Portnoy states: "Imagine a Dream Theater album with 'A Change Of Seasons,' 'Octavarium,' 'Learning To Live,' 'Pull Me Under' and 'The Glass Prison'... all on one album... COULD YOU HANDLE IT?? Excited? I sure am!!!!" The album is expected to be released early next year.

How about something NEW all rolled up into one. It is called 'Progressive' for a reason. Not 'Stagnant'. Sure, the last album had a bit of a heavier edge than it's predecessors, but come on! If these guys are considered some of, if not THE BEST rock/metal/ musicians in the world, then lets have something that'll redefine this area of the music and really WOW the listeners.

As much as I respect Dream Theatre, I have to agree with Jaowel. There are many bands that are called or call themselves progressive. While many have earned that title, (as I feel Dream Theatre have) I feel too many fall into a comfortable rut when they find a signature sound. Pink Floyd and Rush to name a couple others. These bands are personal heroes of mine, so this is in no way an attack on them. I would just like to see new ground being broken, music to make me have to skip back to re-listen and grab my friends and say "Did you just hear that? Holy Hell!" I know it's not easy, believe me. But I'd like to see this group of talented musicians move into new ways of playing, while retaining their edge.

^dont you bring your semanticizing f***-speak in this damn thread, you stay in the deicide thread with that mind-f***ery lol just kidding.
I think progressive gets thrown around too much as a genre label. It seems all a band has to do is do something a little bit different from the norm, and they get labeled progressive, regardless of whether they actually "progress".
In fact, i don't even think it should be a credible term, like "speed metal" because it could actually be applied to almost anything. I would most certaintly call bands like Gojira and Meshuggah prog, but so too would I call Lamb of God prog, because they change drastically from album to album, essentially progressing to a new stage in the band's sound. You see the problem in using the term?
Now Playing: Eminem- Kim

Haha I find it hilarious that the "semanticizing" is happening on a Deicide thread and not on a thread about a stereotypically more intelligent genre.
But, yes, I see your dilemma. I agree, even. I was simply curious if I had viewed the term incorrectly this whole time.

I think when it comes to genres, you have to understand them as being made of fixed, specified concepts. The label 'progressive', rather than meaning the sound progresses from album to album, tends to mean that the sound progresses within a song, changing style, tempo, time signatures, that sort of thing. In that way, the 'progressive' genre is much like the 'post-metal' genre, the 'death metal' genre and so on. It is defined by song structure and such, rather than album structure and sound variation across albums. That said, it IS possible to be progressive with the progressive genre. I think that's what you guys mean: to start with the general ideas and stylings of the progressive genre, and experiment with those. To progress through and from the progressive definitions. But what would you call that? Post-progressive? Seems like we're getting a bit TOO caught up in our 'labels' to me.

^I'm still not even sure I completely understand what it means either though. The only term i can think of that's more vague is "Alternative" What the hell is "OTHER" music supposed to be? Huh?
Actually the only bands i can think of that are generally labeled prog are Meshuggah, Gojira, Opeth and Dream Theater. I can't think of anybody else I listen to that has the same common sound those four bands embody.
oh, and I don't know why, but the phrase "sterotypically more intelligent" had me giggling like a schoolgirl. maybe it's the booze. :P

Oh, well psythe posted at the same time as me, so my comment was directed at deathineye, but some of my confusion was cleared up anyway after reading his(pythe) post, so lucky me. :p
Now Playing: Gojira- The way of all flesh( I'm probably gonna hit skip halfay through this damn song; 17 minutes is way too long for a track of music, no matter how beautiful or complex it is. I draw the line at about ten minutes, or rather, my attention span does...)

17 minutes has to be a GOOD song for me not to get bored with it after a while. John Butler Trio have one that goes for about that, and I love the first few minutes, but I just skip it most of the time. Depends on the type of music, too though, I couldn't listen to a 17 minute Cannibal Corpse song (as epic as that would be), but Porcupine Tree make it easy.
Now Playing: The Rolling Stones - "Angie"

Opeth and Porcupine Tree are 2 bands that really stick out when talking "prog". Both are very good. Opeth has been my favorite band for years now.
And I meant the utmost respect for Dream Theatre in my post. Just don't want them to get stagnant. Their last couple albums have gotten a bit harder, Id like to see them keep expanding their sound and exploring new territory.

I'm glad to hear Porcupine Tree get some credit with some posts. A first album to start with would have to be "In Absentia". After that album, go with "Deadwing" and "Fear of a Blank Planet". After those three if you like softer and more psychedelic stuff go through their earlier albums like "Signify" or "The Sky Moves Sideways."
This band is really amazing on so many levels. The fact that my mother can listen to them and be the same band mentioned on this website with good credit given is pretty amazing. They have experimented with lots of genre's of music, the production to their albums is outstanding, the music and lyrics are both great. Both times I saw them live the performances were very different (not many bands change from concert to concert).
lol I could go on and on.
A note on Dream Theater; I liked a few on their albums but overall their music is not impressive to me. No doubt about it they are all really talented. Each memeber kicks a$$ musicly, but their music as a whole is just "meh". I don't enjoy listening to bands who just constently solo for the sake of soloing. Musicly it seems immature. Anyone agree?
