Napalm Death Reveals New Album Details

British grindcore legends Napalm Death have announced that the name of their forthcoming new studio album will be, "Utalitarian." The fourteenth album from the group will be released through Century Media Records on February 27th, with a North American release to follow the next day. The band has been performing a song from, "Utalitarian" on their recent tour of Canada entitled, "Quarantine." You can check out a fan filmed video of the song below.

Speaking about the album's lyrical theme and title, vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway stated:

"After some deliberation, we have decided on Utilitarian as the album title. We generally try to avoid generic titles, and this seemed to have a lot of scope to it. I won't explain the full meaning of Utilitarianism here because it's an ethical theory, and as ethical theories go, the depth and debate around it is quite heavy at times. It has a certain 'morality' aspect to it and that isn't something that drives me, so I also certainly have issues with it.

"So, rather than just nail that straight to the mast, of course we wanted to put our own spin on it by suggesting that those (i.e. the utilitarian in us, perhaps) who try to challenge everything, or fight against conventions, well, we go through periods of real self-doubt where we wonder if we're really making a difference. I suppose the conclusion is that, for the sake of all our freedoms, you should never stop, as even the feeling of resistance is at least a signal to those who would like to entirely control and dominate us - meaning everything from our instinctive behavior to our human entitlement to walk the earth unprovoked.

"Regarding the album overall, the final creases should be ironed out fairly soon, and immediately after that, we thought it would be good to top it off with a few UK dates. We've been playing one new song ("Quarantined") out on a tour of Canada and it's been well received, so we hope to perhaps throw in another one for now. Either way, we'll be bouncing off the walls again near you very soon. Cheers all." More...

Napalm Death Re-Signs With Century Media

Century Media Records has renewed its deal with Napalm Death. In regards to the re-signing, Jens Prüter (Head of A&R, Century Media Records) comments, "Napalm Death is not only one of the most important and influential extreme metal bands, they are also a band that always raises their voice against social ills-- and even against record companies (remember 'Enemy Of Music Business'). Therefore I'm even more glad about Napalm Death re-signing to Century Media for more great albums of intelligent and meaningful noise. And have you ever seen a weak Napalm Death show? I haven't, and I have seen them MANY times and will never get tired to see them again and again. Thanks to Mitch, Danny, Shane and Barney for their resilience and resistance-- and a special thanks to Marc from MAD for fighting on their side."

Napalm Death vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway also comments, "We're very happy to be re-signing to Century Media. In fact, I think it's the first time we've actually re-signed on a longer term deal with anybody since the days when we didn't strictly know that we could be digging ourselves a big hole with labels...It's important for Napalm to stay with an independent, and Century proved to us with their overall enthusiasm and attention that this is where we needed to be. There's a perfect balance of getting the band out there in people's faces whilst still understanding the point that not everything is acceptable or 'ethical' promotion. It's more like working with friends who actually care, and who could argue with that?"

The band finished recording the upcoming 14th studio album earlier this year at Parlour Studio in Kettering, U.K. with long-time producer Russ Russell, and the group is currently on the road in Russia. You can catch Napalm Death live on the following dates: More...

Asia Metal Festival 2011 Recap

Another edition of Asia Metal Festival went off this past weekend in Seoul, South Korea, bringing together extreme metal bands from all parts of the metal spectrum hailing from the host nation, Japan, Taiwan, and the U.K.

Roughly 600 fans, largely from South Korea but also with a large ex-pat contingent from the U.S., Canada, and all over Europe, turned up for the event in raucous anticipation of headliner Napalm Death’s first appearance on Korean soil.

Seoul melodic death metal act Terrormight kicked off the evening, or rather late afternoon with the festival’s 4:30 start time. The five piece band took full advantage of their 25-minute time slot, showcasing their rich, early-era In Flames sound with a keyboardist adding some rich underlying textures. Many punters showed up early and were ready to expend some energy, head banging enthusiastically at the front of the stage at V Hall in the city’s Hongdae District, an area filled with restaurants, bars, and drunken revelers of all ages. Napalm Death Finishes Recording New Album

In a recent interview with Ovmetal.com, Napalm Death bassist Shane Embury revealed that the band has finished recording their fourteenth studio album, which is expected to be released this October through Century Media Records. An excerpt from the interview reads as follows:

OV: Have you completed the recording of the next NAPALM DEATH record?

Well, it’s pretty much finished, Russ [Russel, the producer] will go into the studio in July again, just to master it and fine-tune little pieces here and there. We tend to listen to it for a few weeks and see if there’s anything to change. It’s better to just reflect on the album for a couple of weeks before you decide finally what the right mix is, but it’s pretty much done.

OV: Is there anything you can tell me about the new album or how it will be different from your last one, “Time Waits for No Slave”?

It’s hard to say. We recorded 19 songs and an instrumental in some respects, so 20 tracks altogether. It is different, in what way? I don’t know. I think it’s pretty hard to tell people if it’s like this or like that – it got many elements of what NAPALM DEATH is all about. I hope nobody will get disappointed. It has lot of fast stuff on it; lots of classic typical killer riffs, and there are a couple of songs where Mitch [guitar] and Barney [vocals] split the vocals between each other. That’s little different, because Mitch’s vocals are not as deep, so Barney and him kind of complimented each other. I’m a little too close to it now but I’m very happy with the album, it has lot of different pieces, and intricacies. There are guitar pieces which are kind of experimentally strange and different for us, but if you’re a fan of the band for a long time, it got everything you need [Laughs]…

Napalm Death Frontman Appears On SSS Album

British crossover thrashers SSS have revealed that Napalm Death frontman Barney Greenway will appear as a guest vocalist on the band's forthcoming new album, titled "Problems to the Answer."

Greenway performs guest vocals on the tracks "The Kill Floor," "Here Comes The Neighbourhood," and "Roar." The new album "Problems to the Answer" is due to be released in Europe on June 6th and in North America on July 12th.

Barney Greenway comments on his guest appearance: "Foxy really knows his musical onions and when he had some parts for me to do, I knew it was going to be a gas. The main part had a Discharge-y feel to it, so I was sold on that instantly. Went in, shouted, went home. No fucking about. Good stuff."

SSS frontman Foxy also added, "Barney was on a shortlist of one - it was him or no one. Knew he'd be into the direction of our latest musical outing and the stance the songs take were right up his street. Some serious barking was required and his dulcet tones didn't disappoint." More...
