As a kid, Fieldy spent much of his adolescence "standing around in dirt fields, drinking beer, watching other kids fight." At some point, Fieldy and some friends decided their time would be better spent taking out their frustrations on musical instruments instead. And rock music would never be the same.

So Fieldy, James "Munky" Shaffer, David Silveria, Brian "Head" Wetch, and eventually, an assistant coroner with a troubled past named Jonathan Davis left Bakersfield for Los Angeles and collectively became known as Korn. It helped that they all had common influneces - the angry, urban stylings of hip-hip, the heavy, riff-driven angst of metal. But the sounds emanating from this band's Huntington Beach rehearsal space would soon set an entirely fresh musical precedent and set off a wave of imitators that eventually threatened to engulf the band itself.

After touring for nearly two years, Korn was signed by Immortal and released their now-classic eponymous 1994 debut. Korn opened with the prophetic, gravel-throated challenge "Are you ready?!" before kicking into the heaviest guitar sound yet heard in rock, thanks to the team of Shaffer and Welch, who tuned their already-low 7-string guitars even lower and played with no regard for the traditional harmonic consonance. The sound was metallica sludge, but tempered oddly by bassist Fieldy and drummer Silveria, who added a mix of porn-soundtrack funk and hip-hop rhythms tha was puzzlingly aggressive and chill. Next, nursery rhyme-like melodies were woven into the dark mix, helping make Korn the creepiest, heaviest debut since Black Sabbath. But Davis had no desire to sing about devils and witches; he was busy exorcising real-life demons. Songs such as "Faget" and "Shoots and Ladders" were discomfortingly personal confessions of shattered childhood, and by album's end Davis was literally in tears in the harrowing "Daddy."

And so they began to amass a following that would send their next album, 1996's brutal yet cheekily titled "Life is Peachy," into platinum sales. Years of touring followed again as the band fortified its fan-base to the degree that their next album, 1998's "Follow the Leader," would debut at No. 1 on the Billboard's Top 200, as would "Issues."

Brian "Head" Welch Responds To Video Controversy

Former Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch has responded to the controversy surrounding his latest solo video for "Flush" as well as reports that some stores are pulling his CD of their shelves in reaction to this video. Here's Welch's statement on the matter:

"I have received a handful of messages from some conservative people complaining about the sex and drug references in my new music video for FLUSH; and, I have recently learned that some select retailers are pulling my CD from their shelves because of my music video's content. So, I wanted to give an explanation of what the video means to me; and to address those select retailers that are pulling the CD from their shelves:

"The video for FLUSH is about Crystal Meth addiction and the crazy things anyone addicted to Meth will do while they're high or to get their fix. Everything the models were doing in the video is what I was wrapped up in while I was addicted to Meth. The video is a very realistic look at the addiction and where it will lead you if you get hooked. I understand the images of the models may be too much for some people, but honestly, I was just trying to be real with what happened in my life and show where I was, as well as where I am at now. Korn To Go On Extended Break

Korn has announced that they will be taking an extended break and will not begin writing their new album until next year. Frontman Jonathan Davis has assured Korn fans that they will not have to worry about the band splitting up or being away for too long.

Jonathan Davis states: "We've been going fifteen years and we need to just chill out for awhile. And you know me, I got to keep playing, I got to keep writing music so I don't go crazy, so I decided it would be a perfect time to do this. It's not like a hiatus or anything, we're still all good, it's just when everybody's ready, we'll get back together and go do it. We just need to recharge our batteries and get hungry again."

Ozzfest 2008 Deemed A Success By Organizers

Billboard.com reports: Ozzfest 2008, with Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne as headliners, grossed nearly $3.5 million and drew close to 30,000 people to Dallas' Pizza Hut Park, according to producers Sharon Osbourne and AEG Live.

Sponsored by Affliction Clothing, this year's Ozzfest marked the return of the 13-year-old hard music brand after a free run at amphitheaters last year. This year's one-off event did "fantastically well," Sharon Osbourne told Billboard.com. "The one thing is you want for the kids to go away and keep talking about what a great show it was, and that's what they're doing."

In addition to Metallica and Osbourne, mainstage acts were Serj Tankian, Hellyeah, Johnathan Davis, Cavalera Conspiracy, Shadows Fall, Apocalyptica, and In This Moment. The second stage featured Sevendust, Devildriver, Kingdom of Sorrow, Soilent Green, Witchcraft and Goatwhore. On the third stage were the Sword, Drowning Pool, Rigor Mortis, Within Chaos, The Destro and "battle of the bands" winners Debris and Black Tooth.

Osbourne says plans are for Ozzfest to return to Dallas again next summer, likely as a two-day festival, and other cities are also being considered. "Ozzfest ain't going anywhere," she says. "We do try and shake things up and experiment. We're not the old donkey that plods on doing the same sh*t."

Mudvayne, Korn Being Sued By Injured Fan

Korn, Mudvayne, Clear Channel Broadcasting and national concert promoter Live Nation have been named in a lawsuit filed earlier this year in Denver District Court by a 27-year-old waitress who was injured during a concert that took place March 8, 2006.

The woman claims several rowdy concertgoers knocked her to the ground and trampled her as they made their way toward the stage. The University of Denver, which was the site for the KBPI-FM "Birthday Bash" concert, is also named as a defendant in the suit.

According to a Rocky Mountain News report, the show was Nicole LaScalia's first concert experience. She ended up leaving the event in an ambulance after one of her legs was crushed by the weight of the crowd. She is seeking unspecified damages, and her case is likely to proceed slowly, to allow time for the numerous parties involved to respond to its claims.

The report says LaScalia underwent surgery to fix a fractured tibia and fibula, as well as her badly injured ankle. She has accrued about $60,000 in medical bills, and the suit will seek damages for "severe pain and suffering."

According to the suit, LaScalia fell to the ground when several fans surged toward the stage just as Mudvayne began their performance. "Something like this is reasonably foreseeable," LaScalia's lawyer, Darrell Elliott, told the paper. "There has to be sufficient supervision if you have festival seating to protect patrons. In this case, it didn't happen. Oversight was lacking."

Meanwhile, Clear Channel has responded to the suit, calling the victim's claims "frivolous and groundless." The company blamed the injuries on either her negligence or the actions of those in the crowd.

At press time, Elliott and representatives for Mudvayne had not responded to MTV News' requests for comment. In a statement, Korn's management said: "Although we can verify that Korn was not onstage during the alleged incident, we cannot comment further on the suit as it is a legal matter."

Ex-Korn Guitarist Announces Album Release Date

Former Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch has announced that his debut solo album "Save Me From Myself" will be released on September 9th. The albums first single, entitled "Flush", will be available on iTunes on July 8th.

The album takes its name from Welch's book "Save Me From Myself: How I Found God, Quit Korn, Kicked Drugs And Lived To Tell The Story", which chronicles his famous conversion to Christianity and departure from the band. The album also contains the song "A Cheap Name" which is a lyrical attack on rapper 50 Cent. In an interview with CNN, Welch said "I'm not saying I'm better than him, I'm saying that God is telling me something and God is telling me something to tell you, I'm the translator. You can listen if you want but things are gonna happen."

Brian Welch is planning a major tour and all profits from the album will be donated to "Help Indian children get to know God."

Korn Frontman Speaks On "Head"'s Possible Return

Korn frontman Jonathan Davis was recently talking with fans on the groups official website chatroom, Korn Korner. He had this to say on former guitarist Brian "Head" Welch and drummer David Silvera:

"Head doesn't want to come back yet. I miss him sooooo fuckin' bad, but I don't think he is ready to be put back in the element he ran from. Drugs are everywere, and I think he's not ready to be around it yet. I think Fieldy can help him a lot because he's Christian too and sober and does fine. Now David, I don't know what's gonna happen there. I just think he is done with music; it not his passion anymore. It sucks, but hey, he has to be happy, right?! We are very happy with [current KORN touring drummer] Ray Luzier. Every time I see him, he's got a drum magazine or a drumstick in his hands. It pumps me and Fieldy and Munk up. So maybe one day you will see Head up there with us, I hope."

He also revealed in the chat that the next Korn album will be produced by Ross Robinson, who produced their self titled debut album and their sophomore album "Life Is Peachy", in addition to many other bands such as Soulfly and Limp Bizkit.

Ozzfest 2008 Confirmed As One-Day Event

OZZFEST--the original and iconic hard rock festival--returns in 2008 as a one-day stadium spectacular on Saturday, August 9 in Dallas, Texas that teams OZZFEST founder and namesake Ozzy Osbourne (in his only U.S. concert appearance this summer) with Metallica (marking their OZZFEST debut).

Produced by Sharon Osbourne and AEG LIVE, the all-day festival at Pizza Hut Park in hard music-loving Dallas will feature three stages of non-stop talent (with many OZZFEST alumni) and reliably twisted OZZFEST side attractions.

The full main stage lineup will also spotlight performances by Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Hellyeah, Jonathan Davis (Korn), Cavalera Conspiracy, Shadows Fall, Apocalyptica and In This Moment. Also scheduled on the main stage is a special all-star tribute to slain Pantera guitarist ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott. Second stage acts include Sevendust, Devildriver, Kingdom of Sorrow, Soilent Green, Witchcraft and Goatwhore. The Texas (third) stage—“an homage to the “many great metal bands that come from Texas,” says Sharon Osbourne--features The Sword, Drowning Pool and Rigor Mortis.

“Ozzy just finished an 11-month world tour so I think he deserves a summer off,” Sharon says about this year’s one-day OZZFEST. “We’re going to be a stadium destination festival for now--we have gone past doing the sheds every summer. We’ve given everyone else the blueprint and we have to keep evolving OZZFEST. This is just the beginning; AEG Live and I have a lot of new ideas for OZZFEST."

This year’s dynamic line-up encompasses artists who’ve played OZZFEST before in different incarnations such as Serj Tankian (System of a Down); Jonathan Davis (Korn); Hellyeah’s Vinnie Paul (Pantera) and Chad Gray (Mudvayne); Kingdom of Sorrow’s Jamie Jasta (Hatebreed) and Kirk Windstein (Down); and Max Cavalera (Soulfly, Sepultura) of Cavalara Conspiracy. Other OZZFEST graduates include Shadows Fall, Sevendust, Devildriver, Drowning Pool and In This Moment.

“Ozzy has great relationships with all of the bands that have played OZZFEST,” says Sharon. “We’re the only real festival for harder edge bands and these artists have been very loyal to us--there is lots of love on this line-up."
