Pit Stories: The Out Of Control Circle Pit

Each week we chat up metal fans and band members from every style and sub-genre to find their best tales from the mosh pit. For this week's look into the pit, guitarist Andreas Allenmark of Swedish act Cipher System shares the following story of a circle pit gone out of control:

This "accident" happened when I was on tour with another band. We were playing in Germany and had been drinking quite a few beers the night before and I had been taught a few tricks from another band.

One of those tricks was the sign for a circle pit. After a few songs I started thinking about that sign, what if I should try it...just to see if the audience understood what it meant. So I waited for a break in the song then showed them as distinctively as I could.

After that I continued my headbanging mostly looking down at the guitar and floor. When I looked up again I saw that a circle pit really had started and almost developed to a riot atmosphere, people were really hurting each other. I regretted my foolish naivety, almost stopped playing just to try to calm them down again. My last thought was, what if my brother saw me now? He is a police officer and what I had done would be considered to be a crime in Sweden.

Cipher System released the new album "Communicate the Storms" earlier this year. You can check out track-by-track videos from the band discussing the album here. For more details on Cipher System, navigate over to the band's Facebook profile.

Check back in again next Tuesday as we share more Pit Stories from metal bands.

Cipher System Posts Band Q&A Online

Sweden's Cipher System has posted the following series of fan questions and band answers online, which deal with the sound of the group and the new album "Communicate the Storms:"

"So finally...here comes all the answers of the Q&A! Sorry for the delay!

"Have you thought of making the Synth a little louder through out the song?

"Henric - that would happen if it fits the song. We are not afraid of using keys, but we are a metal band and we don't want the keys to take over as a lead instrument.

"I've got the same question about guitars, in most songs they drown in synths

"Henric - when we mix the album we experiment With the levels. We might change how we mix for the next album a bit, but we wont change sound that much.

"Have you guys also though of using extended range guitars?

"Andreas: At the moment we use 6-stringed guitars only. To be honest, I get confused when there are more strings on a guitar. Personally I think that bands who after a while starts using different tunings or 8-stringed guitars tend to change there sound totally so that is something we will never do. We like our sound as it is. More...

Cipher System Signs To Nuclear Blast

Nuclear Blast records has issued the following announcement about signing a deal with Sweden's Cipher System for the release of a new album:

"15 years after the birth of the band, Cipher System returns with what has to be described as a masterpiece in a genre where innovation has become sparse, putting their murderous machinations on public display, forged with fearsome skill and precision: 'Communicate The Storm.' Packed in the rapturous art of a true genius of darkened visuals, Seth Siro Anton (Soilwork, Paradise Lost, SepticFlesh), and with a mix once again stemming from the hallowed grounds of Studio Fredman, this colossus of an album is sure to send tremors throughout the scene when it hits the street on September, 9th 2011!"

The band also added, "When you have been in this business as long as we have, you take everything with a bit of 'this will never happen, but it would be great if it did' attitude. That is how we protect ourselves from not being broken down by all setbacks. So when we finished mixing 'Communicate The Storms' we thought we had an great album in our hands, but after 6 months of recording and around 2 years of writing it, we didn't really knew for sure. But when we got contacted by Nuclear Blast we knew that we were on to something. It's a true honor to be signed to the label that gave us 'Storm Of The Light's Bane,' 'Jester Race,' 'Enthrone Darkness Triumphant' to name a few. Nuclear Blast was our goal and dream label when we started playing in the 90's, and we have finally found our way home. We want to thank all the people, friends and fans all around the world for the support! Let's race to the top!”

Cipher System's new album “Communicate The Storm” will be released on September 9th, 2011. Additional details on the album will be announced as they are made available.

Cipher System Adds New Guitarist

Sweden's Cipher System has announced the addition of guitar player Andreas Allenmark (Anata) to their line-up. The band comments:

"We would like tho start this news with a big 'thank you' to everyone who were interested in this position. A great amount of people from the whole world (at least all continents) has sent in questions and wanted to be a part. Thanks for even caring about our shitty little meaningless band. Now, what we wanted was to have a guy that has been in the game for a while, and has his shit together musically. Also, we wanted him to live close so we can meet up without any problems. [Andreas] fits in this description perfectly, as he has been touring a lot with Anata, recording a couple of albums and lives really close by. We are more than happy to welcome him and his amazing guitar skills to the band."

Just last month, the band announced the addition of Andreas Solveström (Within Y) to their line-up as their new vocalist.
