New Guns N Roses Album Reaches Number 2 In U.K.

Billboard has issued the following report from London's Paul Sexton:

In an all-new top three on the UK album chart, THE KILLERS' Day & Age (Vertigo/Universal) took the #1 spot ahead of GUNS N' ROSES' Chinese Democracy (Black Frog/Geffen), while TAKE THAT scored its 11th UK career #1 single with 'Greatest Day' (Polydor/Universal).

The Killers thus complete a perfect trio of studio albums: Hot Fuss was released in June 2004 and spent two weeks at the summit the following January, while Sam's Town spent three weeks at the top in October 2006. Welsh-born 2007 X Factor runner-up RHYDIAN arrived at #3 with a self-titled debut set for Syco Music/Sony BMG.

Guns N' Roses Lawyer Blasts Dr Pepper

Billboard.com reports: The lawyer for Guns N' Roses and Axl Rose has castigated Dr Pepper, accusing the soda maker of failing to deliver on its promotion to offer free soda in celebration of the band's new album, "Chinese Democracy." Guns N' Roses was never involved in the campaign.

Beverly Hills-based Alan Gutman has written to Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. president and CEO Larry Young, accusing the company of operating an online redemption scheme that was an "unmitigated disaster which defrauded customers." Gutman is demanding that Dr Pepper makes good on its offer by extending the period for the offer; he also wants full-page apologies in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and the Wall Street Journal.

Gutman's letter makes clear his view that the original campaign was an "exploitation of my clients' legendary reputation and their eagerly awaited album" and "brazenly violated our clients' rights." He is also seeking an "appropriate payment ... for the unauthorized use and abuse of their publicity and intellectual property rights," with the threat of further action if an acceptable offer is not made.

Chinese Government Speaks On Guns N Roses Album

A Chinese newspaper entitled, "The Global Times," which is run by the ruling Communist party has run an article expressing disgust with Guns N Roses for the title track of their new album, "Chinese Democracy." In an article Monday headlined "American band releases album venomously attacking China," the Global Times said unidentified Chinese Internet users had described the album as part of a plot by some in the West to "grasp and control the world using democracy as a pawn."

The album "turns its spear point on China," the article said.

China's Foreign Ministry did not respond to faxed questions about the article, although a spokesman speaking on routine condition of anonymity said: "We don't need to comment on that." More...
