Here are some juicy bits from InterSandman.com about the latest Metallica issues:

John Brandon, author of the Alice In Chains book 'Unchained' stated on the WKRK Radio in Detroit that according to his sources, Mike Inez has not been approached to play bass for Metallica, and that he doubts this will happen.

And the followup on Jason Newsted:

According to Hardradio.com Newsted's side project Echobrain may release there debut album in August.
