2013 Metal Grammy Nominees Revealed

The 2013 Grammy nominees in the "Best Metal Performance" category have now been revealed, and are as follows:

"T.N.T." - Anthrax
"God Is Dead?" - Black Sabbath
"The Enemy Inside" - Dream Theater
"In Due Time" - Killswitch Engage
"Room 24" - Volbeat Featuring King Diamond

As usual, there's nothing on the extreme side to be found, but at least actual metal bands have made the list. Anyone want to bet which performance wins?

Keep in mind, last year Halestorm somehow won best metal performance in a lineup that featured Lamb of God, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden, so it seems likely voting for the most rock-focused and least metallic band may be the way to go.

And when you're done with that, let us know what the REAL best metal performance of 2013 should have been - Grammy's be damned!

Aftershock Festival Hosting Battle Of The Bands

The first annual Ernie Ball Aftershock Battle Of The Bands will be held from August 12th -September 6th, 2013. Bands can enter the competition--and fans can vote for their favorite band--at this location.

The grand prize winner of this unsigned band competition will have the opportunity to perform on the Ernie Ball Stage on Sunday, September 15th at Monster Energy’s Aftershock Festival held September 14th and 15th at Discovery Park near downtown Sacramento, CA.

The top 100 “Buzz Rated” bands that sign up for the Ernie Ball Aftershock Battle Of The Bands will be eligible to win. A panel of judges will choose the winner of this global search for the best undiscovered rock band. The winning band will be announced on Monday, September 9th, 2013.

Ernie Ball will provide the winning band with an all-expense paid trip to the festival in Sacramento, CA and an Ernie Ball Music Man endorsement.

To enter the Monster Energy’s Aftershock Festival Ernie Ball Battle Of The Bands, bands must complete a short informational profile and upload at least one MP3 to the Battle Of The Bands website. Entrants should use the Band Promotional Toolkit provided in their profile after logging in to promote their entry on the web and drive fans to vote.

"Buzz Rating" is a proprietary system developed by Ernie Ball that gives a real time snap shot of each band's overall exposure level. The system takes into account both viral reach and real world factors that produce a 1-100 rating system giving a reading on each band's relevance within the industry. “Buzz Rating” also calculates fan votes as an overall percentage of each band’s rating. In order to boost “Buzz Rating,” bands should be sure their profile is complete with a valid link to their public Facebook profile.

Gigantour 2012: At Least The Music Was Good

It’s hardly necessary to point out why Gigantour, the recurring metal mini-festival on wheels led by Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, is such an – ahem – gigantic draw. My last time seeing the band perform was for the tour’s third incarnation in April 2008, with support from In Flames, Children Of Bodom, Job For A Cowboy, and High On Fire. Round four boasts a package at once further streamlined and brawnier in industry clout, making this show a no-brainer for any heavy music fan within reasonable driving distance. With this firmly in mind, my photographer Tanya J. Kawecki and I set out for Lowell, Massachusetts on Sunday, January 29th. Our destination: UMass Lowell’s Tsongas Center, named – in the words of my colorful colleague Matt Dasher – “for the guy who famously didn’t become President in 1992.” More...

Volbeat Parts Ways With Guitarist

Danish heavy metal/rock and roll outfit Volbeat has announced that they have parted company with guitarist Thomas Bredahl. A message from the group reads as follows:

"Volbeat has decided to part ways with Thomas Bredahl. Being in a band is in many ways similar to a marriage with ups and downs. At times you can work it out and sometimes you need to go separate ways...

"We want to thank him for the work he has put in for Volbeat and we wish him all the best in the future. Volbeat will play all shows as announced, either as a trio or with a replacement guitarist.

"Right now we’ll take a well deserved break and we will be back on the road in January, ready to rock the Gigantour and Wacken."
