Sepultura to Cease Using Name After Current Tour?

In a brand new interview with the Brazilian newspaper O Estado de São Paulo, former SEPULTURA drummer Igor "Iggor" Cavalera is quoted as saying that he and the current SEPULTURA members have come to an agreement that the name SEPULTURA can only be used until the end of band's current "Dante XXI" touring cycle. However, in the same article, the group's bassist, Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr., denies that any such agreement was ever made.
Speaking to BLABBERMOUTH.NET back on June 13, 2006, Igor was asked if, in his opinion, SEPULTURA should go on without either of the Cavalera brothers in the lineup. "I don't have the right to say whether it should exist, or if it should go on, since I left the band," he said. "I think if it was like, if they threw me out of the band, or if it was like a fight, or if it was a different situation, I could have a different opinion, as far as continuing or not continuing. But as far as the way I see it [now], I think it's really up to them if they want to continue or if they wanna stop with SEPULTURA." Asked if he would try to stop the remaining SEPULTURA members if they tried to continue and record a new album under the SEPULTURA name with a different drummer, Igor said, "No, not at all."
SEPULTURA played their first official show in their home country with the group's new drummer, Jean Dolabella (ex-UDORA), on August 5 at the Circo Voador in Rio de Janeiro.
Igor announced earlier in the year that he was taking a break from the group's touring activities to spend time with his second wife and their new son (who was born in January). Filling in on drums during the band's European tour with IN FLAMES was Roy Mayorga, who played with Igor's brother Max in SOULFLY for several years in the late '90s and again in 2001-2003.
Igor is the second Cavalera to leave SEPULTURA. In 1996, Max Cavalera exited the group after the rest of the band fired Max's wife Gloria as SEPULTURA's manager.

The name needs to be changed. The band is no longer Sep, nor has been for quite some time, really. And I seriously doubt that Igor or Max would rejoin the band; reunite for a one-off show or something, maybe, but they won't rejoin.
A new Igor/Max project could be cool, for sure.

i agree it's not the same with out max and igor, but they've been using the name for a long time now without them, and it would be weird changing it now. If they were going to change it they should have when Igor left. If they change the name it also wouldnt be right for igor and max to join up and re-create the band, becasue it still woundt be the same.

i dont think that sepultura's name needs to be changed, i think that sepultura needs to be disbanded altogether. if the other remaining members want to continue making music, then i think that they should form a new band altogether. as harsh as that sounds, it would be like if james and lars quit metallica and then kirk and robert decided to keep the name and continue. i do agree that sepultura hasnt been the same since max left, but at least the other founder was still there.

Perhaps, but if you look at Napalm Death, there are NO original members in the current line up whatsoever and they are making better music than ever (in my opinion). However, unlike Napalm, Sepultura seems to have more of a connection with the past members and fans I think. I don't believe the new drummer will be made very welcome by international fans. So yeah, I don't really know where I stand on this one but I think it would be better if they changed the name.

Psythe - I think that the Igor / Max thing would be a great fix for Soulfly. I mean, Soulfly's line up is constantly changing with the exception of Max. Just maybe Igor could add a touch more stability to the band... Having gone through 6 members (plus the 3 current members = 9) in 8 years isn't much of a track record, if you know what I'm saying. Max is the only stable thing in that band.
In regards to the news: Sepultura should definitely change the name, so as to avoid ruining a damn good bands name and further tarnishing a legacy.

red devil, here again you pathetic waste of life? seputura is no more. the remaining members should now that. but its kind of like zao ( i know there isnt many here who like them, but is just an example) there is no original members left but they made the best album in the band's career two years ago and they moved in a completely better direction than the original zao. im not saying that sepultura is gonna turn around and do the same, but they are still a part in the history of sepultura. so what im trying to say is that is should really be up to them, not the cavaleras, to determine if they drop the name or not. even if they dont, we all can agree that this is a different sepultura than the one that once existed.

I'd like to see Max and Igor rejoin Sepultura. That probably won't happen though. So, I'd like to see Max and Igor start a new band. BLEED BLACK LABEL!!!!
