Tool Opens Up In Their Longest, Most Revealing Interview

Elusive art-rockers Tool recently opened up in an exclusive interview with veteran journalist Bryan Reesman (www.bryanreesman.com). The seven-page cover story spearheads the relaunch issue of Metal Edge magazine (www.metaledgemag.com) and, according to the band itself, is the longest in their 17-year history.

Reesman, who has written for the New York Times, Playboy, and Billboard, spent two hours backstage cross-examining all four members of the multi-platinum group about their music and individual personalities, capturing the animated interplay between the usually secretive musicians.

Frontman Maynard James Keenan sounds off on Hollywood studio shenanigans and his love for painfully bad movies, guitarist Adam Jones addresses being labeled "difficult" and surfing with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, bassist Justin Chancellor discusses sailing and his store Lobal Orning, and drummer Danny Carey talks about his occult interests and playing celebrity basketball. The group also banters about pranking each other, what they really think of Keenan's wine, and far-flung Tool rumors, including cannibalism.

Tool on media manipulation:

Metal Edge: You don’t seem to mind if you rile up the media.

Carey: A lot of times we don’t even have to do it. It just does it itself. All these rumors… We’ve all died in car wrecks by now.

Keenan: Howard Stern has been keeping me out of his studio for years. I’m not even in New York, and he’s talking about how I’m in the lobby, wanting to come up to talk to him, and he says, “Get that guy outta here!” And I’m in L.A.

Jones: It also reflects – at least from my perspective – how sensationalized the media is that you can f**k back with that. You can do your own little spin on stuff back to the media.

Chancellor: It kind of protects the music as well. It’s like a distraction. People can think about all this rubbish, and in the meantime we can concentrate on doing music. It’s like a smoke screen.

Jones: It’s so funny that people say that the Tool guys are difficult. We’re not difficult. We’re just not going to put up with the journalistic dogma of “build you up, chop you down”. There are a lot of journalists who don't [care]. They’re just trying to get their next paycheck, and they’ll spin it any way the magazine wants them to spin it.

The September 2007 issue of Metal Edge is currently available on newsstands nationwide.

So I'm guessing one more album from them and then that will most likely be the end. I mean nothing against Tool, but we all know how amazing they are, yet since we must wait so long for an album there are plently of other amazing bands that we can enjoy and new bands to discover. So, by the time it takes them to put out something new most Tool fans like myself go "oh...sweet" and thats about it, which is disapointing.

Still I got to see them live before its to late!

Regardless if Tool does another album or not, they are an amazing band, that takes music beyond the borders of the modern industry. So many people get stuck in this rut of creating albums that they think is unique and stands out from the rest of everything else, when it really falls under the same, drop D, scream your guts out, hail satan crap. In my opinion anyways. And Tool exceeds all expectations of great musicianship. When it comes to the media, and what it sounds like from Tools interview, the media and it's audience tend to be so blinded by the limelight of the industry. Tool can, as they said, hide behind the smoke screen. It gives them the chance to create masterpieces, and aswell, make fun of the media. Anybody who constanly fights to be in the spotlight, like most pop artists, will die out quickly. Those artists can easily be recreated. But not Tool. They can keep away from all the junk that is put out there, and while they do that, they can be themselves, and in the mean time, make fun of all those who fall under impact of the media. They are unique in every possible way, and that is why Tool will be a legend. Unlike all this new rock that seems to just repeat itself, album after album, band after band. It all sounds the same.

Maynard is a Narcisist, his p***s is so small he has to f**k chicks up the a$$ just to get off!!
He likes to f**k fat ugly chicks and asians because he is such a control freak they do what he says!!
He knows sh** about wine, he has to employ people just to make it for him, GO TO SCHOOL YOU JERK!! What does touring around the world and drinking wine in expensive eateries make him a master of the art??? I think not. If you buy his wines then as he would say in his patronising way " YOU ARE ALL SHEEP"
Dont get sucked into his crap. His Puscifer attempts are like 5 years of the mark it sounds like sh** that should have been released years ago, its a bad attempt of ripping of the Crystal Method. NOT RnB!!
He is a middle aged man that is trying to keep up with today and is not actually hitting the mark. Maynard retire to Jerome and stay there and do the world a favour old man.
