The Northern Darkness Festival, which would have featured At The Gates, Graveworm, Napalm Death, and many more, has now been cancelled. The organizers of the fest issued the following statement:
"Today we must deliver the disappointing news that The Northern Darkness Festival has been cancelled. The aim of the festival was to bring the best in unsigned and international death and black metal artists from around the world to a new event in the UK more akin to the European festival line-ups.
"Unfortunately despite a lot of interest from bands wanting to play from all over the world we have not seen the same level of interest from the general public and to date ticket sales have been extremely disappointing, and it is with this in mind we have to make to unfortunate decision not to continue with the event.
"In short events like this can not take place if people do not want to come and support them, with less than 2 months to go until the event date less than 15% of available tickets have been sold and the majority of those were from outside the local area and even other countries.
"We wanted to give the North East a place on the metal festival scene and had hoped to grow the festival over the coming years into a major international event but without fans wanting to come and support an event of this size we are left with no option but to cancel.
"We would like to thank those that showed support for the event and to all the bands billed as well as those who applied to take part in the unsigned band competition and those who did purchase a ticket in advance. The UK does have some stellar alternative festivals with Bloodstock and Damnation festival but it appears the UK was not quite ready for The Northern Darkness.
"Tickets purchased directly will be refunded automatically over the next week, if you purchased your ticket from the venue you will be able to get a refund from them. Please allow 7 days for your refund to reach you before contacting us. We anticipate all refunds will be completed within 7 days and you will be contacted on the email address you gave when purchasing your ticket. If you have not received you refund within 7 days please email us: firstname.lastname@example.org."

This year marks 15 years of Obscene Extreme and to celebrate the occasion the organizers of the festival decided to go all out in extreme style by hosting an additional three festivals in three additional continents.
Over the last few months Obscene Extreme has appeared in Mexico City - Mexico, Jakarta - Indonesia, and Melbourne - Australia. There has been much success but also some failures and after some time at home to reflect on the adventure the man behind the whole idea, Curby, has spoken about the experience on the run up to the final Obscene Extreme Festival in Czech Republic this July:
"Hello freaks!!! This is Curby/obscene... I believe that you our loyal OEF fans have followed us on our tour so you probably know what happened but for those who haven't I would like to sum up our first ever OEF World tour. When I was pondering over our plans for the World tour I was really full of enthusiasm (and actually I still am). I hoped for something new but our first world volume was a really tough game, not only financially but also emotionally. It's very difficult to understand how big differences are between Europe, Mexico and Indonesia... I knew it would be different, but so much? What can you do if you pay everything in advance as in Mexico and people don't work at all? Not much... when you read my statements for every continent, you`ll understand me... More...
After completing a co-headlining North American tour with speed punks Municipal Waste, extreme act Napalm Death will now be coming back to the States with Cannibal Corpse and Immolation for the 2013 installment of the Decibel Magazine tour (Cretin, Beyond Creation, and Magrudergrind will also join the tour as rotating support). Vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway comments about this upcoming trek:
"Twice in the USA in the space of a year? Must pinch ourselves a little harder. It's like 22 years ago all over again. Well, the Municipal Waste trip was a very beautiful thing, and we found things to be very vibrant and people rolled out in force. So Albert from Decibel asked us back in an excited voice, and we said 'Oh, go on then' in an excited voice, and thus we'll be seeing you sooner rather than later. It'll be fast, it'll be furious - guaranteed."
After the maiden voyage in 2012, Decibel Magazine is doubling down on veteran star power for a second annual national tour.
This spring, the plague spreads as Decibel brings you three living legends of death metal and grindcore: the preeminent gore institution Cannibal Corpse; rabble-rousing U.K. grind icons Napalm Death, and NYDM stalwarts Immolation. The following press release was issued about the tour:
"While occultism permeated last spring's inaugural dB tour—featuring exclusively European headliners in Behemoth, Watain, the Devil's Blood and In Solitude—they looked (mostly) to North America for this year's unholy assemblage. Three of Decibel's favorite underground powerhouses will take on this year's rotating opening slot: demented Bay Area death-grinders Cretin, Canadian tech-prog upstarts Beyond Creation and Beltway grind/powerviolence crushers Magrudergrind. And the time is ripe to see the new bleed into the old: three of the six artists performing are expected to have new records detonating during the tour.
"Kicking off in May, this year's Decibel Magazine Tour gauntlet will last a full week longer than its 2012 counterpart, spanning over 30 North American dates. Presented by Metal Blade, Indiemerchstore.com, Nuclear Blast, Lace Pickups, Century Media and Season of Mist, the 2013 Decibel Magazine Tour will bring together the kind of globally-renowned, boundary-pushing innovators that have made it possible for the magazine to continue thriving for over 100 issues. Coming off a tour noted for Behemoth frontman Nergal's triumphant return to the States following his battle with leukemia—which culiminated in an explosive sold-out closing gig in New York City—Decibel had no choice but to go bigger and even more badass." Even though Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012 happened just a couple of miles from my apartment, it felt like an epic, festival journey. It was akin to driving from Texas to Maryland for the Maryland Death Fest. The road trip I took to a festival was in 2001 to the defunct Milwaukee Metal Fest. That trip was a mere 7-8 hours in the car from Michigan. Making it to Fun Fun Fun Fest meant 24 hours in the car, from Michigan to Texas. Unlike any other festival trip, though, I could sleep in my own bed after a long day of music and festivities.
4:30 AM November 2nd—I hit the highway outside Sikeston, Missouri, made it to Georgetown, Texas round 3:30 PM and immediately left for Austin. The highway reminded me of those nature programs depicting army ants traveling head to butt in a single file line through the forest. The festival surely added to Friday’s gridlock. I anxiously pushed on, trying to make it home in time to catch the best day of the fest for metal. Napalm Death, Municipal Waste, Burning Love, Converge and Tomahawk comprised this lineup. Despite my diligence, I would miss all of these acts.
Having arrived at the festival around 7 PM, I figured I missed the day’s metal acts, and would look towards Run DMC’s performance. My coverage was even further delayed by mistakes in issuing press credentials. While waiting for my photo pass, droning notes emanated from the Yellow Stage. Normally this stage features comedians, but after 5 PM, bands took the stage. I asked a staff member who was playing and he said Super Chunk. More...

With a month before boarding the Barge to Hell left, the organizers have announced two more bands: metal supergroup Lock Up, featuring Nicholas Barker on drums (ex-Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir), Shane Embury on bass (Napalm Death), Anton Reisenegger on guitar (Criminal), and Tomas Lindberg on vocals (At The Gates, Disfear) and Nachtmystium.
Also announced was the cancellation of BELPHEGOR. Stated the organizers: "We tried our best to work something out, but regrettably must confirm that they won't be part of BARGE TO HELL. We will make sure that we have a suitable replacement."

6:00am. YOU’VE KNOCKED A SCREW LOOSE, a taunting Protestant voice rattles my inner skull in a booze-muddled echo as I lope across a bed of sharp stones and plunge into the frigid river just this side of bare-assed.
The full immersion drowns that pesky voice mid-sentence. Eyes open under water; I find peaceful seclusion for a few precious, bone-chilling seconds.
Confirming the diagnosis as I breach the surface and hoist myself to my feet, waist-deep, skin already tightening from the abrupt system shock, a guy on the beach mutters something to his friend, shoots me a strange glare – did I somehow manage to insult his mom? – and twirls his finger near his temple. Yep.
Whatever. I reinforce the diagnosis and thrust double horns skyward, hoping to give the appearance of a calculated, decisive, tough, metal-inspired action and not the clumsy result of a dare, drowned brain cells, and a liquid blanket.
