Self-proclaimed leaders of the "new wave of American heavy metal", Chimaira was formed in Cleveland in 1998, recording the indie This Present Darkness album in 2000 before earning a contract with Roadrunner Records for their next two releases.

Chimaira was spawned in 1998 by Jason Hager, the guitarist of the now defunct, Ascension. Hager's desire to start an intense new metal band led him to Mark Hunter, previously of Cleveland's Skipline. Mark's vocal strengths and abilities as a songwriter made him an easy choice. After a great deal of trial and error the Chimaira family came to be what it is today: Mark Hunter (vocals), Rob Arnold and Jason Hager (guitarists) (recently left band and replaced by Matt Devries), Andols Herrick (drummer), Jim LaMarca (bass), and Chris Spicuzza (electronics).

This Cleveland six piece's unrelenting attitude and drive to succeed has helped them sell close to 10,000 copies of their independently released EP, This Present Darkness. Chimaira developed their fan base through touring, the Internet and radio- particularly stations 93X(Minneapolis) and WSOU (NY/NJ). Last year Chimaira shared the stage with the likes of Soulfly, Hatebreed, Spineshank, and Snapcase.

In March 2001 the band joined forces with the illustrious producer Mudrock (Godsmack, Powerman 5000) to put together the 14 fiercely emotional tracks that are showcased on PASS OUT OF EXISTENCE - the band's Roadrunner debut album.

Chimaira has finished recording, mixing, and mastering of "The Infection," which is set for an April 21, 2009 release via Ferret Music. Here's the update from the band:

"We have wrapped up the recording for The Infection.

"Sonically this album sounds amazing. Ben, Zeuss and Ted did an amazing job making our vision come to reality. The album has exceeded everyone in this bands expectations. Now we all get to play the game “hurry up and wait” as we won’t be posting a new track for a little bit because our record labels (yes i said labels) need to listen to the album and hear the songs before you guys. I trust you understand after all they did pay for us to record them it’s only fair they get first dibs."

Demonoid Issues Update

DEMONOID, the Swedish old-school death/thrash metal project featuring ex-THERION members Kristian Niemann (guitar) and Johan Niemann (bass) along with former SOILWORK / CHIMAIRA drummer Richard Evensand, and DARK FUNERAL's Caligula on vocals offers the following update:

"Updates have been few and far between the last couple of months and recording has been on hold because well....life sort of got in the way. The family moved in November and it took just about two months to get everything sorted and up and running again. I also had to start earning more money; meaning working more; meaning more time spent with guitar students and less on the new record. Not exactly what I had planned but you gotta do what you gotta do." More...

Chimaira Reveals New Album Title

Chimaira has posted a crypyic message on their website that can only be taken as the new album title and release date. Presumably then, the followup to the band's previous album, "Resurrection," will be titled "The Infection" and is set for an April 21, 2009 release.

Chimaira should be nearly done recording their new album. They entered the studio back in October with Ben Schigel at the helm, to begin (then pre-production) recording the new album.

Chimaira Starts Mixing New Album

Mixing has begun on Chimaira's followup to "Ressurrection." Here's an update straight from the band:

"We are now in the mixing stage of the recording process!

"For those of you unfamiliar with what that means, it’s when you take all of the things recorded and put it together and make it sound right. You are hearing the song how it should sound on the album for the first time, so obviously it’s exciting…unless the mix sucks.

"Zeuss started earlier this week and sent us the first 2 songs he completed. We couldn’t be happier with our choice. This mix far from sucks. The low end on this record is gigantic! I highly suggest everyone goes out and buys subs so they can truly feel this record.

"We really wanted to beef up our sound all around and it’s great to hear it all come together and sound how we visioned it back in June when we started writing.

"Mr. Spicuzza is still working hard on the last couple songs while the rest of us are unwinding from the recording process. That doesn’t mean Chimaira is not on our minds. Since Monday we’ve been listening to all of the songs while trying to come up with the tracklisting for the album. We really want it to feel good from start to finish and it’s something that takes time. We listen to the songs in all sorts of different orders and see what feels best. We have the bookends (opening and closing track) all set, now we just need to put the rest of it together."

Chimaira's Mark Hunter Laying Down Vocal Tracks

Chimaira vocalist Mark Hunter has posted and update to the band's site about the writing process and his experience laying down vocals this weekend. Here's what he posted:

"Hey everyone. I hope our friends in the US and A had a good holiday. I spent the night tracking. I am a little behind schedule but there is good reason. I haven't really spoken much about the lyrics and songs and themes for this record so I figured I'd let you in on a couple things.

"I intentionally came into the studio without one lyric or vocal idea. The majority of the songs written for this record were written on the fly by us jamming in the bus. Two hours later we had a song. After touring we continued that spontaneous style of writing and it was an amazing feeling feeding off of each others ideas and just seeing where the riffs would take us. I feel this is Chimaira in it's purest and most vulnerable form.

"I felt that I wanted to harness that same raw talent on the microphone as well. I basically freestlye over a song, find patterns I like or words I might say and then build from there. I construct the lyrics and then go in to track it. After that I sit on it for a day, and then come back and fix things here and there.

"I've done this method in the past with songs like Power Trip, Severed, Paralyzed, Down Again, Pure Hatred, etc.. so it's not a new thing for me. But to do an entire record like this, that's a first.

"I have four songs left at this point and I wish I had more. This is the most fun I've had doing vocals for a record ever.

"I also wanted to talk about how cool Chris' samples are coming out. He is taking these songs to another level. He has always been able to do that with our songs, but this time around he is really prominent and some of his parts carry parts of the song rather than just adding a layer. We even have one song where it's just him and I for a couple of parts. It's definitely different and exciting."

Chimaira Gives Another Update, Filming DVD Footage

Chimaira has issued yet another update from the studio sessions of recording their followup to "Ressurrection." Here's the update from vocalist Mark Hunter:

"We have been working in shifts to get this record done. Jim starts in the morning, Rob and Matt (when he’s not off at regional sporting events) track mid afternoon-early evening and then I have been coming in to do vocals around 8pm. We are about 40% done tracking right now. Chris and I still have a lot of work left but we are confident we’ll finish it this year…haha hopefully by the middle of next month.

"We got a new camera and are having a bit of difficulty logging some of the footage so be patient on the webisode front. Todd “dead-eye” Bell has returned to do some more filming so he should be able to help the problem.

"Oh yeah, we have been filming for a dvd to come with the new record.

"Time to battle the arctic wasteland that used to be Cleveland and hit the studio, write more soon."

Chris Spicuzza (keyboards and effects) added in another update:

"I moved into the studio last Monday. Things are moving at a slow pace. It’s taking me about 2-3 days per song. I have one full song done and about 3 other songs at about 60% complete."

Chimaira Issues Another Recording Update

Chimaira has posted the following update on the recording of their followup to their latest album, "Ressurection":

"So we are moving pretty fast. Rob and Matt only have 2 songs left to track on guitar, 1 song will be particularly irksome for them i’m sure. Jim and Chris each have about 4 done and i have 2 completed.

"Expect a webisode this weekend along with more updates.

"Other than that i have been busy working on all of the packaging ideas for the release. even though it’s not until April, everything has to be planned now to ensure it all comes out on time."

Chimaira Issues Recording Update

Chimaira guitarist Robb Arnold has issued the following recording update:

"Things are going well here at the ol’ studio. Today I finished working on the fifth of fourteen songs we’re recording, and Matt is working on number six right now. My opinion on how things are sounding is….”HUGE”. You really never fully understand how technically demanding a riff is until you try to lay it down for good. A lot of this stuff is hard man- but totally catchy at the same time. I think it was Mr. Eddie Van Halen who once said, “Man I wish we could tour first, and then record the record”! And thats because after you’ve been on the road month after month, playing the songs over and over again, you’re always much better at them individually, and as a band, then you are when you record them. But oh well… we’re trying our best here, and I think everyone is going to appreciate it come April."
