'Evil' Music Blamed For Blood Retch Singer's Suicide

BBC News issued the following report yesterday:

The father of a heavy metal rock singer who killed himself has blamed the band's "dark and evil" music for his suicide.

Gareth Bonetto, 29, was known as Mad Eddie Richards in his role as singer with Pontypridd band Blood Retch. He hanged himself in March after weeks of hospital psychiatric treatment.

His father Lawrence told an inquest in Merthyr Tydfil it was as though his son was "two different people" when he was in the band.

The inquest was told Gareth Bonetto formed the death metal band Blood Retch in 2002. The band had played across the UK and Europe and their debut album Pain is My Weakness included songs with titles including The End, My Time has Come and Demons.

Lawrence Bonetto told the inquest: "When he was playing with the band it was as if my son was two different people - he took on the persona of Mad Eddie. His music was dark and evil and it did for him."

The band's website listed Mad Eddie's likes as "burgers, Satan, money, wrestling and porn". His dislikes included "everybody" and he said he was "looking forward to destroying the world".

The inquest was told that that shortly before his death in March this year, Mr Bonetto had damaged his flat and cut off his shoulder-length hair.

He was given psychiatric treatment but was released home after four weeks in hospital. Police discovered the musician hanging from a belt at his home in Nantgarw, near Cardiff, after the alarm was raised by his sister.

The inquest was told that Blood Retch have continued playing since Mr Bonetto's death and have dedicated a song called Soviet in his honour.

A verdict of suicide was recorded.

Sounds like either Metal was perfect for him or he was perfect for Metal. I might also question the father's influence in his lack of will to live. Parents love denying that sh**.

I really don't get how you can blame THE MUSIC when he was part of making that music. At that point don't you start looking at what drove him to make his music or write the lyrics? Most of these "metal as a bad influence" cases are crazy enough, but to say that the music someone was creating influenced him to kill himself sounds the craziest yet.

Blink 182 make evil music.

Now that I have your attention, some kid killed himself to "Adam's Song" about 5 years ago....The thing is the song was about plowing through life's hardships and that kid could'nt do it.

The kid's mom found him dead with that song on repeat ( yes, I would probably kill myself too if I listened to Blink on repeat, now that we have that joke out of the way let me finish....).

The kid was probably playing it to motivate himself through another day.

The mother saw it as a song advocating suicide despite the song's eventual happy ending about surviving the depths of teenaged angst.

Moral of the story: You can blame anything in this world for your woes and probably make it on the news and have millions of dollars spent on research trying to come up with a resolution.....

yay prozac!

But odds are the person is the one who is damaged not their creative output or their taste in music....Those things are a RESULT of who the person is and where their tastes may lie.

Only the mad go on killing sprees in real life after doing it Grandtheft auto.....Maybe Ozzy talks about suicide but you're the headcase if you try it....People need to start pointing the fingers at the people who are dead not people who entertained the person before they became a corpse rotting on the hardwood floor.

You know in this day and age everyone needs to blame someone for something. It is ridiculous to try to blame a band, certain song,tv show, movie for someone's death. Let's see in this article it said he was treated for 4 weeks in a mental hospital well that should be the first indication the boy was f***ed up in the head. It goes back long ago when that idiot was listening to a tupac song and killed a cop because of it. If you are weak that is your problem if you can't distinguish between reality and make believe then YES you do need to kill yourself. But don't ruin it for other people to enjoy.

Demons are as real as Music is. And sound is the natur of being.

yep, had to be the music. obviously something he chose to dedicate a lot of time and effort towards would be a reason to commit suicide, and don't even f***ing think for a second that it had anything to do w/ the parents f***ing their kid up. Parents are really full of sh** sometimes, don't want to accept any responsibility.
