Korn's Jonathan Davis A 'Guitar Hero' Convert

Band Photo: Korn (?)
Launch Radio Networks reports: You would think a video game in which players use a guitar would have no appeal to a professional musician, but for KORN lead singer Jonathan Davis, that's just not the case. Davis told Launch he's become addicted to Guitar Hero, a video game that asks participants to play along in time to various rock tracks from the '70s through today. "I do love it," he said. "I think it's an awesome game, and it's so challenging once you start getting up to higher levels. Some of the s***'s harder than playing guitar."
KORN is currently recording its eighth studio album and plans to release it this summer.
The band will then headline the 2007 Family Values tour starting in mid-July in support of the album. EVANESCENCE, HELLYEAH, ATREYU, TRIVIUM and FLYLEAF are also on the bill.
Guitar Hero 2 for the Xbox 360 gaming system was released last week. The Playstation 2 version was released in November. The game features tracks from GUNS N' ROSES, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, NIRVANA, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, WOLFMOTHER, ALICE IN CHAINS, FOO FIGHTERS, and many more.

first off, of course Jon Davis would say its harder than actual guitar, Korn is a band that doesn't challenge their skills (or lack thereov?) enough anyway.
slayerdisciple, I beg to differ, I don't see how it helps guitarists...Studies show that it helps bassists more than guitarists though (I don't know how that works, but whatever, apart from using more pressure with your fingers, bass is easy)...I play it, and to be honest, I'd rather play real guitar. But thats just me I guess...
I don't see how a mock guitar controller with 5 buttons is more challenging...I was playing it once, and I was actually trying to actually use the correct fretting for a song once on the 'guitar'. Thats what kinda turned me off

It helps people who don't have a lot of actual gutar experience, I think. It does get the fingers and hand working in coordination, and if nothing else, spurs interest in playing an actual guitar.
I'm pretty good at Guitar Hero, but I know I still suck at guitar...

This game just helps with finger exercise and coordination. But some of the stuff on the game is harder than the real songs on the guitar. I just think it's a fun game but I wouldn't relate it at all to playing the real guitar because it only has 5 buttons. The main riff on Cowboys From Hell is a lot easier on the real guitar! lol

It helps bassists more because so much of the game rests on fret awareness, single note playing and even a little root progression.
I tried to play "The Light that Blinds" (med-expert) while full of whiskey and in the company of friend(all but one play one or more instruements) and it was embarrassing. That song beat the sh** out of me and I can play many parts of that song on bass. I'm impressed with that game, much of the music sucks and the vocals are pretty weak renditions....but fun overall if nothing else.

Wow, speaking of G-Hero, I had a stupid dream about it last night. Then it turned into this NASTY dream. My vision turned all red, and I remember some dude said to me, " I'LL SLIT YOUR f***ING THROAT!" Well, I grabbed a shard of metal and stabbed him. Then I woke up. Thank you for your time.

I'm actually not bad at The Light That Blinds. I used to not be able to get passed the 1st beginning speed picking when it goes all the way up and back down but I got better at that and the part in the solo where it's all over the f***ing place. I'm not bad at it now. Is anyone else unable to play that game the best when sitting down? My hand gets cramped and I'm just not as good. And the vocals in a lot of the songs are so bad. Especially Laid to Rest! OMG, just horrible.

I figured you'd have to pay but I think they would make more money if they didn't do that and sold just the game on disc. A good example of that would be iTunes and selling individual songs. The artist may only sell their single instead of the whole album and not make as much money. I'm sure they know what they're doing though. People still have to buy the game, have the system, and have the guitars in order to do it anyway.

Yeah slayerdisciple, its pretty easy *attempts to tab 'Cowboys From Hell'* (Okay, long and short of it, this is my first time ever trying to tab ANYTHING, but those are the right frets, and I added '/' and '\' as frets you slide up and down to....*crosses fingers* You should get the idea)
BASIC MELODY(standard E tuning)
6~~--0--3--0--3--5--3--5--3--6--3--5--3--5/7--------|~|--0--3--0--3--5--3--5--3--6--5--3--0

3~~------------------------------------------------------------|~|---------------------------------------------
2~~------------------------------------------------------------|~|---------------------------------------------

6~~0--0--0--0--0--0--0--5/7------|~|--0--0--0--0--3--5/6\5\3--5/6\5\3--(you gotta slide the frets real fast, but its...
5~~---------------------------------5--|~|---------------------------------------------...really easy to do)
4~~-------------------------------------|~|---------------------------------------------
3~~-------------------------------------|~|---------------------------------------------
2~~-------------------------------------|~|---------------------------------------------

Sorry the tab is wrong. I have the tab book. and you set the tab up the wrong way.

|----------------------------------------7-|
|----5----5-7-5-7-5-8-5-7-5-8h9---|
|-7---7-----------------------------------|

And the second lines fill is wrong too, in it's place it should be (I didn't bother putting in the zeros):
|--------------|---------------------------------|
|--------------|---------------------------------|
|--------------|---------------------------------|
|-----------0-|---------------------------------|
|-0h1h2----|-0h1p0--------0h1p0-------|
|--------------|-----------3-3------------3-0-|
Good attempt though!

The way that I have it is how most tabs are written. Go check out ultimate-guitar.com and they have tons of tabs. You'll be able to get tons of tabs for free. Just keep in mind a lot of them were figured out by people and then tabbed. Look at the rating that it has on the tab. I bet for Cowboys From Hell there's probably like 15 different versions. This songs has been transcribed many times though and I have a few copies of it and they're all like how I transcribed it. And to answer your question yeah it is the other way around from the way you had it. What some people do instead of 1-6 they'll put the tuning of the strings like this:
E |---|
B |---|
G |---|
D |---|
A |---|
E |---|
32. writes:
OK, 2 things - The main riff of Cowboys from Hell is in no way easy if your playing it right. It was difficult enough for Dime to play the riff once and loop it in the recording of the song. Hell, the solo's easier than that damn riff.
And the definitive way of playing it is...(did my best with out a monospaced font)
E |-------------------------------------------------------|
B |-------------------------------------------------------|
G |-------------------------------------------------------|
D |----------------2---2--------------------0-----------|
A |-2------2-----0---0---1----0---1h2---------------|
E |-0--3--0--3----3---3---3---3----------------------|
PM -------------------------------|
An easier way is to not play the powerchord, just the root.
An even cheaper way is to just play the root notes, and all on one string. You won't get that sweet chunk but at least it's a start.
BTW, I can't see why anyone would need any other resource than the powertabs at ultimate-guitar.com, they're the final word in accuracy and with playback to boot.
Now playing: Radiohead "Knives Out"

There are two different main riffs that are similiar but one is down low. You're right that one is hard but the one I tabbed is played in the song too. They're both played at different times. the one that I tabbed is the first played in the beginning of the song and later on and then this one is after that one. It's too hard to explain! lol they're both in the song. Dude just go to ultimate-guitar.com, you can use the tabs or guitar pro. I use both. When using guitar pro if the tab is right then you'll make sure you're hitting that f***er right on that head.

I actually got Guitar Pro for free from Threat Signal! lol They're auditioning guitarists right now and they the software along with the tabs for two of their songs and the code for Guitar Pro on the internet so I downloaded it. Their songs are fast as f*** to play. Unfortunately you do have to pay for it though. They might have a free trial thing though.

I've been playing bass for close to 12 years now, been in a few gigging bands, and can play a good number of the songs from GH (and GH2) in real life, and I think if you already know how to play the songs, the game can mess you up. I'm trying to play the little fills like I would on the bass, or a quick triplet, and the controller switch isn't fast enough to keep up on the harder difficulties. I definitely don't think it has any positive effect on my playing.
You can get a trial version of Guitar Pro for free, but the full version is kinda expensive, if you acquire it legally. I've got it and love it.

I wouldn't neglect your real guitar playing for this game for too long. My problem is when I try to play the game I keep trying to play like a real guitar which f***s me up, and when I try to play guitar I try to play it like the game if I have stuck with one for too long and neglected the other. So they don't completely go hand in hand.
