Killswitch Engage Singer Howard Jones Leaves Tour, All That Remains Singer Steps In

Band Photo: Killswitch Engage (?)
Killswitch Engage has announced that lead singer Howard Jones has been forced to leave the band's current headlining tour with The Devil Wears Prada and Dark Tranquility due to unforeseen circumstances. All That Remains vocalist Phil LaBonte will be filling in for Jones for a few shows while the band makes the decision about what will happen to the rest of the tour.

It would be interesting to hear how Phil Labonte sounds with the band, he tried out for the spot before Howard beat him out for it... I've preferred All That Remains since their This Darkened Heart album, Killswitch has just seemed too bland/emo since then while ATR has gotten better

It's nice to know there are such caring people in this world. Instead of being concerned for Howard's well-being, the majority of comments I'm reading (not just here but all over the 'net) are extremely insensitive & in very poor taste. You ALL should be ashamed of yourselves. Ok, so maybe you're not a fan of KsE, maybe the last album rubbed you the wrong way (I for one THOROUGHLY enjoy it on a regular basis) but is that any reason to sh*t on the guy? He is *genuinely* hurt & we should all be hoping for a speedy recovery.
And PS: Those asking for Jesse's return: PLEASE MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIVES. AOJB was an epic album, no doubt. But he left on his own recognizance 8 YEARS AGO AND he has his own band....WHY would he come back to KsE???? Howard is the lead singer. Deal with it.

10. writes:
sorry but Howard's the man he sounds better and he has a better voice I didn't even like KSE until Howard started singing with them the fact he won't be on the tour I might just sell my ticket bcuz without his voice on kSE songs won't sound the same I hope he get better and wish him the best of luck with the situation. maybe people on here don't like the idea of him being black, singing metal and does it very good so good that the band took off after he join the band unlike when jesse was with them and I like jesse band make me say hmmmmmmm

I think Phil will do a good job covering for Howard. He's a fantastic vocalist and I enjoy his work in To The Sons Of Man, Self Revolution, Hope Is... and Irreversal. He's a good friend of the band and I know he'll do a good job.
18. writes:
Phil sounds fantastic on studio albums...he's actually quite terrible live. I can say that honestly too, since I've seen ATR live 4 times now. Every time he sounds like sh**. Howard on the other hand is a BEAST live. You may not like his style but him on the album sounds like him live. Get well soon Howard!

22. writes:
I love Howard! I hope he is ok. I am kind of curious to see how Phil handles it. I've seen ATR 2 times and 1 time they cancelled because Phil's voice went out. To be honest, I didn't think he was that great live. During all of the singing parts he would turn the mic around and have the audience sing everything. I want to hear him sing a little!
As far as bring back Jesse...Are you guys crazy? Howard is so much better than Jesse. Jesse is a good singer but I don't think he is a good fit for KSE. They have thrived since Howard replaced him.
Howard is awesome live. I'm gonna miss him when I see the concert in Fargo next Wednesday. Cross your fingers that they don't cancel.

First @ Natsquatch watch who u taking to because I not the one I don't play those games second and most important because I'm black have the rite to call it how I see it. all I every see on here or any other blog site is how much they hate howard why? they never give me a good answer they always use jesse which is B.S. that dude left the band and started his own band how about they stop listen to KSE and listen to jesse band I'm tired of hearing them cry about that and howard is a better singer period just listen to them

24. writes:
@livingDeaDbeat00: I disagree. I don't have to know someone personally to care about them or be concerned about their well-being. KsE happens to be my favorite band, so naturally when something like this happens, there is cause for concern. A lot of the 1st reactions I read early this morning were whiny b*tches talking about how p***ed off they were, how much $ they spent on tickets/gas. Granted, a lot of people didn't know the true nature of these "unforseen circumstances" until this afternoon, but there have been tons of people online all day talking trash. Not all of them, but a good majority of them. Above all, it just disturbs me that there are "fans" that have these ridiculous expectations from bands to play no matter what! They don't care, they just want their show.
25. writes:
You're black. Super. I don't care.
You say you're calling it like you see it, but your vision is obviously severely blurred. The metal community is NOT filled with racists, and I see plenty of people on boards (and on this very article) who say they actually do prefer Howard. You're inventing problems that don't exist.
Also, I have listened to Killswitch, they were one of the first bands I got into way back in the day, and I never said anything about a preference for Jesse or Howard. But now that you mention it, I do think Jesse was a far better lyricist and sang with a lot more emotion.
People are going to have different opinions than you, and you're just going to have to deal with it.
26. writes:
Esoteric: You are right on point. I love ATR's studio albums but they are a major flop live. Phil just doesn't have the energy, it will show even more with kse than it ever did with ATR. I gotta say- it would be so badass to see Jessie back on tour for a couple more shows with these guys... play only old songs, it would be my dream... but back to reality, going to this show for DARK TRANQUILLITY!

Valentine, it's a bit of a waste of time to look for "heaviness" in Killswitch's music to begin with. They're good at what they do, which is making accessible, melodic metalcore for the masses to enjoy.
I read that according to what the band said at one of their shows, Jones is having back problems. He was napping on the couch before their set, and could literally not move off of it when he woke up, so he had to be taken to the hospital.

i use this excuse quite frequently
seriously though i hope his back gets better, back problems are a b1tch

42. writes:
Don't get me wrong i love jesse as well but i doubt he will ever rejoin killswitch and howard is an awesome singer i think people just get upset when something changes and most people hate change and i know the last two albums have been not as heavy but bands have to evolve a little bit or else they will just get bored and quit

45. writes:
OK... so i wasn't so sure about this, until I saw the setlist. They are only playing one song from the new cd, and they are playing 3 songs of the very first self-titled cd!! Songs like Vide Infra that I never thought I would get to see live.... this definitely makes it worth it.

46. writes:
Im seeing them in Seattle. Ive seen live footage of Phil singing and his live screams are so much cleaner than Howards. He botched Holy Diver big time though. Anyhow I'm still excited. Im glad they aren't playing their new stuff because no way Phil pulls it off.
47. writes:
too bad killswitch engaged sucks, thusly all this chit-chat is useless.
HAH!!
EN-GARDE YOU METALCORE QUEERS! LET THE BASHING BEGIN! I'm in the mood for a conversation about why metalcore is diluted form of metal that rarely reaches it's limited potential in the first place, as opposed to the belief that it's the heaviest metal ever and totally not gay....ahem.
SO hit me, I'm bored.

49. writes:
however says they dont like killswitch because they kicked jesse out is a f'in retard he quit. howard is 10 times the vocalist of jesse leach plus he blew out his voice listen to his new band and seemless their sh**. phil is a great vocalist but not nearly as versatile as howard jones and that shows. and if you dont like kse then why the hell are you on this page anyway. im excited for my obsession the new kse song thats coming out next week on the god of war 3 cd. me and the real fans will be listening to it.

I disagree about metalcore being inferior to any other sub-genre. It has its shining stars, good bands, mediocre bands, and sh** bands, just like anything else. Trash, death, folk, black, doom, metalcore, power, doom, melo-death, deathcore, you get the idea. Not one of those is any more legitimate or "true" than the other, it just comes down to personal taste.

55. writes:
I dont believe that metalcore is inferior to EVERY sub-genre...nu-metal is far more terrible, and deathcore makes me sick. lol
The problem is, is that too often bands in the metalcore genre are bands that are riding the In Flames style of melo-death, with none of the boundary-pushing(Killswitch). Only with the genre dying from suffocating on mediocrity are bands actually rising to the occasion and making fantastic music.
Unfortunately, Deathcore rose up to continue the problem. :P

50. HarvesterOfSorrow18 is a dumba** and anyone who agrees with them metalcore is by far not the worst form of metal. are you serious haha? dont even get me started shadows falls, ATR, KSE, and of course the always getting better Trivium. Trivium is metalcore and their new album shogun is simply amazing. one of the best metal albums of 2009 by far i may even say longer than that to be honest. if you havent heard it take a listen and hear some metalcore at its finest!!! and like i said before if you dont like metalcore or killswitch then why are you even on this page anyway??? because nobody gives a fuc* what you think.

Jesse was a far better lyricist and sang with a lot more emotion??? so is that why jesse cant start up another band with any good hit songs hes had plenty of time to do it? seemless blows and his new band is terrible. howard got nominated for awards for the end of heartache what jesse get hmmm? nothing jesse is a better singer? howard is much more versatile all of his songs have much more emotion fixation on the darkness are you kidding? they even redid the music video with howards version but your the pro here. and ur right im sure jesse showed alot of emotion when he permentantly blew out his voice look that up to while your at it.
Whose the pro here?
62. writes:
Metalcore= mixing metal and hardcore together. Coalesce, Unearth, Shadows Fall, Killswitch, you get the idea, all of these bands do this. Not Trivium. There is ZERO hardcore influence in their music. They just get lumped in with that category because they hit big with Ascendancy at the time of metalcore's peak in popularity, kind of like System of a Down got lumped in with Nu Metal for having a vaguely similar sound. Harmonized guitars and mixing of singing and harsh vocals doesn't make a band metalcore.
You're not seriously saying that the amount of recognition a band receives or how many hits they have is a sign of quality? By your logic, Nickleback is far better than hitless bands like, say, Lykathea Aflame or Bolt Thrower.
Yes, I think Jesse sang with more emotion, him blowing his voice out in his time with KSE doesn't change that. I also happen to think Seemless and The Empire Shall Fall are great. That's my OPINION (never said it was fact), just like it's your opinion that Howard is better. It's fine if you think that, just don't treat it as fact because then nobody is going to take you seriously. Your ignorance and expecting everyone to think the same as you is why I criticized your a$$ in the first place, and still am now.

65. writes:
Ok so i probably shouldnt have said inferior..definately just an opinion dont take it too seriously dude...dnt get me wrong i like bands like KSE, Unearth, ATR, AILD, Shadows Fall, Trivium (but fail to see them as a metalcore band) but i do feel that alot of other metalcore bands are almost exact replicas and it does begin to make it hard to find those type of bands that really push it to 'a new level' (if u can excuse the pantera pun) and keep that sub genre as exciting as others..
I agree 100% with Natsquatch in the fact that this is probably the case with all sub genres as well.. but it seems that metalcore is more of a phase of metal that is starting to fade out (as deathcore kicks in..) and that just kinda shows that its style isnt one made for longevity..But after saying all of that sh** it is still just my opinion and take it whatever way u like!

68. writes:
natsquatch u said it urself trivium is metalcore haha ember to inferno and ascendancy and even shogun are prime examples of metalcore albums. and metalcore isnt dying its on the rise and getting better and better. god forbids new album is awesome. shadows falls new album kicks a$$ and kse and atrs new albums are awesome and thats why all of those bands played mayhem festival last year and this year. but your right its dying thats why theirs no death metal on mayhem fest this year right? Howard jones can play for a band like blood has been shed and killswitch and not miss a step he has so many unique vocal styles shows in songs like holy diver. and for those who think atr is better than killswitch their producer for all of their albums was adam d and other members of killswitch haha...
71. writes:
The phrase metalcore has evolved to mean something more complex than just a mix of hardcore and metal, otherwise it'd be the same as crossover. Music is complex and trying to define sounds with one word is not easy when some people take things at face value (i.e. all bands that scream are screamo? All bands that sing about death or have harsh vocals are death metal?).
There are definite parts of Trivium's music on Ascendancy which I would define as metalcore. They're not as metalcorey as others, but enough that I'd define that release as metalcore. As if it needed to be said, I hate it all.
72. writes:
Cynic, I wouldn't say that it was a metalcore album, though I will agree that there were some common traits with the genre. The Crusade and Shogun were nowhere close to metalcore. I know you didn't say that, I'm just getting that out of the way before that Justin idiot makes a big deal about me slightly agreeing with you.
Many people tend to either label them as either a sh**ty metalcore band, a sh**ty Metallica ripoff, or a great "thrash" band. I disagree with all three of those, I think they take elements from a few different genres and make it into their own sound, which is great or terrible, depending on who you ask.

I saw Killswitch this past Thursday in mpls, MN. Great stage show and awesome sound. The band played fantastic, the cape was funny as always. Didn't know Howard wasn't going to be there. Im watching and enjoying the opening songs when i begin to wonder if Howard just looks black on the cds and videos and I was also noticing that Howard's voice must be fried, because his singing really sucks and why is he pointing the mic towards the crowd to do the singing. Hey, I thought Howard was tall, this dude is short and . . .hey, thats not Howard. Before the 4th song the band informs the crowd, howard had to leave the tour for personal reasons. Doh! If I known he wasn't playing with the band I would have stayed home. All in all, the band played great and the Cape was entertaining, killer guitar tones and it was better than staying at home. Go support the band and put up with the replacement singer, they have him down in live mix, after the first couple of songs they turn him down in the mix. lol

Hey, Your Ma, Adams Faggy dancing isnt faggy, It's funny, him and the cape. Adam rocks hard and doent take it serious, hes having a good time, no need to be evil and do Metallica / Korn stage moves, like the Devil and its Prada, now they sucked, the band before them should have played 2ound .

121. writes:
Actually, I thought it was going to suck that Howard had left and Phil would be filling in, but it worked out fine because they focused a lot on some of their more aggressive songs, which fit Phil's voice better, and when songs like My Curse and The End of Heartache, he got help from Adam the guitarist and the crowd. All in all, it was still an incredible performance. Unique and original. The band seemed to have a heightened sense of energy since they knew they had to compensate for the lack of Howard.

You said: "you homo's have sex with eachother". I find this an interesting concept for you to believe. First of all, this is the internet. For all those that have purchased tickets, don't take it as a personal attack. These things do happen from time to time. Yes, it sucks but I would rather see the guy on a slight hiatus rather than push it and do more damage. You have to remember what these guys do for a living. The majority of these guys will probably have chronic back problems as they get older. As for who is better. Yes it is a matter of personal opinion. I like Howard personally. He is every bit as good live as he is in the studio. This is a nice attribute for a lead vocalist or any musician for that matter. As for Phil being crap live, some vocalists can sing like a canary in the studio, but do not have the endurance for a live set. Just putting in my 2 cents worth, and to some, I'm sure that is about all it's worth. I wish Howard a speedy recovery and thanks to Phil for keeping things going.
