Latest Album May Be Strapping Young Lad's Last

Band Photo: Strapping Young Lad (?)

Niko Kaartinen of Finland's Imperiumi webzine recently conducted an interview with STRAPPING YOUNG LAD mastermind Devin Townsend. A few excerpts from the chat follow (translated from Finnish by Mike Portnoy forum member "tommidt"):

Imperiumi: "The New Black" is STRAPPING YOUNG LAD's fifth and final record for Century Media. Is this the last record of SYL's career?

Devin: "I hope so. I believe so. I signed a five-album deal with Century Media and this is now the fifth. There you have five records; they are very happy with that and I've done my job. Next! (laughs)"

Imperiumi: What did the Century Media people think when you told them that you were going to take rest of the year off be with your family? Wouldn't this be the best time to promote SYL [seeing as you have a new record coming out]?

Devin: "Well, this might get me in trouble, but I couldn't care less. Should I be on tour while I have a newborn baby at home? My wife is pregnant, so should I be far from home drinking booze and pretending that I care about heavy metal? In how many different ways I can say that I don't care? In how many ways I can say that I'm through with this thing? I said I'd make five records, [and] I did them. We are now doing a European tour, playing some big shows. Fine. We'll do Ozzfest; those are big shows too. We don't need anything else, in my opinion. . . You can keep 'The New Black', I don't care anymore. Keep the rights to the band, do what you want. I don't care anymore, and I think it is just stupid. The manager, the band and record company look at me now just like I am the enemy, because I feel this way. But what can you do? You can't just keep going like this anymore. I have done this for a several years now."

Imperiumi: But still, it is about your life. You want to be able to control it.

Devin: "Exactly, if you are not able to control it, you are wasted. You'll end up being a junkie or an alcoholic who ends up cheating your wife. Or you'll end up a fake rock star, thinking you actually are one."

Imperiumi: Is the the gap between SYL and your solo material becoming closer?

Devin: "It feels like I'm less and less angry all the time. Even THE DEVIN TOWNSEND BAND will put out softer stuff in the future, so the SYL material feels even harder now compared to my solo material. My next recordings will probably be something like this (points out the beautiful nature of Finland's Provinssirock festival), something [representing] beautiful scenery. Beautiful things. I don't have to be hard/tough (heavy) anymore. I'm 34 years old, I'm already old."

Imperiumi: How do you want SYL to be remembered?

Devin: "As a big middle finger! How else?"

Imperiumi: Does Gene (Hoglan, SYL drummer) know yet that this is the last record?

Devin: "Umm... I don't know. I don't think anyone knows that. I just HOPE this is the last one, because I don't have anything to say with this band anymore. Who knows what the future will bring? Now I just hope that I can do other things."

This sorta took the wind out of my sails today......

I know Townsend is prone to saying and doing erratic things from time to time in interviews and performances where he later explains things away as being in an odd place emotionally or mentally, but this seems pretty serious.

Things will be a little less fun without SYL around. I hope they come through my city one last time.

i believe that this may be a good move on his part, as horrible as it is to say.....if they quit now they leave a legacy of 4 unbelievable albums and one very good one.....how many other bands should have quit before going on to make 4,5, even 6 terrible albums. bottom line is that remember metal is right, it is sad, but they leave a legacy in metal that has rarely been seen with their creative and sonic individuality as a band playing aggressive as f*** metal......Great band

Devin Townsend is a smart musician, and as much as it sucks, if he doesnt want to do metal anymore, why force him? sure it will piss a lot of people off, but if he's not in the right place to make the music, then its just not even worth it when it lacks the heart.

heh, who else is predicting a nausiating wave of "tribute" songs and albums - we all know syl deserves tribute. but i mostly dislike tribute albums.

HevyDevy is a legend, whether this is the end of that (syl-wise) or not. He'll definitely be remembered as a metal hero, and frankly, I hope he keeps kicking arse with his solo outfit, because he's got some amazing music coming out of that, too.

I knew Townsend had some temporary meltdowns....Nice to know this is probably one of em... it's good to hear all is well/better.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I read the Finnish interview. True, Dev is burnt out, and of course he can change his mind quicker than bolt of lightning, but, just 2 days ago, he and I were talking about the next SYL record, what we're gonna do on it, and how absolutely mind-blowing it will be. We ARE taking some time off for Devin to have some much needed family time, but, we ARE hitting the road again in March 2007, headlining tours of both America and Europe, as well as Australia and the Far East. And I am shooting the straight sh** with you, as I always do. We are too good to just dissolve, and those are Dev's words. I will never apologize for one of my bandmates speaking his mind, and if that was what was on Devin's mind at that exact time and date, then that's what was on his mind. Give the man some space. Don't worry kiddies, Strapping Young Lad is not disappearing anytime soon. We are a f***in' fungus. No cream or lotion is gonna do us in that easily. Unless, of course, it's Vagisil.

See ya on the road,

Gene

so, so,so ugly...

Jon is Davis is fat and his lyrics are the stuff of boybands these days. Deal with it.

Townsend has a lot of vocal range. He roars and screams far better than cry-baby Davis. His singing is both modern and old school and he roars like a f***ing demon.

These days Davis sounds like he has a poopy diaper and and his mommy skipped a bottle feeding.

Not you.

I let your childishness (and my own) drag me into a namecalling contest with you, which was way off topic not to mention wasting space. Again, note that the post I made where I called YOU names in return was removed the same time as yours.

As for your case made in post 43:

Enlighten me on how Korn are BETTER than SYL.

Korns singer has less vocal range. His lyrics are ---ALWAYS--- about being beaten, abused and loathed with each album from the first two the lyrics became very simplistic. Davis's anger has tapered off to a whimper.

I have no qualms with the rhythm section accept that theres nothing mind blowing about slap bass or hip-hop drumming.

The guitarists...oh wait singular, one found God....uses the same recycled riffs and play at virtually the same radio-ready pace for every song..."Y'all Wannna Single?!?".....apparently f***ing so!

Thats all Korn are about now.

They hired POP MUSIC PRODUCERS to make sh**ty tunes without even a trace of the gritty minimalism that made them interesting on their self title debut.

Korn borught us Limpbizkit, yet another reason to hate them. They covered "Word Up" and then had the audacity to cover "Another Brick in the Wall".....

It's a shame that syl will likely be departing from the scene for at least awhile, but Dev has certainly already given us a timeless contribution to the genre. Whether his future endeavors with The Devin Townsend band make melodic, or angsty progressions is entirely up to what his soul dictates. As both a fan of Devin, and metal, I wish him all the best.

KoRn can be attributed to all the years I wasted in high school listening to what others told me was "cool". They also introduced the world to Limp Bizkit, and could of potentially ruined Dimmu Borgir's career. Only the weak "Follow the leader", the strong are their own unique leaders.

Meh, corndog (I don't care about your spelling either. *Shock!!!*) likes Korn, a band who's getting sh**tier by the album. Meh, he dislikes SYL the musical brain child of an ugly, balding genius. So? Does his opinion really mean a damn thing (notice no question mark - because it's rhetorical).
To post #22 (the end) - seriously now, what do you know of that fellows personal life? Nothing? I thought so. Somewhere in these posts someone called you an 8 year old, you may not be but you certainly act like one when trying to providing logical proofs for your tastes, which always come out as being illogical because you use ad hominem attacks more than pure rational defenses.

To quote RM? "Enlighten me on how Korn are BETTER than SYL".
Please do... I'd love to hear it. I need a good laugh.

On topic now: SYL is going to be missed, but Devin has to do what he has to do. As someone already pointed out: there is life beyond the music business. Many have come and gone because of such a thing. Cherish the master-pieces, for they are sealed in eternity.

Hopefully he'll do some quality stuff in that arena and won't abandon the hard stuff altogether.

It also sounds like Deving Townsend is going the way of Dramain, kinda like saying "I'm bigger than metal." I never like that attitude.
Anyhow, I will agree with the absolute fact that he is the ugliest man in metal, hands down.

I'm not a big SYL fan. Listened to the new stuff and some was good and some didn't do it for me. But I'd rather any band call it quits when they don't feel metal anymore than to go on making watered down versions of their music because they're not angry anymore. (who might be a perfect example?)

But based on his comments, I would think he'll be back anyway. I'm nearly 34, got a wife and kid. Sure, it softens you up in some ways but I've never felt the urge to adandon metal. Then again, I don't have the pressure he has from touring and labels and all the bullsh** side of things. But life has a way of throwing sh** back in your face - he'll be p***ed off and back again eventually!

Ok, heres my response!
RememberMetal, i will not tell you that KORN is better than SLY! Because that would be my opinion, not a fact.

However, i will tell you why i think KORN is the greatest,"to me". First, i am a lryic man, i like instruments, but it is the lyrics of a band that draws me in. So what you consider whining, b****ing, ect..... I consider it to be real emotion! I also believe that every song does not need to be 10 min long and have a 7 min guitar solo, its annoying! However i do like some music like that Metallica, ACDC, Ozzy, ect.....but not all the time.

Korn started a revolution for my generation, they made it ok to be different and still be considered somewhat metal, they paved the way for a lot more bands than Limp Bizkit! Alot of really good bands with alot to say. You will never hear me say that they are the most talented guitar players, they are no Angus Young and i know this. But David Sylveira is one of the best drummers to come out in the last 20 years! I like the slap bass, its different and gives them a unique sound, that is what makes Korn, they are "unique". I like to hear about pain, anger, and every day f***en problems, i do not want to hear about devils, and death in every song!

I think they did a great job covering pink floyd, metallica, and cameo! Another thing is that they care about their fans example- fans drew artwork for their cd cover, they give it their all every night on stage( i should know ive seen them 19 times), at the chicago cubs game jon d. threw out hand fulls of money to the crowd after the game, their ticket prices are 10$- who else does that, they have never sold out and never will, they will go down as one of the greatest bands ever.
Love it or hate it KORNS on top!!!

I hope that answers something, if not just make fun of me like you guys always do, hahahah!

Korndog,

Thank you.

That is exactly the kind of reasoning I can truely and wholeheartedly respect.

Heres something you might not expect or know.
I'm 26 (your generation give or take) and was a big supporter of Korn when there first two albums dropped. The debut is an instant classic in my opinion and "Peachy" while by no means great, still holds a place in my heart.....metal or not....

In my opinion the material sort of tapered off and started lacking the depth I heard in songs like Blind, Clown, Faget and Daddy....

I felt somewhat betrayed by the direction Korn continued to go with each album from Leader forward and I think the latest album is 100% bottom of the barrel.

That said, I think most bands lose their fire over time (Metallica, Tool and NIN to name some popular ones). I can see the same thing happening to SYL down the line..."City" is impossible to top...sort of like "Master of Puppets". Where do you go from that level of greatness?...

Korn just came unglued much quicker and in a fashion I found largely distasteful...Especially with "Word Up", "Y'all Wanna Single", "Brick in the Wall" and "Twisted Transistor"....

So theres my take on SYL Korn and the degeneration of the muscian with commercial success and aging.

Tangent Time:

Korn have failed.

As pioneers they were great for bringing a sense of minimalism to metal (simple riffs, errie effects, restrained production, and a genuine sense of anguish rather than just anger) but everything even remotely metal or revolutionary about them ceases to be.

Not just that a million bands "followed their lead" but that they completely changed hats after that second album....

Davis lost track of his demons, they had too much $$$ to funnel into production, and they had guest spots from Naz and Fred Durst....

"Otherside" is f***ing compost.

Korndogg, I'm not going to get on your case for liking Korn but I just want to hear your take on this.

Listen to "Ball Tongue", "Helmet in the Bush", "Clown" and "Blind".

Then listen to "Word Up", "Twisted Transitor" and "Y'all Wanna Single?"

How can you possibly support Korns most recent output if you've been a fan of them from way back.

RememberMetal, i respect your opinion.
I have been a fan of korn since the first time they played "shoots and ladders" on the radio, i had to get the cd!
It is one of the best cds to ever come out, then LIP followed and it was great, i became an even bigger fan, it was different, not the same old metal with 8min long solos! Thats why i liked it!
Then came their third, different but still korn, a little rap metal but i respected that every one was following them so they had to change it up a bit!
Issues, Untouchables, and Take a look in the mirror all around kick a$$ cds, yes they had a lot more money, especially to put into production, but doesnt every band once they've "made it"!
More money means better sound and alot more variety, so many different sounds and sh**!
Their latest album,"see you on the other side" is a very different piece of work! It consists of things no band has tried. To tell the truth i had to listen to it 3 times all the way through before i could start to appreciate it! I didnt like it at first. That is korn, thats why nobody else is Korn, cause they do not care nor are they willing to be different!

Put it this way, look at every korn cd like it is a different band on each but with sort of the same sound, its korn, you can not compare albums. They are all so different!
Try listening to "SYOTOS" all the way through and tell me what you think!

I love a good dialogue, thanks Korndogg.

Listening to SYOTOS was a painful experience I'd rather not re-visit. It makes me somewhat narrow minded for not giving it another shot, but it was just too big of a turn towards pop and away from internalized rage and passive aggression.

"Freak on a Leash" was at least a semi-graceful bunny hop to the radio mainstream.

This new material is overt selling out.

They are trying to reach fans by dulling the rough edges that made them interesting. I'm glad Korn have fans more loyal than myself. I was truely a die hard fan about 10 years ago....But they lost meafter Leader... but I still adore their first record...and even respect scattered songs on later albums ("Did My Time" was decent and "Hollow Life" blew me away).

I have faith in bands that can (as our fool president would say) "stay the course" while dedicating some songs to experimentation (Opeth, DEP and SYL have done this with grace)....

It just felt to me like the latest album was Korn taking a huge constipated dump on their original fanbase.

I get so caught up in the fond memories of Korns first cd I often neglect LIP in my Korn rants.....

Life is Peachy is sort of a conundrum for me. The screaming at the halfway point on "Chi" still makes the hairs on my arm stand up, 10 years after the first time I heard it...It comes from so far down in the gut you -know- it's authentic. Mr Rogers was pretty decent too. That tantrum in "Good God" if pretty f***ing classic too.

I liked the album but it felt less cohesive. A tiny gripe but it was the first indication I had that Korn couldnt send one out of the park like self title....Proved to be right down the line.

Select works off every album leading up to Otherside have moved me at least a little.

"It's On" was a great opening song on Follow the Leader.

Issues had the singles,(Make Me Bad, Falling Away and Somebody Someone) incedently the only good songs...

Untouchables really bombed but "Hollow Life" and "Alone I Break" were experimentation done well and "Here to stay" had a great rhythm to it, simple but effective. Davis works the high end of his voice on that record but most of the songs were just lifeless.

I downloaded "Did My Time" and "Break Some Off" and avoided Take a look in the Mirror all together.

Ohterside got one listen most of the way through and I spent the rest of the day drinking in order to forget.

Alas Korn....I knew ye well....That band totally owned the 15th year of my life, with Pantera and Slayer. Good times though.

everybody has their likes and dislikes but im sorry korn is one of those bands in that category of music that is really not metal, when was the last time you saw ametal band on 17 magazine, never!. true metal bands dont co exist with rappers and metalers korn is for kids and teen magazine readers as their friends limp bizkit wannabe metalers, god i hate that rap rock .if you ask any true rap listeners they tell you f*** no that aint rap and if you ask a true metal head he'll tell you f*** no that aint metal. point being,.no body claims that sh**ty music its just a trend,it will fade away.trust me
