Mastodon Plans Deluxe Version Of "Crack The Skye"
Heavy rock iconoclasts MASTODON will release their new album, "Crack the Skye" on March 24, 2009. However, hardcore fans will have the opportunity to pre-order a very special Deluxe Limited “Tunnel Book” Edition of "Crack the Skye" online only via the band’s website.
This super-deluxe version of "Crack the Skye" will come housed in a hard box case featuring a third dimension worm hole design that will contain exclusive and additional album art by long-time Mastodon artist, Paul Romano. The special package will include the full-length "Crack the Skye" album on CD, plus a DVD containing The Making of "Crack the Skye" with photo gallery, track by track band commentary and more by director Jimmy Hubbard.
All pre-orders will also receive a 14” x 14” exclusively designed lithograph unavailable anywhere else. Additionally, those who are first to pre-order will receive the lithograph autographed by the band members themselves. These extraordinary packages will be extremely limited and once they are gone, no further editions will be created so don’t delay. Cost of the Deluxe Limited “Tunnel Book” Edition will be $39.99.
Shortly thereafter, Mastodon will unveil a new online destination designed to bring fans into direct focus on the upcoming new album, "Crack the Skye." Cracktheskye.org will launch the week of Feb 16, and will compliment its existing sibling location of mastodonrocks.com.
The new site will be a flash-based, interactive experience threading fans through an extremely visual, user-controlled cyber journey into the inner sanctum of "Crack the Skye." Content will be thematically based on the album’s concepts, artwork, images, lyrics, videos, and its unique packaging through engaging visuals and music from "Crack the Skye" intended to accompany and enhance the experience of listening to the album in its entirety.
As previously announced, Mastodon will tour Europe with Metallica this summer. In addition, they have been invited to perform as part of the Sonisphere Touring Rock Festival this summer in Europe and the UK with Metallica, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Lamb of God and more.

I have to say, March 24th can't get here fast enough. Really chomping at the bit for this one. I'm pretty geeky about this band as well, guys. I know I'll be playing and re-playing it. Analyzing lyrics and trying to piece together the meaning behind every song. How many bands can you say that about though? I just thank God for Mastodon and Opeth making music I WANT to figure out :)

I'm not even going to abbreviate it...completely Laughing Out Loud to comments 6 & 7. Nice use of Jizz as an adjective Lord Assenfroth. Mastodon's a great band but I'm preaching to the choir. We'll see who gets more time in my player this year, Mastodon or Isis. Jury is out until May (but I know who'll dominate April).

RUBBBBBISHHHHH i just listened to the first 6 tracks........yep the only song released divinations is the best. Guys i am a huge mastodon fan , and i will tell you right now this sounds like a bad version of old alice in chains vs ozzy slowed down........ it's crap . that's what you get when you travel with metallica too long......obviously rubs off!!!!!!! download it off any torrent site and you will agree!

No.
I'm going to resist the download. I WILL buy it. Mastodon is one of the only bands right now that deserve it.
As for you calling them rubbish, listen to the tracks more. Just because it doesn't sound like their other stuff, does NOT mean it's 'RUBBBBBISHHHHH'. Appreciate it for what it is, if you can't do that then you are not a true fan.

I just Pre-order'd the Limited Edition right now. I like my Metal Brutal as Hell and I know that Mastodon doesn't fit into that mold but they're a great band and fun to listen to! The riffs and their song writing is great. Can't wait to get it in the mail!!!

o.k maybe a bit harsh boys but seriously ........... there is no fire anymore from the band. we all love the metal aspect of mastodon and it doesn't contain any of it. the guitar tracks are layed perfect and it's a great production but as a fan of the heavy part of mastodon I'm very confused........ i will listen to it over and over and over again but it won't hit the spot like the WOLF IS LOOSE...... oh and i will buy the Cd anyways but I'm just commenting on what i heard from the silly leaked stuff...........anyways disappointed. oblivion is an awesome song especially the chorus but not the mastodon we have all come to love ! AGAIN stop hanging out with metallica R.I.P 1989

I can understand a love for their heavier stuff. I love it too. But seeing as they have continued to progress and evolve their sound, this album comes as no surprise. Many recent interviews have also proven what I was already expecting from Mastodon. Talking about slower songs with more melody, but still holding onto that diverse and constantly changing song structure which we have all come to know from this band. This should have been foreseen considering it came straight from the mouths of the band themselves.
I suppose my point is this, as a fan who anticipated this stylistic change, I'm actually very pleased. They are a very heavy modern band using elements of classic prog-rock to form a very new but distinct sound. To those who enjoyed the heavier aspects of this band's sound I understand your disappointment completely, but I cannot feel that it wasn't without warning. I can only hope that the new album will have a variable list of tracks for all Mastodon fans to enjoy. As I've stated since day one, however, I will own this the day it's released.
