If he's that good I'm gonna have to see him. He's playing in the city over here on the 16th damn. I gotta get money for that.
I'm a pretty big fan of him either way. Live or studio. Love? by SYL is one of my favorite songs. I miss SYL sooooooo much haha. I'd give anything to see one more album by them.

ZMA: I'd go see him if you get the chance. This video does not due Devin justice at all. I've been a huge SYL fan alongside some of his solo work.
I must admit that I don't care for his last 4 solo albums.
My top 3 Devin Townsend albums:
1. "Alien" - Strapping Young Lad
2. "Accelerated Evolution" - The Devin Townsend Band
3. "Synchestra" - The Devin Townsend Band

Blindgreed1: If you don't have "Accelerated Evolution" I strongly recommend that you acquire it. This album is prog-metal to the max. You need it. Devin's vocals and guitar playing are at their best on this one IMO.
If you want a preview (youtube.com) just listen to the forth and fifth tracks on the album, "Deadhead" and "Suicide", respectively. These two songs will blow your damn hair back. I'm not kidding.
After that listen to the first track, "Depth Charge", which is simply metal awesomeness and then you'll need this album!

Blindgreed1: Hahaha. You're welcome. I don't really listen to a lot of metal, but the metal I do listen to tends to be progressive in some way.
If I were going to do some kind of prog-metal project I'd listen to a playlist consisting of these metal songs. That would create something epic.
In alphabetical order (by Band):
1. "Selkies: The Endless Obsession" - BTBAM
2. "Deadhead" - Devin Townsend
3. "Flourish" - The Contortionist
4. "Flying Whales" - Gojira
5. "So Did We" -Isis
6. "Set Fire to the Hive" - Karnivool
7. "The Czar" - Mastodon
8. "Future Breed Machine" - Meshuggah
9. "Deliverance" -Opeth
10. "Lateralus" - Tool
Hope this helps.

Cynic: Alien is so good. I didn't care much for Ziltoid. As much as I like and respect Devin I never really got into his rock-opera/funny kind of style. This is one of the reasons why Deconstruction was such a major disappointment to me. That plus all of the guest talent on that album should have contributed more!

At first I liked a only few Ziltoid tracks and skipped a lot of what I saw as ambient filler. But the whole thing grew on me and it honestly wrestles with Alien for my favourite now. Haven't heard Deconstruction yet - still waiting to get it in the mail if you believe that. I never thought the guest would amount to anything anyway but sure is a good way to market an album.

^he actually said in an interview hes actually p***ed that the guest list got leaked. He didnt intend to market their appearances because they were rather minor for the most part. For christ sakes Greg Puciato's vocals in the Mighty Masturbator dont come in until at least after ten minutes into the song, and even then he says maybe ten lines.
I was p***ed at the lack of guest usage at first, but then I realized that half of them were just so well worked into the contexts of the songs they were in, that they were difficult to notice. The Death metal vocals in Praise the Lowered are more of an atmospheric element than a driving force; they barely register at all except to add depth to the sound of the song. And that happens repeatedly throughout the album.
That perspective of it, coupled with Devins explanation of their limited appearances, as in that they were more just guys stopping by to add to already constructed songs, Ive quickly gotten over that dissapointment and come to love this album even more than his SYL albums. And Ive been either bored to tears or in a state of mild dislike in regards to a majority of his solo work.
If you ignore the hype surrounding the guests, and just appreciate what they add to the songs, the album becomes a much more enjoyable experience, is what I'm trying to say lol

Ahhh The Contortionist was in that list. Great band PPTF. Great song. And Flying Whales. Love that.
I haven't really listened to any of his solo stuff besides Deconstruction. I loved all the SYL albums though.
I don't know....progressive for me is a hard genre to catch my interest, because I feel once a song goes over 10 minutes it's rough on me to keep my concentration so the music needs to be really really good.

ZMA: I just got into The Contortionist. They are a lot like BTBAM in many ways. Those two bands GET it.
Prog music isn't easy to get into. There are many bad prog bands as well. Great Prog music really demands attention and an application for the whole product (album). Take BTBAM's "Colors" for example. That album is filled with great individual songs, but when you listen to the album from start to finish you hear something greater. That's what attracts me to prog music.
