"some music was meant to stay underground..."

Just For Fun

How Underground Are Your Music Tastes?

You've got to be a Last.fm user to participate in this one. Recently there was a tool released called the Mainstream-O-Meter that looks at your music listening habits (top 30 most listened to artists) and calculates how mainstream your tastes are based on how many other Last.fm users listen to the same artists. The formula is well thought-out, although likely far from perfect based on the user samples and sampling of music played only at users' computers, but let's run with it just for fun.

The resulting score is a percentage representing how mainstream your musical tastes are. One could therefore infer that the difference would represent how underground your music tastes are.

Take my stats for instance: If I'm only 6% mainstream, I would be 94% underground. How underground are you?

If you have a Last.fm account and have not joined the Metal Underground Last.fm group, please do so.

My rulebook says you lose by default because you're most listened to band is Christian Metalcore lol. Listening to underground music is a b**** sometimes, half of the bands I'm listening to most at the moment (Alcest, Amesoeurs, Loss, Thorr's Hammer, Exivious) have only released demos, EPs or splits - I want more damn it! If I had one of these thingys it would probably be quite low because I rarely listen to Slayer, Pantera, Tool anymore because I've played them to death in years gone. I had to buy Lateralus again because the CD was so worn.

This just shows how lame the average "metal" listener is, or at least the average 'metal' listener on this website. You are competing on some ridiculous website to show just how 'tr00' you are.

Since when is listening to metal a competition to be won? Perhaps when you become a little more mature you will realise that all you are doing is playing up to a stereotype, and a cheap one at that.

And no you aren't just doing this for fun or for laughs as I'm sure the impending responses will imply. Regardless of what you intimate, you are still doing this to gauge your 'metalless' against the others who frequent this site.

Get some perspective, it is little more than a pathetic pissing contest.

On the contrary, Mr. Lame, some people can actually do something "for the fun of it." I would speak for myself, but why bother when you seem to be able to speak for everyone else here? I'm sure (as sure as you are about your own generalizations) that you cannot take anything lightly. You surely ridcule anything that is not true metal and find no merit to anything remotely lighthearted or fun in metal (spoofs or anything covered on this site's "just for fun" category).

Personally, I enjoy the comparisons out of plain curiosity. Last.fm and social media are great for sharing musical tastes, and this article is nothing more than a facilitator of that goal.

This is a really stupid idea. "How underground are you?" You either like 'undeground' music or you don't. This is pretty stupid since underground really doesn't exist anymore. This is just goign to mean a bunch of trendwhores and mallcore kids digging up obscure music and playing it to get scene points for beign 'underground'. Please stop this bullsh**.

Manowar died along with all the other old school metal bands - nothing can possibly be considered truly underground anymore. People pay out "punks" and "emos" for thinking that they're so different from anyone else, but really the people paying out people who listen to "trendy" music are just as much trendwhores as them. That's right - I just called you as bad as an emo. Shame. Just enjoy the goddamn music, it's not about your image. I could pretty much guarantee that I'd be like 80% mainstream. Well, maybe not that much but pretty damn close.

I said this would happen and they just keep doign it liek morons. This trendwhore here, Murderface, went on the internet and looked for some obscure bands so he could could get scene points for being 'underground'. Thrash metal is unique in that when thrash bands are obscure it generally means they suck. Most of the bands he put are pretty bad, only some average ones. I wonder how many scene points he got for this. He probably only found out metal existed from Metalocalypse. That show is not an accurate representation of metal. It clearly is somebody looking in from the outside who doesn't understand what metal is. You are nothing but a stupid trend-following fag that needs to die.

I've always loved the metal popularity paradox: The fewer people that know my band the cooler, smarter and more respectable I am. Total opposite of the world at large -- it's the same kind of dumb, but in reverse.

Brilliant.

On a similar note
People are too sensitive. If it's listed under "Just for Fun": Enter at your own f***ing risk. The band or music philosophy you enjoy may be the butt of a joke. Thicken thou skin sir.

It wouldnt be hard for me to dig through my mp3's and come up with 30 bands that are completely off the radar. Since Devil Driver and Vader are pulling about 4-5% I'd be absolutely stunned if I cleared 3% average if I focused only on obscure acts.

The truth of the matter is I also enjoy many well known acts. Tool, Pantera and Metallica would severely tilt my average despite Zyklon, Mumakil, Obituary, Hate Eternal, Cynic and Behemoth being unknown to the overwhelming majority of the world.

Wow, This is Stupid, I can see you and I have a problem here. First of all, I did not go online to look for obscure bands so I could get "scene" points. Second of all, I didn't discover Metal by watching Metalocalypse. Third of all, I bet you have never even heard of those bands that I listed, two of which aren't even Metal bands. It might be best for you to think before you type next time, sh** for brains.

what i find interesting is that everyone equates "being underground" to "being metal". there are many local alternative/pop/emo/nonmetal bands in my area that no ones ever heard of. and they all suck severely. my point is that i could only listen to a bunch of unsigned pop bands and still appear to be "extreme underground". so it is in this way, that being -7% mainstream can be misleading.

as for those complaining about why this is even here, what's the big deal? if i was last.fm member i would do this just for fun.

I think despite constantly rotating obscure bands like Loss and the one's I mentioned before I'd be pulled up by the fact I listen to a bit of David Bowie and Radiohead.

This is Stupid, I laugh at you, ahahaha. The purpose of the underground is to and to share metal with other people who's tastes aren't mainstream. For example - thanks Murderface! There were a few promising bands their that I hadn't heard of. Grotesque/Early ATG and Electric Wizard are some of my favs. As for bands that purposefully stay underground because of their ideologies, a big meh to them. You want underground? Well that's if you're describing the genre's as underground, I think most people are talking about notoriety (ie Burzum's a massive band). Funny though, you're listening to some of the stuff I am (metalwise) at the moment, Boris, Sigh, Ulver, and of course Cynic, but I honestly wouldn't call them underground, maybe Sigh (not that I'm making claims to some sort of definition here apart from popularity).
