Band Photo: Marilyn Manson (?)
From: Tampa Bay, FL, United States
Last Known Status: Active
Forming in 1989, the original Marilyn Manson line-up consisted of part-time journalist Manson (b. Brian Warner, 5 January 1969, Canton, Ohio, USA; vocals/tape loops), Daisy Berkowitz (guitar), Olivia Newton-Bundy (bass) and Zsa Zsa Speck (keyboards), later joined by Sara Lee Lucas (drums) - all the band members assuming forenames of female icons and surnames of famous murderers. Bundy and Speck were replaced at the end of 1989 by Gidget Gein and Madonna Wayne Gacy (b. Steve Bier), respectively.
The best description I think I have ever seen of Manson comes from RollingStone Magazine. It goes like this:
"Imagine Alice Cooper times 10. Picture KISS on an acid and whiskey bender. Marry the gross-out hilarity of G.G. Allin with the ubiquity of Howard Stern. Combine the "search and destroy" frenzy of Iggy Pop with the godless zeal of Ozzy Osbourne. Take two cups of the devil and throw in a pinch of P.T. Barnum, and you still can't fathom all that is...Marilyn Manson."
To me this describes the whole aura and prescence of Manson. The band has caused controversy with almost everything they have done. Manson has been sued, arrested, and banned in certain cities from playing live. They were accused of providing the thoughts that were brought out during the 'Columbine School Shootings' with one of their song's lyrics.
To fans, Manson is a God. His live shows are as heavy and exciting as any other metal tour around. During live performances Manson has been known to piss on the crowd, kill chickens, engage in sexual acts, tear the Bible, stab himself, and the list goes on.

The Graspop Metal Meeting festival, held annually in the small Belgian town of Dessel, has become one of the highlights of the metal calendar, along with such festivals as Wacken Open Air and Hellfest and this year, the event proved how successful it is by celebrating it's twentieth edition. It was certainly a special way to mark the occassion, booking a number of bands who had never played the festival before but who fans had been clamouring to see. It has always traditionally catered to head bangers of all ages, bringing in bands from the early days of metal to the stars of today, as well as up and comers. Before we go any further, it should be noted that due to scheduling conflicts, some big names either will not be covered in this review, or only mentioned briefly, so don't be disappointed if your favourite band doesn't get the treatment you want, if at all. So, with all that said, just how good can a metal festival in the Flemish region be? Read on, MacDuff.
Arriving on the Thursday, the camp site seemed to be smoother than ever to get in to than previous years. Whether this is because the staff have further improved the planning of the grounds, metal heads have become friendlier over the past four years, or because I've been put on medication since my last visit, we'll never know. Anyway, the general atmosphere at Graspop was, as per usual, a very relaxed one, with people from all over the world coming to listen to and celebrate the music they love so dearly. There are some bands performing on this day too, mostly cover acts such as The Art of Pantera and Diolegacy. It's a good way to get introduced to the festival grounds, get some tokens (imagine Disney money but with skulls on,) and familiarise yourself with the stages, food stalls and the cafe, which is more of a pub with Warlock on full blast.
On to the most important thing however, the music. Kicking off the main stage, or rather, the second main stage as the festival now has two, was hard rock supergroup, The Dead Daisies. The band features a collective of solid names such as Marco Mendoza, Dizzy Reed and former Motley Crue vocalist, John Corabi. Looking at the bands on the members resume such as Guns N Roses, Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake, their good time, hard rocking sound was pretty much what one would expect. This does not, however, stop them from doing their job of getting people on their feet, putting smiles on faces and generally bringing a great vibe to the event that is so vital in making sure a festival gets off to a good start. They're not just a party act either, they've got some genuinly good songs and a number of people seemed to be a little surprised how much they enjoyed the set. Bottom line: If you want to party like it's 1985, go see the Dead Daisies. You'll be glad you did. More...

Formed by Rammstein's Richard Kruspe, Emigrate has now set October 21st as the release date for the band's new studio album - the follow up to the previous 2007 self-titled debut.
Titled "Silent So Long," this sophomore outing - produced by Emigrate and mixed in Los Angeles by Ben Grosse (Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, Disturbed, etc.) - features 11 brand new recordings, with a lead single / video to be announced shortly.
As with the debut, Kruspe adds to his guitar playing / song-writing duties by stepping up to the mic, only this time he's joined by a number of guest singers: Lemmy from Motörhead, Korn's Jonathan Davis, Marilyn Manson, Canadian born Berlin-dweller, Peaches, plus Frank Dellé from chart-topping German collective Seeed.
"I didn't write the songs with specific guests in mind," explains Kruspe, "I just thought who would do the best job on this or that track, and the final performances were everything I was hoping for. You know, I've had about five moments in my music career when I've been left smiling like a child - one was when Rammstein sold out New York's Madison Square Garden in 20 minutes (2010), but the last one was hearing Lemmy on tape. It just sounds fucking great! I wrote him a really long message and he came back 'alright!' Fantastic!"
For Kruspe, still firmly ensconced within the Rammstein ranks, Emigrate has never been a side or a solo project. Preferring to tap into the energy of a team, and looking to revive the collaborative spirit of the East German punk scene he grew from, the guitarist has always put value on those around him, and this time - in addition to the existing personnel of guitarist / producer Olson Involtini and bassist / co-conspirator Arnaud Giroux - he's joined by drummers Mikko Sirén (Apocalyptica) and Joe Letz (Combichrist). As was announced back in May, the '90s shock rock king Marilyn Manson joined on with the cast of biker gang drama Sons Of Anarchy.
Now Marilyn Manson has revealed the first still image of his white supremacist character interacting with main character Jax Teller in prison via his Twitter account (check it out below).
The seventh season of Sons of Anarchy - which will also be the shows last year - is set to kick off on September 9th with an extended hour and 45 minute opening episode.
Filming has now started for the seventh and final season of the biker gang drama Sons of Anarchy, and the show's last season will feature a new cast member: Marilyn Manson!
He will reportedly play a white supremacist who becomes involved with the MC.
The Sons of Anarchy Facebook page just issued this brief announcement:
"Singer. Writer. Provocateur. SOA cast member. Marilyn Manson as officially signed on for a recurring role in the final season."
After a whole month covering black metal bands such as Behemoth and Gorgoroth, you’d have thought that we’d be sick of writing about men in makeup causing outrage. However, this week’s article looks at one of the biggest rock acts of the nineties, fronted by the most controversial name in rock since Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson. Manson himself began life as Brian Warner, who was working as a music journalist when he met guitarist, Scott Putesky, with whom he soon formed a band, which they named Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids. It was decided that the members would adopt stage names which married the names of female icons with serial killers. Warner became Marilyn Manson while Putesky rechristened himself, Daisy Berkowitz. They were joined by bass player, Brian Tutunick (Olivia Newton Bundy) and recorded their first, self-titled demo. After bringing in keyboard player Stephen Bier (Madonna Wayne Gacy) and drummer Fred Streithorst (Sara Lee Lucas,) as well as replacing Bundy with Brad Stewart (Gidget Gein,) the band increased their local profile and gained substantial airplay on WYNX-FM, thanks largely to DJ and fan, Scott David. The early shows were just as theatrical as the ones the band would become known for, featuring such provocative images as women on crosses, children in cages and, due to the lack of a professional pyrotechnician, setting their own props on fire. The group soon caught the attention of Nine Inch Nails frontman, Trent Reznor, who signed the band to his newly formed label, Nothing Records and brought the group on the road as a support act.
Marilyn Manson (as the band had by now shortened their name to) recorded their first album, "The Manson Family Album" in the summer of 1993 but was very unhappy with the result. After playing the record to Reznor, who agreed that the album didn’t sound very good and helped the band re-record and remix the album, which was released the next summer under the new name, "Portrait of an American Family." As soon as work on the record was complete, the band decided to let Gein go after he overdosed on heroin for the fourth time. He was replaced by Twiggy Ramirez who made his live debut with the band on a short headlining tour, during which Manson was arrested in Jacksonville, Florida after the local Christian Coalition accused him of indecency. On the same tour, Manson met Anton LaVey of the Church of Satan, who gave him the title, Reverend. The controversy stirred by Manson’s new title arguably helped earn the band its first headlining tour of North America, during which drummer Sara Lee Lucas would quit after Manson set his drum kit on fire while Lucas was still performing. He was replaced by Ginger Fish and the group hit the road again, this time partnering with Danzig and Korn. More...

It probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise that metal isn't well represented in the annual Grammy awards, with possibly our most noticeable wins coming from Slayer in 2007 and 2008.
This year wasn't an exception, and unfortunately there isn't much wiggle room for actual metal acts to win when hard rock and heavy metal are lumped into a single category.
None of our "Best of 2012" winners here at Metalunderground.com made the nominations, and fully heavy bands only managed to get into the "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance" category at the Grammy's this year. The nominees were:
"Love Bites (So Do I)" – Halestorm
"I'm Alive" – Anthrax
"Blood Brothers" (live) – Iron Maiden
"Ghost Walking" – Lamb of God
"No Reflection" – Marilyn Manson
"Whose Life (Is It Anyways?)" – Megadeth
In a move that will likely leave metal fans scratching their heads, but will please fans of the mainstream, Halestorm took home the win for "Love Bites (So Do I)." Footage of the event and Halestorm's acceptance of the Grammy can be viewed below, courtesy of Artisan News Service.
In other news of interest to hard rock and metal lovers, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails snagged a Grammy win for "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" soundtrack in the category of "Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media," along with a related win for "Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package" for the same soundtrack. Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie are hitting the road together this fall, co-headlining the “Twins of Evil” tour.
Kicking off September 28th when both Zombie and Manson co-headline the first day of the Desert Uprising Festival in Phoenix, Arizona, expect defiant rock’n'roll showmanship in the form of these unholy rollers with the first U.S. date wrapping in Dallas on Halloween, October 31st. For tickets on sale and purchasing info, log onto Marilynmanson.com or Robzombie.com.
“Finally! Why did the most obvious tour take so long to happen? Who knows? Who cares? It’s happening now,” stated Zombie. “If good taste is the chief enemy of great art, then we should be able to fill the Louvre with this fucking tour. Be prepared for something wicked this way a-coming.”
“I have sympathy for the Whore of Babylon that gave birth to these twins of evil, and this abomination of a tour,” says Marilyn Manson. “There is no babysitter, and there is no repairing her womb. If Rob Zombie doesn’t fuck you up, than I surely will. Hide all drugs and firearms… I’m coming to town."
J Devil, the DJ alter ego of KoRn’s frontman Jonathan Davis, will support the Manson/Zombie dates with his chaotic electro-metal. “I like to think of JDevil as the ‘anti-christ’ of EDM,” he said. “To play alongside Zombie and Manson is going to be a fucking sinister night all around, and an unbelievable theatrical experience. I can’t wait.”
With more to be announced, dates for the “Twins of Evil” tour are as follows: More...
The organisers of the British leg of the Sonisphere festival have announced that they have had to cancel this years event, which was set to feature headline performances from KISS, Faith No More and Queen + Adam Lambert, amongst others. The statement from the organisers reads as follows:
"It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012.
"Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar. Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere’s audience would rightly expect. More...
