Dream Theater Working On Tenth Studio Album

Prog metal veterans Dream Theater are currently wrapping up work on their tenth studio album. The band commenced work on the as-yet untitled album—their second for Roadrunner Records, following up 2007's Systematic Chaos—in October of last year.
Drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci are once again producing the CD, while engineer Paul Northfield will mix the record. Roadrunner plans to release the album in early summer upon which the band will immediately embark on a world tour to support it.

I have only heard the first album from this band. It was fuxxin' long and drawn out. They had two albums so far, right??? (sarcasm) Ten albums, hell! This band is so close to power metal - it is not even funny. Rush does it so much better, in my opinion. DT is technical, but sounds like power metal, big time.

Their albums are all different and i think that anyone can find something they like. personally i was introduced to the band with the ToT album and though it was amazing, when i went back and listened to all their older albums i didnt really like them but after listening to all their albums to date, back to back, you really get the full picture. It's not that they cant decide on a style so much as they like to experiment. Its not gay, its eclectic.

I'm a HUGE prog fan and respect what theese guys have done with themselves and for the genre but I've never been a fan of DT.
Theres something so sterile and and clinical about these guys that I just can't get past...This is coming from a fan of Decrepit Birth, Behold...The Arctopus, Blotted Science, Origin, Dillinger, Meshuggah and sooo many other tech savvy bands....
It frustrates me because they're amazing and creative musicians and they're one of the first of their type I'd ever heard. Admittedly, I have a hard time with the vocals though they really work for "Sacrificed Sons"...
I'm ramblin'...
Now Playing: Porcupine Tree - "Voyage 34--Phase 3"

Of course, it is my opinion, but DT is definitely not technical, death metal. Technical power metal..perhaps. Ok, not full on power metal, but, yes, they have elements of power metal. Hell - some people have called Iced Earth power metal. Especially, the last few albums. Yes - Rush is still one of the best LIVE concerts I have ever seen...they are phenomenal.

I agree with you RM? DT has so much talent yet I rarely want to listen to them. The vox are quiet painful to hear, but more importantly I think they are missing some kind of "x" factor. The kind of factor that brings a given album together. Idk know what I'm getting at but it just seems like DT is more focused on how well they can play as oppossed to creating an "album". Bands like Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Riverside, Meshuggah, Pineapple Theif, Yes, 3, and countless other prog bands have that x factor.
Sometimes too many solos can be a bad thing.

PTF - you are not kidding...Alex Lifeson is absolutely a genius on the axe. He is a huge part of why RUSH is such a long-enduring successful band. Every member is extremely talented, of course. The Live show was mind blowing...pyro/animated shorts - practically everything...truly an amazing concert. Have you ever heard the band Lifer? Alex helped produce their one album.

I'm glad that you mentioned Behold...The Arctopus RM?! Love those guys. Especially because I have a nagging voice in my head that says Prog. Bands shouldn't have vocals on every song. These guys don't have vocals at all! I really hope they're (Behold...) working on new material. I enjoy Indricothere quite a bit also.

Strongly suggest checking out "In Absentia" if you like "Fear of a Blank Planet".
If you like that, get "Deadwing"...Also check out "Signify" and "Up the Downstair" after that, if you still like them you need the whole discography. Their first album, "On the Sunday of Life" is the only one I can't recommend without reservations, it's pretty meh.
DeathInEye
Behold blew my mind with "NNCS", and "Skullgrid" absolutely topples "Nano". Great, great, great, band.
Now Playing: Hate Eternal - "Two Demons"

This band should quit playing music.Just who in crikey f*** gives a damn about this band anymore. The singer sounds like a whinning pig being molested by Gene Simmons. The only thing that i can give credit to this band is the Drummer and the guitarist.I rather listen to Fear Factory rather than listen to this horse sh** band.
f*** Dream Theater.
