Rick Rubin's Move To Columbia Records Is Official

Producer RICK RUBIN's move to Columbia Records is now official, although there are no details yet on what Rubin's exact role at the label will be or where he will be based. The label released a statement this afternoon (May 14) confirming the Rubin hire and stating that he would "form a dynamic and creative executive partnership" with Columbia chairman Steve Barnett, under a new model devised by Sony Music topper Rob Stringer. As part of the deal, Rubin will bring his American Recordings imprint to the company, which previously distributed it in the late '90s and early '00s. American, which for the last year-plus has been distributed by Warner Music Group, has a roster that includes SLAYER and catalog including THE BLACK CROWES, DANZIG. As expected, in addition to producing albums for Sony BMG acts, Rubin will continue his producing activities for artists at other major labels. In this capacity he will work with artists signed to Warner Bros., including METALLICA.

Linkin Park were always sh** and some of their pre- Rubin songs were pretty emo anyway. Whether you like Rubin or not though the man is one of the greatest producers the world has ever seen. If you can produce a classic rap album (Licensed To Ill) a year after producing a classic thrash album (Reign In Blood) then you earn your respect instantly in my books.

There's no thrash in Linkin Park whatsoever. I've heard all the LP singles of course and I've been round mates houses who like LP and have played entire albums to me. Gave them a shot, don't like 'em, that's fair no? I think the rapping is crap and the music is average and the screaming doesn't work.

People often say they're into thrash but in reality their knowledge goes nowhere past the big 4 and 'Pantera'. There are countless awesome thrash bands though that are hardly ever mentioned, Xentrix, Exumer, Mortal Sin, Rigor Mortis, Anacrusis etc. though we better not start listing thrash bands any or we'll be here all day.

As far as I'm concerned, Rick Rubin can suck my c0ck because he jilted Slayer for Metallica. He may have produced Reign in Blood and Licensed to Ill, but that doesn't make the guy god's gift to music. I mean, his beard is cool, but that's as far as my appreciation for him goes. I'd rather prop up Joe Barresi before I kiss Rubin's ass.

@CTJJ - Lol, you're a f***ing jerk, not sure what's with the hostility but you might have noticed (probably not since all you do is complain) that good conversations can actually occur (I know!) where people can learn about new bands. sh**, I've discovered heaps of new stuff (Mortal Sin included) from chatting with people here. As for Rubin, I'm sure he's a good choice for Metallica compared to Bob Rock but my hat is tipped to Scott Burns and Morrisound studios, that dry death metal sound to me beats Rubin. Though he also did RHCP's BSSM so he's done some pretty killer work.

Secondly, I find it very hard to believe that you have wider musical horizons than I do, especially if you consider Linkin Park a good band. They may have had some catchy tunes, but how many times did you listen to their songs? Like 10 times maybe? They don't stand the test of time, and their music is simple and really doesn't have anything to grab ahold of. I have enjoyed their music in the past, but I would still not have ever considered them a good band. You don't have to be a good band to write songs that people will listen to. It's all about timing, and that's the only reason anyone has ever even heard of Linkin Park.

DeathInEye, producers do alot more than that though, alot of organisation and knowledge to do with getting the right sound for your band. Coaching a band's direction along is a small part of what they do, it's more to do with constructing the sound the band wants.

I have complete confidence in Rubin to get Metallica back on track. I think he'll do a really good job where even if the album isn't like "Oh my god this is the most mind blowing music ever!" he'll defintely help them come out with an album that makes people go "Ahh! Yeah fair enough, bit of a misunderstanding then. You get alot more people on your side if you post like that rather than throw insults at them. There was a time when I loved LP, I remember being about 12/13 and hearing the song "One Step Closer" and I remember feeling just how different and exciting the music was (skipped the whole Korn thing I guess). I went to school and low and behold one of my best friends and bandmate had their CD which we used to listen to. Didn't take long for me to progress too... less mainstream music though through Metallica and Tool though. Best LP song? In the joke track "The Wizard Song" there's a few lines, "Send me your power, with the lightning in your eyes" or something, now that's a band I'd listen to.
