God Forbid Guitarist Dallas Coyle On Album "Earthsblood": It's "Blowing People's Minds"

GOD FORBID guitarist Dallas Coyle has written the latest entry for his weekly column on MetalSucks, “The Hard R.” This week Dallas talks about the impending release of the new GOD FORBID album "Earthsblood," outlines touring plans for 2009, and takes shots at Internet detractors on Blabbermouth. An excerpt follows:

"I bet a lot of you are wondering why I haven't been doing my blog lately. Well, let me tell you. Our album comes out very soon and I say a LOT of fucked up shit when I'm writing these blogs. I guess it's not as fucked up as what the BlabberBitches say but I guess I can get people all riled up. Maybe they have no lives. Maybe their user name handle is out of date and they just can't change it because their anxiety of being un-"famous" prevents them from doing so. I don't know.

"I slowed down on the blogs for a bunch of reasons. 1) I had a baby. 2) I got a job. 3) I wanted to quiet myself before the album came out so you can pay attention to the music. Of all the shit I say, in the end, none of you would know me if it weren't for God Forbid so I think it's respectful to let GF have the spotlight while the record is set to be released.

"Now that the record is about to come out there's been some press, you've heard some songs and you've seen the artwork. Most of you are probably familiar with the fact that we're touring with Ill Nino in Europe in March, Lamb Of God in the states in April, doing the festivals in Europe in June and doing MAYHEM in July and August. That is a lot of touring. And to the BlabberGrundles who said we're washed up: Yeah, we also got fabric softener with our sick tours... Fuck off.

"How did all this happen? To tell you the truth, I have no fucking clue. I think it might be the fact that the record is blowing people's minds. Or we're a career band and we've always had momentum that is mounting. Or maybe we have friends in very high places. It's gotta be one or all of those things. I'm not too sure but I'll tell you this: I am fucking relieved, I am fucking happy and I am fucking content."

f*** YEAH! Keep up the great work Dallas, Doc, Corey, Byron, & John. I say it all the time, you guys are the most underrated band in metal and have been for years. I don't understand why you guys aren't so much bigger than you already are. Every album you've done has been better than the previous one but I don't know if you guys can top Treason. I'll just have to wait for Feb. 24th to buy Earthsblood. Can't to c u guys w/ LoG and @ Mayhem in the summer. It's gonna be the sh**.

gotta love them. you dont get so much talant coming out of jersey anymore. we've got more hardcore/deathcore/grindcore/horror/gore/breebree/PORNOcore bands than anything else..

actually heard some track off this new album of theirs on a radio station and i actually liked it. I've outgrown this style of music for the most part but i still will give god forbid a listen because, well, i've seen them 3 times and byron is a cool down to earth dude to talk to.

God Forbid is metalcore... whether you consider that metal or not... all I remember of God Forbid (was a long time ago) was generic metalcore and some emo whining in the chorus. My net connection sucks at the moment but maybe I'll give them a second chance.

God Forbid has been pretty solid- as a good band, in my book. Who gives fuxk if they are metalcore?? I certainly don't. Cynic, you always seem to have strong opinions about metalcore...well GF has hardcore vocals too, not just "emo"singing as you state. The backing "emo" melodic vocals are provided by the guitarist. The lead singer don't sing EMO, at all, from all the songs I have heard from God Forbid. Don't get me wrong - I hate sickly sweet melodic vocals...I would much rather hear abrasive, hardcore/rough vocals. It is one of the reasons why I didn't like the new All that Remains album. You don't like metalcore, I think it pretty obvious by this point.

Lead singer doesn't sing "emo" is what I meant. Although, I believe the drummer sings cleanly on most of the cds.

I believe you - my dislike of metalcore is quite well documented on MU, it's just something built into me. Maybe I'll collect my thoughts in my profile some time but until then - imagine that how I feel about metalcore is how you feel about emo.

Without writing a book, can you explain to me what you dislike about Metalcore? I'm mostly curious as to how you come to the vocals being 'emo,' because by tonality standards, his voice is a lower register than most emo vocalists, and it lacks enough 'whine factor' for me to classify it as 'emo.' I can see why certain Metalcore bands leave bad tastes in a mouth, but disregarding the genre seems hasty.

When they play live, all of the singing parts are done in harmony by the guitarists. The most annoying part, in my opinion, is the sound engineer can't get their mics to equal volume. All of the screams are done by Byron, their lead singer.

Txmetalhead- drummer doesn't sing at all, guitarists both do, usually clean.

Cynic- first two discs were def metal core. gone forever was more 1/2 n 1/2. constitution of treason is more metal...my opinion. Go to Youtube and check out "End of the World" live there's a good video on there of them playing live.

personally i don't care about metal genres, if i like the band i like the band.

And for everyone who was questioning the 1488 thing: it is a Neo-Nazi term that has to do with preserving different things and basically keeping minorities and non-christians out of certain activities (in this case metal) and away from (so-called) pure women and children.
To sum it up: 1488 is a racist douche bag.

"personally i don't care about metal genres, if i like the band i like the band." - Well technically I'm the same, except that all the bands I dislike seem to be metalcore.

Hey DeathInEye - I'll have to say it now because I need to pack for a weeklong trip I'm taking starting tomorrow.

First off as I said I was trying to remember what they sound like from a long time ago - emo is a word I use to describe emotional clean vocals which I find particulary whiny and can't relate to in any way. I'm sure there are bands which you get the same sense of insincerity from - maybe Linkin Park or something.

And as I've said before, I've never heard a metalcore band I've liked and heard many, many which I dislike. I dislike metal bands with mallcore or metalcore tinges, I dislike the seminal and popular metalcore bands. I find the musical techniques that I identify as -core watered down and derivitave of the great acts I love. At The Gates is a great example. A truly amazing band I feel, and yet thousands of clones are out there putting out shoddy rippoffs of there sound mixed with breakdowns and musical tactics that could be out of any pop bands repotoire. In any case, if you want to know more you need only look at the hundreds (thousands?) of negative reviews of metalcore bands on the metal archives.

But again as I said, I don't resent people if they like metalcore. Great, go for it and enjoy it. I just dislike the "sheep in wolves clothing" as I like to put it :P I dislike people misnaming metalcore bands as metal to get metal cred. That's infuriating and a massive time waster for me. I've run out of time to write anything more but I'd like to emphaisize the right to listen to whatever music you wish without predjudice - just don't tell me it's thrash metal!

To Cynic - sorry dude - I had a bad day yesterday, and came to MU to chill. I shouldn't have lost my cool like that. Thanks for your explanation. It is cool, and you make a good point, I seem to dislike/have disdain for emo singing/local radio(which I have to listen to everyday on the way to work), just like you have disdain for metalcore. TO BrianSD - thanks for the correction. I knew it was the guitarist, but I didn't realize it was both guitartists.

Cynic - You probably won't read this for a while but I was simply curious as to what you dislike musically about metalcore. I can completely understand the frustration of misrepresentation, but that's not musical. The rip-off issue I can understand to an extent...I'll explain the "extent" later.

But I think we just disagree as to what degree voices sound emo, and that's fine. I just know you like Opeth and Cynic, who both utilize clean vocals that to me, aside from individual biological differences in tonality, don't appear to differ from God Forbid save being of separate genres and technique.

I also have no problem if it bores you, I have no right to take issue with that. It bores me as well after a while, but some days I want straight-forward metal. I have the issue of being the only metalhead in my life so I am inherently one of those people who doesn't know every classic metal band. Granted I do research and try to catch up, which is more than some can say, but I don't recognize rip-offs immediately.

I'll stop there because I feel like I'm making excuses.

Note: I don't mean to say that God Forbid is on the same playing level as Opeth or Cynic, because they're not. Cynic and Opeth are so far above God Forbid, I shame myself for comparing them.
