2023 Sabertooth Part 2

Sabertooth Portland 2023 – Part 2 (of 3)

Part 1 can be found here.

sabertooth rhododendron ezra chong

Back to the Crystal Ballroom stage for Rhododendron—a band I hadn’t heard of. My first thought was, “Why are these three kids playing on the big stage with proper lighting, ventilation, etc. when I just had to see Cloak on the tiny, hot stage in the dark and packed Lola’s Room?”

rhododendron gage walker noah mortola

After listening a bit, I softened my disdain. They were good and have a very promising future. But still, shouldn’t Cloak and Rhododendron have been switched?

I headed down the stairs for Year of the Cobra, a band I could swear I’ve seen before, but I can’t remember where or when. I thought I had at least 10 minutes to spare, but they had already begun playing. From this point on, I think every band started before the advertised start times. Did they get changed and the website wasn’t updated? I don’t know.

Sabertooth Year of the Cobra

Year of the Cobra is a wonderful two-piece band. Their set was intense, beautiful, and Amy’s shout out to the metal women in the audience (including Grayceon’s Jackie Perez Gratz) was the first time that the higher female percentage of this festival (that I mentioned in Part 1) hit me.

Sabertooth Will Billy Kyle

Portland funeral doom band Will was up next. Funeral doom can be enjoyable live with the proper intoxicants, but it can also bore me—especially when not in a live setting. The second half of a couple of Will’s songs were quite good—when the pace picked up and/or soloing occurred.

Will has been doing their thing, mostly opening for touring bands in Portland, for a while now, but I don’t think they have any albums. Again, I’m still asking the question why Cloak and Ghost Bath weren’t swapped on the bill with Rhododendron and Will?

Speaking of Ghost Bath, they were the final act in Lola’s Room. The place was packed and hotter than ever by this point in the evening. Ghost Bath only got through a couple of songs before the power went off. Rather than endure the heat and masses in the hopes that power to the instruments be restored, I retreated to the much cooler Crystal Ballroom for a rest and wait for the final three artists—UADA, Ludicra, and YOB.

Ghost Bath Debuts "Convince Me To Bleed" Video

Recently, atmospheric black metallers Ghost Bath announced their fourth full-length album, "Self Loather" will be released on October 29th via Nuclear Blast Records. On the album, the band closes out the trilogy—tragedy, ecstasy, and dread/hatred—and hosts their most devastating and dark music to date. Today, the band releases the music video for "Convince Me to Bleed." Watch the video that was edited and directed by Austin Scherzberg as well as written and co-directed by John Olivier below.

Ghost Bath's fourth full-length sets the mood meter to desolation/antipathy—and never quite let's go. Produced by the band with Xander Moser engineering at Tree Speak Recording Studio in Minneapolis and mixed by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Bosse-De-Nage) at The Atomic Garden Recording Studios in Oakland, Self Loather is a sonic exercise in shadow, nuance, and, most of all, power. The band enlisted Zdzislaw Beksinski to create the cover artwork which was licensed through the Muzeum Historyczne w Sanoku.

Below is the "Self Loather" tracklist:

1. Convince Me to Bleed
2. Hide from the Sun (feat. CJ McMahon of Thy Art Is Murder)
3. Shrines of Bone
4. Sanguine Mask
5. Crystal Lattice
6. Sinew and Vein (feat. Graf of Psychonaut 4)
7. I hope death finds me well
8. For it is a Veil
9. Unbearable
10. Flickering Wicks of Black More...

Ghost Bath Unveils "Starmourner" Details

Ghost Bath is pleased to announce the release of "Starmourner" on April 21st via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. As a precursor to its release, the band has unveiled the first single from the record, entitled "Thrones." Listen in below.

Since its inception, Ghost Bath has played atmospheric black metal focused on depression, tragedy, purgatory, and earthly wonders. "Starmourner" takes these concepts to a higher level. It explores joy (instead of sorrow), paradise (instead of purgatory), and the cosmos (instead of earth). Most importantly however, it explores ecstasy -- instead of tragedy -- as its basic human emotion.

Each track is accompanied by a beautifully crafted painting as well as a parable to read alongside. This allows the listener to explore not only the audio soundscapes, but a visual and imaginative experience through as they delve into the album.

"The stories, or parables, look into Jewish angelology and the hierarchy of angels as found in the Bible and other religious texts," says vocalist/ mastermind Nameless. "Although the album has a definitive joyful and hopeful feel, it is still drenched in depression and sorrow, as any true Ghost Bath record should be."

The album was recorded, mixed, mastered and produced by Josh Schroeder (Battlecross, Still Remains) and features cover artwork Luciana Nedelea (Enbilulugugal, Foehammer). The track listing is as follows: More...

Ghost Bath Issues New Single "Thrones"

Depressive black metal act Ghost Bath released a lyric video for the new song "Thrones." The song will appear on the new album "Starmourner" coming April 21st via Nuclear Blast Records. Pre-orders can be made at this location.

Vocalist and mastermind Nameless, recently released the following statement regarding Starmourner's musical direction: "'Starmourner,' the brand new album, takes these concepts to a higher level. It explores joy (instead of sorrow), the cosmos (instead of earth), and paradise (instead of purgatory.) But most importantly, it explores ecstasy -instead of tragedy- as its basic human emotion."

With over 72 minutes of heavy, melodic, and dramatic black metal, it is Ghost Bath's most ambitious undertaking yet. The album takes its listener on a journey in a variety of ways; Each track is accompanied by a beautifully crafted painting as well as a "parable" to read alongside. This allows the listener to explore not only the audio soundscapes, but a visual and imaginative experience through as they delve into the album.

"The stories, or parables, look into Jewish angelology and the hierarchy of angels as found in the bible and other religious texts," says Nameless. Although the album has a definitive joyful and hopeful feel, it is still drenched in depression and sorry, as any true Ghost Bath record should be."

Ghost Bath Enters The Studio

The depressive black metal merchants from Ghost Bath have entered the recording studio once again with producer Josh Schroeder, to record the follow-up to "Moonlover." Vocalist and mastermind Nameless has released the following statement regarding the as-of-yet-untitled-album's musical direction:

"My own description of my approach for this album is better described in a quote I read recently in Herman Melville's Moby Dick:

To enjoy bodily warmth, some small part of you must be cold, for there is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing exists in itself. If you flatter yourself that you are all over comfortable, and have been so a long time, then you cannot be said to be comfortable any more. For this reason a sleeping apartment should never be furnished with a fire, which is one of the luxurious discomforts of the rich. For the height of this sort of deliciousness is to have nothing but the blanket between you and your snugness and the cold of the outer air. Then there you lie like the one warm spark in the heart of an arctic crystal.

"Contrast is what creates stronger feeling and emotion in this album. A joyful ecstatic experience will further the potency of depression, drenched in the surrealism of the cosmos and afterlife."

A late spring 2017 release is tentatively expected via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. More details are due to be revealed shortly.

Ghost Bath Posts "Happyhouse" Video

The depressive black metal merchants from Ghost have released a dismal and disturbing music video for the track "Happyhouse." The clip was directed by Jesse Lynch and the song comes from the band's latest record, "Moonlover."

"This video encompasses true despair and melancholy in a variety of ways," comments vocalist Nameless. "'Happyhouse' is the track most resembling classic DSBM on the album. It is stripped down and minimalist and so we created something fitting and dreary for the music video."
