not want to let go. Besides Reinert and I, Tymon brought some new life force and magic to the record with fierce growling and poetic guitar sensibilities. Malone also did a fine job with the low end, grooving away with Reinert in a pocket land from hell!
"For the live department, due to Malone's other commitments, we're pleased to welcome Robin Zielhorst into the fold on bass along with Tymon growling and ripping it up on another glorious Steinberger! Robin's a phenomenal Dutch talent pulled from Tymon's brain into the madness of Cynic's musical melange. The band is now a fiery breathing entity, full of magic dust, ready to appear at your doorstep this summer. Please join us at an upcoming concert."

Cynic Finishes Mixing New Album
CYNIC drummer Sean Reinert has issued the following update:
“We are currently finishing up mixing the last two songs for the new CYNIC album with Warren Riker and could not be happier. It is really sounding amazing. I’m loving my drum sound! Paul’s [Masvidal, guitar/vocals] guitar tones are really killer. [Sean] Malone [bass] came down from Missouri for four days and tracked some great bass and stick lines. Tymon [Kruidenier, guitar/vocals] arrived [from Holland] last weekend and is now part of the fold. His growls and guitars are sounding sick!! We’ve been in a Glendale studio for almost 4 1/2 weeks now and yet I feel like we’ve been here a year! After we finish tomorrow night we will sit and live with the songs for a week before proceeding on to mastering. Right after that we start our rehearsals for the summer European mini-tour so keep a lookout for dates.”
Season Of Mist On Signing Cynic
Cynic, the famed technical/prog metal band, recently signed to record label Season Of Mist. Here's what Season Of Mist had to say on the catch:
"Season of Mist is really proud to announce that a new cult band just joined the roster. Let's welcome legendary American progressive jazzy death metal band Cynic! Most of the label's team have been a fan of the band's milestone and so far only album, "Focus", so needless to say we at Season of Mist are all extremely excited about this new collaboration.
Cynic frontman Paul Masvidal made the following comment on signing over to the new label:
"We're pleased to be back in business with Season of Mist as our record company. They have tremendous enthusiasm and passion for our work. Our bottom line was a company that understood what Cynic does and believes in it 100%. We found that with SOM. We're deep in the pre-production album process now and will be headed into the studio in a couple weeks to dive even deeper and start the recordings with our talented friend Warren Riker at the engineering / mixing helm. The journey of writing this record has taken Reinert and I to new heights of exploration, straight into the heart of Cynic's soul. We're thrilled to be able to share this new work with the best fans in the world. Stay tuned."
Cynic's debut album for their new label should see a release sometime next Autumn. In the meantime, you can check out a sample of the demo to the new track "Integral Birth" on their official MySpace page. The band is set to enter the studio this Summer with Grammy Award winning producer Warren Riker (Down, Santana) to begin work on their long-awaited follow-up to 1993's "Focus". The album will reportedly comprise eight tracks, and the band is again working with artist Venosa, who created the unmistakeable cover and visuals for "Focus." Live performances, including a special appearance at Wacken Open Air, Germany, on next August 1st, will precede the upcoming album.
Cynic Signs With Season Of Mist Records
The following press release has been announced:
Reunited progressive metallers CYNIC, whose 1993 album Focus is regarded as a landmark release in the field of technical/progressive metal, have inked a worldwide deal with France's Season Of Mist Records.
The band is set to enter the studio this summer with Grammy-award winning producer Warren Riker (DOWN, SANTANA) to begin work on it's long-awaited follow-up to Focus. The CD will contain eight songs, and the band is working once again with renowned artist Venosa (who created the unmistakeable cover and visuals for Focus).
A late 2008 release is expected, to be supported by additional live shows, soon to be announced.
Cynic founding members Paul Masvidal (guitar, vocals) and Sean Reinert (drums), who both gained reputation and praise while performing alongside Chuck Schuldiner and DEATH in the recording and touring lineup for the milestone album Human, recently spent time at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida working on the mix for three new demo tracks with producer Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, CHIMAIRA, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, DEVILDRIVER, etc.).
The three new songs - 'Integral Birth' (which can be heard on the band's MySpace page), 'Evolutionary Sleeper' and 'Adam's Murmur' - led to the return of Focus bassist Sean Malone, who had heard the demo material and was excited by it. Although Sean had been busy as a teacher in another state, he renewed his ties with Masvidal and Reinert and it was decided that Malone would join them both for the recording of the second album, as well as live shows whenever possible.
Rounding out the group's current lineup is Tymon Kruidenier, a talented guitarist out of the Netherlands who will also handle the aggressive vocals.
Cynic Planning "World Tour" In The Fall
Drummer Sean Reinert of the reunited progressive metallers CYNIC, whose 1993 album "Focus" is regarded as a landmark release in the field of technical/progressive metal, has issued the following update:
"Many of you might be in the 'know' but for those of you who are unaware CYNIC has been booked for the Wacken [Open Air] festival in Germany this August. We will be filling in a few more dates around this for a small first run. We anticipate a full world tour to coincide with the release of the new CD this fall. Plans include Western Europe, USA and South America. Hopefully we can get to Japan!"
"For those of you who are interested in AEON SPOKE [Sean's other band, also featuring CYNIC's Paul Masvidal on guitar/vocals], we are currently writing/recording new material for a second release sometime in 2009. The current CD is availible for download as well as a T-shirt for purchase under the 'messages' tab on the website (www.aeonspoke.com)." More...
Wrong Cynic Booked For Wacken Open Air
Drummer Tim Batkin of the reactivated NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) outfit CYNIC (not to be confused with the reunited progressive metallers CYNIC, whose 1993 album "Focus" is regarded as a landmark release in the field of technical/progressive metal) has released the following statement via the HellrideMusic.com forum:
"The German people have an enviable and just reputation for thoroughness and attention to detail, so it is very disappointing to report that during negotiations for CYNIC (UK) to play at Wacken [Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany] (including telephone conversations to and from England), that whilst they booked and promoted a British heavy metal band from Worcester, England, they (Thomas from Wacken Open Air) believed he had entered into contract with a thrash metal band from the U.S. Dear Thomas (ever the promoter professional), when he realised his error (well, in fact, he sent our team a link to Wikipedia of CYNIC U.S. and asked if that was us), and when receiving the negative response, binned us from the show.
"So, sorry, guys, we won't be playing. If anyone could suggest another venue, we would be all ears to come and play. In the meantime, and putting this distraction behind us, we will crack on with the album and get it out to you."

The three new tracks are entitled “Integral Birth,” “Evolutionary Sleeper,” and “Adam’s Murmur,” but Masvidal and Reinert have already written a full album’s worth of new material and the band will use the demo to begin talks with record companies about a 2008 release. Cynic Announce New Touring Guitarist
The reunited CYNIC, whose 1993 album "Focus" is regarded as a landmark release in the field of technical/progressive metal, has announced the addition of Los Angeles native, multi-instrumentalist David "Mavis" Senescu, as the touring guitar player for the band's upcoming shows.
CYNIC's Paul Masvidal (guitar, vocals) first met Mavis while touring as a member of DEATH in support of the classic "Human" album. Paul states, "I gave Mavis my last CYNIC demo at a Whisky show in L.A. The fact that I gave him my last demo copy on tour with DEATH means there was a connection for me and fully explains why we're working with him now. I must have known on some level. Mavis is precise and focused, which is exactly what CYNIC needs."
Mavis is the son of legendary jazz trumpeter Bob Senescu, who was a touring member of the BUDDY RICH BIG BAND. He has also toured with the BEACH BOYS, among others. He was raised listening to Los Angeles' finest studio musicians at work. More...
Cynic Cancels Maryland Deathfest Appearance
Cynic has apparently backed out of their previous announced performance slated for this year's Maryland Deathfest. Here's a statement from festival organizers:
"The rumours going around about Cynic cancelling their appearance at Maryland Deathfest are true. As the organisers of the event, we will state everything that happened as accurately and as truthfully as possibly. All of the necessary steps to confirm Cynic through their agency were taken by us and they were confirmed on November 21, 2006 as the band agreed on our original offer. We were given a definite green light to announce Cynic on the MDF website also in November and all parties involved have known about the scheduled appearance of Cynic at the festival for 4 months.
Between December and March there were numerous attemps from our side to contact both the band directly as well as their agency, but each attempt resulted in absolutely no reply or further information given to us. Part of the agreement was that we would pay for the band's flights in advance, but we never even received a reply about it each time we tried contacting the band to arrange the flights. Finally we received a sign of life from Cynic's agency in March asking for us to complete some information fact sheet to help assist them in completing the contract accurately. Shortly after rumours started going around that the band will not be playing the festival as we were not the first people to be informed of such an issue. After writing both the band and agency to get some kind of explanation about what is going on, we still have not received a legit reason and the band didn't even offer a personal message to deliver to the fans who have planned to travel to the festival to see them. They simply forwarded us an e-mail from their agency that said, "unfortunately Cynic will not be playing the festival". We received a very vague answer on the phone from their agency that was simply a waste of time and the agency acted like they don't know why the band is cancelling. We don't believe that one bit, so at this point we don't even care to know the real reason that the band cancelled.
We'll leave it to the fans of Cynic to formulate their own opinion about the matter. An agreement was made by all parties 4 months ago, the green light was given to announce the band, but they suddenly cancel 2 months before the festival without a legit explanation. The lack of communication by both the band and agency is extremely frustrating for us and not how we prefer to deal with any band that performs at MDF. We aren't magicians or psychics and can only report the facts about what happened from our side. We understand that some people will be extremely frustrated by this news and you can believe us that we are just as frustrated as anyone. If you want to express your displeasure regarding this issue, please direct it to the band and not us as this has nothing to do with how we handled everything.
As a result of the cancellation, one additional band will be confirmed in the near future. It will not be a band of headlining status and we anticipate pushing up Zyklon one space to headline the second night. Stay tuned for more on that."
Brutal Truth Head To Japan
Reunited seminal grindcore / extreme metal outfit BRUTAL TRUTH will head to Japan next week to headline the “Extreme The Dojo Tour V.17.” This tour follows the band’s recent successful U.K. headlining run and will kick off on Monday, March 5th in Osaka, Japan with support from Poland’s VADER.
BRUTAL TRUTH will also be performing a select number of U.S. tour dates as headliners at both the Los Angeles Murderfest and Maryland Deathfest. The LA Murderfest will take place the weekend of March 25th and 26th and also includes ATHEIST, REPULSION, OBITUARY and more. The Maryland Deathfest will occur the weekend of May 26th and 27th and includes appearances from CYNIC, REGURGITATE, ORIGIN, F*CK THE FACTS, and others. A complete listing of tour dates and festival information can be found in the tour section.
BRUTAL TRUTH has recently seen the reissue of their heralded 1997 masterpiece Sounds of the Animal Kingdom. The re-mastered and repackaged version comes complete with the preceding Kill Trend Suicide mini-CD (1996), bonus video footage in the form of the band’s 'Dead Smart' video, extensive and exhaustive liner notes from the band, and a forward from Choosing Death author Albert Mudrian.
Cynic Secures New Touring Guitarist
The reunited CYNIC, whose 1993 album "Focus" is regarded as a landmark release in the field of technical/progressive metal, has abandoned plans to utilize the services of AGHORA's Santiago Dobles for its upcoming tour. According to the band, "due to the commitment required for the reunion, it was mutually agreed that another guitar player would be better suited." A new guitarist has already been found and will be announced in the next couple of weeks. The rest of the group's lineup will consist of Paul Masvidal (vocals, guitar), Sean Reinert (drums, keys), Tony Teegarden (vocals, keyboards) and Chris Kringel (bass).
Kringel, who replaces Sean Malone (who can't participate in the reunion because of teaching and work commitments) in CYNIC's reunion lineup, has been involved with the band since the pre-"Focus" days and toured with the band in Europe in support of the CD. He also played bass on the classic and much-sought-after PORTAL demos and toured the U.K. with Paul and Sean's AEON SPOKE project. Teegarden also previously toured with CYNIC in support of "Focus".
