"Real" Supernova Sues "Rock Star: Supernova" Producers, Bandmembers

Chris Harris of MTV.com is reporting that nine days before the July 5 broadcast premiere of Mark Burnett's "Rock Star: Supernova" on CBS, the three members of Orange County, California, punk trio SUPERNOVA — who formed back in 1989 and released four albums, including 2000's "Pop as a Weapon" — filed a lawsuit against the show's producers, charging trademark infringement.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Diego, names Mark Burnett Productions, Rockstar Entertainment Inc. and CBS Broadcasting as defendants, along with Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted and Gilby Clarke — the three future members of the group this season's "Rock Star" is supposed to spawn and endow with a lead singer. After someone's chosen to front the band, the foursome will eventually record and release fresh material before touring the nation, all under the SUPERNOVA moniker.

Well they apparently knew of the previous incarnation of Supernova when picking the name too. Maybe they'll have to pull that horrible show off the air. I really expected more, but VH1's Supergroup was infinitely more entertaining (and it wasn't that great).

hey LV rocker- the trademark you are showing in your comment is for "Rockstar:Supernova" not "Supernova", big difference. If you keep looking, there is a trademark for "Supernova" owned by Dave Collins, drummer of the real supernova. Also, due to the release of their CDs over the years they have common-law trademark rights.

CBS viewers aren't going to want to follow the band if they don't have a super traditional singer...I mean, wheres all the dollar signs in someone doing death/black metal????

Jason Newstead is doing this because he is bored, or because Echobrain has sold 9 copies...Maybe a higher profile will expose people to Voivod...I dunno.

This singer is going to be a Freddy Mecury or Axl Rose clone...maybe like that chubby faced guy from MCR... emo sounding....

I'm betting it will be some painful facsimile of David Lee Roth....

The real one is terrible enough, but their going to get a guy in his late 20's with a god complex whose "hot for teacher"and warms the hearts of all those housewives who are hitting the worst stages of menopause.....ah ratings.
