Napalm Death To Play MTV Music Week?

A campaign has been launched to have grindcore pioneers Napalm Death perform at the upcoming MTV Music Week event, a four day long pop festival which is also expected to feature include quadruple platinum selling girl group Little Mix and former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, although no names have been confirmed as of yet. Popular bookmakers Paddy Power has Napalm Death at 12/1 to be added to the festival, above other British mainstream acts like Professor Green. A poll to determine which act festival goers would most like to see is running at the Plymouth Argus.

Napalm Death are no strangers to playing outside their comfort zone, having previously played the Glastonbury Festival in 2017 (which was headlined by Foo Fighters, Ed Sheeran and Radiohead) and this year will perform at the Boomtown Fair, alongside such acts as Lauryn Hill and UB40. They've also appeared in mainstream shows such as Never Mind The Buzzcocks, TFI Friday and the Craig Charles presented children's show, What's That Noise?

Metal Underground recently spoke with Napalm Death frontman Barney Greenway, discussing progress on their new album, the status of guitarist Mitch Harris, Brexit and his time with Extreme Noise Terror (who are also playing this year's Boomtown Fair.) You can check it out below. More...

SOIA And Napalm Death Demonstrate Persistence

In an age where Summer festivals dominate, it's nice to have something to look forward to in the Winter as well. While many fans of hardcore will find their most renowned names playing big metal festivals, the Persistence Tour has, since 2005, offered European fans of the genre a great night out in the form of a massive, travelling matinee. This year saw New York hardcore legends Sick Of It All headline the trek once again, having previously taken part in the event four times, being joined by crossover thrash favourites Municipal Waste, Detroit metalcore outfit Walls Of Jericho and for one night only, grindcore godfathers, Napalm Death.

Having been unable to catch the opening two bands (Siberian Meat Grinder and Take Offence,) due to interviews with Napalm Death and Municipal Waste (watch this space,) my first live act for the day was Oi! outfit Booze & Glory. What makes this band very very special is what they stand for. Booze & Glory were formed by two Polish immigrants and over the years their ranks have included people from other countries such as Greece and Sweden, while the English members are themselves descended from immigrants. This background, combined with their love of traditional skinhead and British culture is one of the best slaps to the face of racism and xenophobia, showing the world that we can embrace each other while remaining true to our heritage and cultures. As for the music itself, it was a lot of fun. Booze & Glory offer a good time, in a similar vein to Dropkick Murphys, plenty of sing along anthems and a fierce stage presence. Frankly their studio output doesn't do them justice and I urge all fans of punk, hardcore, Oi! and the skinhead subculture to seek out a live show soon. Superb! More...

Brutal Assault Festival Band Upddate Announced

Brutal Assault Festival announces another band update for its upcoming 2019 edition. Tells the festival promotion agency:

"Let’s open this mega update with a black metal stormblast! Over seven years, deathlike silence has filled the halls of the world’s biggest black metal forge, whilst powers have been gathering to resurrect the band right in time for their 25th anniversary. Wicked aural filth comes from the islands with GODFLESH, who are highly regarded as one of the pioneers of industrial metal; they took industrial to the next level with their fuse of heavy guitars and mixing it with slow drum loops and effects and their unique approach has spawned several musical styles since their conception.

Napalm Death Premiere New Music Video

Napalm Death debut a new music video for their track “Standardization” from their recently released rarities compilation, “Coded Smears And More Uncommon Truths“. Comments frontman Mark “Barney” Greenway:

“Videos I find one of the trickiest mediums to make vibrant and impactful. Costin, the producer though, had a lot of stuff from our Roadburn Festival presentation which seemed to fit the music quite nicely and reflect the song’s subject matter about the utter despair of a colourless life and desire of a more conservative forces for a homogenous world according to gender, sexuality, human habits and, well, generally everything. No thanks!”

Napalm Death will join up with Slayer, Lamb Of God, Anthrax and Testament on this summer tour: More...

Thrashback Thursday: Suffer The Children

Each week in our Thrashback Thursday column, we take a look at one song, released at least two years ago (though usually way before) and examine what makes them such a great song. After witnessing a furious performance from grindcore daddies, Napalm Death last night, (see review here,) and speaking with frontman Mark "Barney" Greenway for half an hour (interview coming soon,) it seemed the perfect time to look back at one of many classics from the band, with the decision going to, "Suffer The Children."

"Suffer The Children" was the first music video from the band as well as the first single from the 1990 album, "Harmony Corruption," their first with Barney Greenway on vocals, who had come in from Benediction to replace Lee Dorrian, who himself was about to find success with influential doom metal band, Cathedral. The album was a success in the American metal underground and fared well in their native Britain, but was met with some cynicism at home from those who were unhappy with the death metal influences seeping in to the grindcore sound.

The song itself actually has something of a thrash metal quality, a break neck tempo and a memorable vocal delivery, as well as a rather catchy riff. Drummer Mick Harris sounds fantastic on this song, as he did throughout his entire time with Napalm Death and really anchors the track with his precision timing and rapid blast beats. The guitar sound is absolutely filthy, just the way fans wanted it back then (and many do now) which is a major part of creating the dirty, if you will "street" sound of song. There are many highlights on "Harmony Corruption" but many would point to this anthem against religious indoctrination as the record's greatest asset. More...

Napalm Death Shows No Mercy In Murcia

Life for a metal fan in the south east of Spain can be a little frustrating. Most bands that tour Europe tend to only perform in Madrid and Barcelona when they come through, with occasional shows in Seville and Bilbao from time to time. However, deep in the heart of Spain's holiday area, in the city of Murcia, lies the Garaje Beat Club, a small venue which has been able to bring in some respected and popular names such as Lacuna Coil, Ratos de Porao and G.B.H. Tonight, the godfathers of grindcore Napalm Death were in town to perform at the club and treat the Iberian Peninsula to a blistering show the likes of which only they can provide.

There were no less than three support bands in tow tonight, perhaps the best of which was Fostioner from the Spanish capital of Madrid. The quintet has so far released two records, the most recent of which was the four track, "Chandal Defenders," which was represented on the night by such songs as "Margaret Thrasher." My Spanish is far from perfect, so I was unable to understand much of the between song banter, but the few who had arrived early were laughing quite a lot. Fostioner displayed a great musicianship, influenced by death and grindcore as much as thrash, which makes for a solid metal sound. Plus, any group whose signature song is called, "Spaceship Bukkake" automatically wins. Great way to start the show. More...
