Self-proclaimed leaders of the "new wave of American heavy metal", Chimaira was formed in Cleveland in 1998, recording the indie This Present Darkness album in 2000 before earning a contract with Roadrunner Records for their next two releases.

Chimaira was spawned in 1998 by Jason Hager, the guitarist of the now defunct, Ascension. Hager's desire to start an intense new metal band led him to Mark Hunter, previously of Cleveland's Skipline. Mark's vocal strengths and abilities as a songwriter made him an easy choice. After a great deal of trial and error the Chimaira family came to be what it is today: Mark Hunter (vocals), Rob Arnold and Jason Hager (guitarists) (recently left band and replaced by Matt Devries), Andols Herrick (drummer), Jim LaMarca (bass), and Chris Spicuzza (electronics).

This Cleveland six piece's unrelenting attitude and drive to succeed has helped them sell close to 10,000 copies of their independently released EP, This Present Darkness. Chimaira developed their fan base through touring, the Internet and radio- particularly stations 93X(Minneapolis) and WSOU (NY/NJ). Last year Chimaira shared the stage with the likes of Soulfly, Hatebreed, Spineshank, and Snapcase.

In March 2001 the band joined forces with the illustrious producer Mudrock (Godsmack, Powerman 5000) to put together the 14 fiercely emotional tracks that are showcased on PASS OUT OF EXISTENCE - the band's Roadrunner debut album.

The Music as a Weapon 4 Tour is not just a couple of bands tagging along with Disturbed for a romp around the states. It is an all day festival of skin art, extreme sports, and music in addition to the headliner bands that draw the crowds in the first place. It all sounded wonderful to me when I bought my tickets. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way. More...

Crooked X Added To Music As A Weapon Tour

Oklahoma's hard rock quartet, Crooked X will play on the second stage at Disturbed's Music As A Weapon IV Tour-a music, tattoo, and lifestyle festival-presented by Samsung Mobile and powered by Sprint. Crooked X will rock The Ernie Ball Second Stage, which will be officially sponsored by multi-city battle of the bands organization Headbang For the Highway, a 38-city, nine-week trek, which kicks off March 20th in Madison, WI. "I would go to this show even if we weren't playing. These are some of our favorite bands. What a great opportunity," says Jesse Cooper, lead guitarist. "I'm so stoked to go on the Music As A Weapon Tour. I'm excited to see Killswitch Engage and Suicide Silence. It's gonna be an experience for sure," adds Forrest French, lead vocals.

Recently, the 15-year-old shredders appeared on their own mini MTV rockumentary, "Rock N Roll Dream," which documented their real-life Cinderella story about four young boys catapulting from a Coweta, OK (population 7,000) garage band to opening for KISS in front of 35,000 screaming fans in Stockholm, Sweden. These events led to CX signing with EMI via McGhee Proffer Media (MPM) in August of 2008, all this within the span of nine months.

Their self-titled 10-song debut for EMI (in stores now), was helmed by hit producers Spencer Proffer (Tina Turner, Quiet Riot, WASP) and Michael Wagener (Metallica, Ozzy, Poison). Standout tracks on the new album include "Gone," "Time Is Now," "You Gotta Bleed," and "Adrenaline." The track "Nightmare," was featured in the successful Rock Band video game while "Gone" and "Rock N Roll Dream" are available as downloadable content for the game. The success of their debut landed them their first national late night TV appearance on ABC's JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE, where they showcased new single "Gone" in addition to fan favorite "Rock N Roll Dream." Chimaira Vocalist Talks About "The Infection"

CHIMAIRA vocalist Mark Hunter recently spoke with MetalSucks about the band's new album "The Infection," set to be released April 21st via Ferret Music. Hunter spoke about the meaning of the album title, what the music sounds like and how it's different from the band's past material, the viral campaign surrounding the new website spread-the-infection.com, the band's morale, and a slew of other topics. An excerpt from the interview follows:

MetalSucks: Your new album is called The Infection. Who or what is infected?

Hunter: The title has a couple of meanings. Globally, we feel the album is very catchy and "infectious." Personally, it reflects a period in my life where I felt I was "infected" with way too much negativity. Yes, even I have my limits. Lastly, it's a great name to do fun marketing things with. We can have fun with our fans anticipating the release. We are just as excited as they are, that's for sure.

MetalSucks: Whereas with some bands you could take pretty much any ten songs from their discography and shuffle them around, each Chimaira album seems distinct from the last; while it always sounds like Chimaira, there's a very tangible evolution in sound from record to record, so that, say, a song from the self-titled album would seem completely out of place on The Impossibility of Reason. Do you feel like this evolution has continued on The Infection? And, if so, how?

Hunter: Without question this album is a departure from Resurrection. Certain bands have a way of putting out albums that are very familiar sounding to their previous. It's like hip-hop, you know what you are going to get. That's fine, and there is nothing wrong with that. We are not one of those bands. We like to raise the bar and challenge ourselves to think outside of the box all the time. We've never been limited as to where we draw influence from. We are six guys who have way different musical tastes and Chimaira's sound is a derivative of that.

I guess noticeable differences on this album would be the tempo. Without giving too much away, we have slowed down a bit. There are moments on this album that are speedy blast beat fun, but there are also moments where it's so slow you feel like you are drowning in quicksand and LaMarca is sitting on top of you. Now THAT's heavy.

MetalSucks: Has this musical evolution over the years been deliberate? Do you guys approach each album with a distinct vision - e.g., "This time we wanna make really long songs," "This time we want the music to be a little more melodic," whatever?

Hunter: Besides the obvious of trying to top our previous efforts, we don't really approach our albums with any specific goal. I can't imagine being in a band where dudes walk in and go "hey man, let's make our heaviest, yet most melodic album to date." That mentality is about as stale as the artists that say it. We don't know what is going to come out until it's done. Plain and simple.

MetalSucks: After working with Jason Suecof on Resurrection, why did the band decide to reunite with producer Ben Schigel for this album?

Hunter: It started with me watching our DVD, The Dehumanizing Process. I got nostalgic and wanted to work with him again. I brought up the idea of working with him again and no one disagreed. He knows the band so well and has been recording us in various bands for half of our lives. It was good to break away and gain new experience working with Jason Suecof, but, home is where the heart is I guess.
