"travlow1", I can't say that I've been a fan since the beginning, but I've been a fan since I was 8 years old and that was 20 years ago. But as I look at my once favorite metal hero's...I feel that it's been over for a looong time now. *hangs head in disappointment*

I think it suits them pretty well to play with the Stones.
That's essentially what they have become. Not to take away from what they've done for metal,
but they have sort of become a parody of themselves like the Stones.
I still believe (just my opinion) that Metallica is the greatest heavy band of all time,
but after you've been around for twenty years, how do you stay relevent?
Times change, people change, society changes, music changes.
I believe Metallica is still capable of making good music, but I don't see anything
new and groundbraking from them. The Stones come out with an ablum every several years,
but never with the impact of the music of their prime. Same these day's with Metallica.
Metallica is such a big name, that the nostalgia will keep people interested for years to come.

relentless austin, your the first person whos opinion actually makes any sense on an intellectual level. . . .HOWEVER i still dont entirely agree with you.
I love Metallica and always have.
Not every case is the same when it comes to bands and especially those who are important, for instance there isnt a Yoko Ono style figure in every band who eventually makes them disentagrate. Similarly the path the stones have gone down is not the path that Metallica will take. . .I think the only band worth bagging out is the Stones because they were just Beatle poseurs and the only reason why they are still around is because they are essentially the last from the Beatle era.
The question is what do we the fans of music classify as an important Metallica album?? And do we want more of the same?
Most would answer Master of Puppets. And i agree. But christ, is that where were all going to be stuck for the rest of our lives!!?? Seriously. . . some of you need to be a little more open minded about your music . . . i can guarantee no matter what Metallica bring out by the end of next year, most of you wont like it because a) it appeals to the mainstream, b) it doesnt sound like master of puppets c) your too set in the mindframe that Metallica since the black album sucks or d) you dont have the musical, social or human education to comment at all.well ok. . .refer back to b)
Have some faith you guys, Metallica is important and will be important for many years to come wether you like them or not. . . I love ALL their albums, regardless of style, motif or sexual f***in preference. . .So as ive said in past forums, if you dont like them dont post your f***in comments anywhere and bore the sh** out of us. . .go back to the f***in 80's and STAY there!! alterbatively bag teh fukkin stones

Metallica's a band i loved from "kill em all" to the "black album". after that, they started to change and i didnt hop on board. They still kick a$$ live cause they play old school sh** (saw them in austin, tx 2005) but i'd skip any new cd they come out (i'd wipe my a$$ with "ST. Anger")

Oh, the irony....
Yeah, I think EET FUK is right, but so is relentless austin. I mean, people don't like anything since the Black album 'cos after that, they changed their style(shock horror, a band that was around for 15 year's changed style!). I like the movie SKOM, but when I wentback and tried to listen to St. Anger, it still didn't sound right. But I do have faith in them...
People keep waffling on about how everything since the Black album is sh**e. Guess what... it's not! It's different. I'd rather listen to Load than the Black album(...And Justice For All and Ride the Lightening being my favourites). Not because it's different but because I'm sick of the Black album, but that's my owm preferance.
But, take Jazz for example. It's totally different to practically any music style, especially rock. Does that make it bad, hell no. Jazz has, in all probability, the biggest following of die-hard music lovers in the world. A lot of people I know love it, a lot of people I konw hate it, and everything in between. But nobidy would dream of knocking it. Kirk is now a Jazz lover and guitarist.(It happens to many musicians)
Load to St. Anger is different guy's, not bad.
And I've never heard a bad review against any album that Rob has worked on. (Just a thought)
I'm not expecting another Master Of Puppets, I'm expecting something similiar to ReLoad. I think that if they wanted to make another Master Of Puppets, then they would.
I can see why people would see them as an irrelevant band though. But personally, I don't see any band as irrelevant. As long as you are there for the music and will try your best to keep your fans happy, that's what counts.

f***er, you need to go listen to more of that hatebreed, atreyu no tallent sh**!!!!
My opinion, Metallica has and will contenue influence every person in this generation who has picked up a guitar, bass guitar, and a pair of drum sticks. It is "Sad But True" to say that they will never ever in this life time make another master piece like "Master Of Puppets". Hands down just the best song writing, song structure, molody's, solo's , drumming , ect.... Metallica's best album ever (my opinion). "Battery", "Orion", Damage Inc.", "The Thing That Should not be", and of course, "Master Of Puppets", all are the best songs metallica have ever wrote. St. Anger was compleatly the oppiosite of Master of puppets. It lacked everything that every Metallica fan craved, Solo's, Out of this world song structures, and fast old school drumming. But that's what they wrote at that particular time in their career and in their lives. Hell... If my band was the biggest and riches band in the world, and I just got out of rehab, my drummer was constantly being an a$$hole, and lost a bass player because I was too damn c***y to understand his musical needs, on top of that, lost almost every fan from the past 20 years..... I would have also ended up writing a sh.i.t.t.y A.S.S. album like ST. Anger as well. I still have a lot of respect for them as mucicians and I don't expect anything mind blowing from them except their live shows. But their my last hope, Dimebag died, no pantera reunion. Hopefully Metallica will consiter recreating an album close to Master of Puppets, but I doubt it.

eet fuk you just idmited all of the sh** that metallica has done wrong. i am an ex-metallica fan and i stll love muster puppets even though its just a bit overated. so you can have your crappy st. anger album you wanker. i used mine for toilet paper and sold the disc to homeless person. f*** you.

16. writes:
Metallica was good 10 years ago. That is when they hit their prime. And justice for all was their last good album. After that it went downhill. It was the same lyrics jumbled around and recycled after that. St Anger did get a terrible review I remember when it came out. I lost all faith in them when they sued that kid from napster. If you remember correctly they said the main reason they did it was for the money because instead of buying their crap we downloaded it for free. Now don't get me wrong you can't fault any man his money BUT how many actually were downloading their music and how much money did they actually lose. Their record sales now adays will tell you the truth in that one. They were a great band in their day so was Slayer,Exodus,S.O.D.,Megadeath, BUT these bands are all past their prime and good for them that they are still putting out music but just like the Stones they need to hang it up.

20. writes:
I think the reason so many people clench on to those early albums, and tend to have such
an negative emotional response to Metallica's more recent albums is that the first
four or five albums were groundbraking and genre defining albums. There were quite a few albums
around '84 to '88, give or take a few years, that defined that style of metal.
EET FUK, that is a good question though, is that where we will be stuck for the rest of our lives?
I think a lot of people fear inevitable change. Most metalheads tend to despise many other types of
music. We know what sounds good to us, therefore people set these rules and boundaries
of what metal should be. Changes in Metallica's music was and is inevitable, as with any other band.
Metallica gained there success through playing the thrash style they help define, and touring like crazy.
As soon as they got huge, it seems like they just turned around and went the other way.
A lot of fans saw that as a betrayal. That seems to me to be why many fans or ex-fans will never
appreciate a new Metallica album, no matter what it sounds like.
Personally, I still look forward to each new album, and hope for the best.

while i have been a fan of metallica for many years, i believe now that they really should stop. it is heartbreaking to say that theyre past their prime. the days of ride the lightning, master of puppets and and justice for all are over. the black album was great, load was alright and reload was average, but st anger was a little disappointing. anyway, long live the days when metallica was in their prime as the masters of meatl music.

22. writes:
metallica's best album to date is, funnily enough, S&M - which basically means i love everything metallica have produced thus far, and look forward to future installments. if i had to pick a best actual album that wasnt just a mix of other album's songs done differently, i'd take ...And Justice For All
hey, could somebody remind me; why is that i love metallca but loathe megadeth?!

so back to topic: can anyone even get that video to play?
it looks to me like you gotta be part of the met fan club or something... one thing i hate when artists do, why should u pay for a fan club? so you can get free stuff? ... ... so you PAY for FREE stuff? that doesn't make much sense. they should just flat out say what you get for it. which most of the time isn't worth it. especially for metallica's fan club.
also i kept my SN this way cause i respect what they DID. i created when metallica was my favorite band 5 years ago. even though then other bands were starting to grow on me, particularlly blind guardian (thank you napster).

24. writes:
ok so metallica are past there prime do you no why that is. it is becuase metallica done the stupipidist thing ever 1# atcually besides make load or st. anger. they kicked out dave mustaine one of the best guitarist ever and put in a avrage guitar player kirk hammet dont get me wrong i dont have any thing againts kirk but hes just su cks a triharding mustaine. the reason i point out this is that mustaine is a far supior musisian to most guitarists and is very underated kirk hemmet uses to many power cords and theres only a limited amount of power cording. you see im a guitarists and know about them and i can tell you that its very hard to play what mustaine plays and hes has sure got a lot of riffs in hes garage. thats why metallica are past there prime and why they should quit fooling them selves and retire now becasue they ll just get worse sad but true. megadeth are light year s ahead any way.

25. writes:
They got rid of Dave because he was a major d.i.c.k. Metallica says they are going to try to make there next album like the old stuff. If they don't make an album that a majority of the people like they will be done for sure. And there last good album was ..Justice for all. Black was the mainstream album that all the teeny boppers started listening to. And then al of a sudden it was cool to like Metallica. I personally feel like they are done with but i will give them one last chance. I mean the song St. Anger was pretty good..I thought. Later keep rockin!!!

I've been in the music business long enough to know that chemistry, lack of inspiration/creativity, and PRODUCERS have a profound influence on music and the individuals who create it. Bob Rock has a LOT to do with the way Metallica sounds today. Take Rock out of the picture; Metallica would probably sound like Motorhead right now...which to me, would sound a whooooole lot better than what they do now.
"EET FUK" I most humbly agree with the majority of your comments. Metallica will always be my alltime most favorite metal band....period. I can agree that they are still capable of writing great music, and some of the songs they write now are good (to some extent), but over time things change. In my opinion, the name is selling now...not the music.

What's the big deal. Bands evolve. Music evolves. It's art. You wouldn't tell an artist to paint the same goddamn picture over and over again for years and years. You don't have to like what they are doing. However, if you cant respect their choices, you should have been born without ears....or better yet...not born at all. I've been a fan all my life. I personally enjoy their earlier stuff more. Usually the people who dont understand this are non-musicians...and if you are a musician and still find the need to bash other band's decisions...your ignorance of the way music works..is amusing.

Somehow, as with all internet threads, immaturity reigns.
Metallica can do whatever the hell they want. It's not like their first going to stop and think, "Oh, what if this makes three fans in Montreal upset!" They're going to do what they want and you don't haave to give a damn about it, but you still do.

After all these years, this topic never seems to get old.
I wonder why bands like the Rolling Stones don't seem to get such criticism every time they release a new album. Looking at the evolution of many artists over the years, why are people so critical of Metallica? I've been hearing this same whining it seems like for f***ing ever.
By the way, I wish Metallica would release the presidio sessions material.
There were little bits of it here and there in the movie, and some of it sounded pretty interesting.

It doesnt even matter what people say about them. The one's who bash do it to feel better about themselves and to feel like they have made a difference. They've influenced so many up and coming metal bands today...whether the new bands realize it or not. So for those who say sh**....you can turn around and listen to whatever you prefer...but if it werent for metallica...chances are that the metal scene today would be different.

Going through the Justice stuff to the mediocre Reload and Garager Days Re-re-re-re-visited... got to say, S&M was a great way for Jason to end it all. Great final triumph

Whether Metallica can "do whatever the f*** they want" doesn't change the cold, hard fact that they've sucked explosive swine anus for the last 15 years give or take the Black album. I'm grateful for every album made pre-"Load"....mostly, every album pre-black to be honest....
As for millions of fans....
feh.
Just (barely) over a million people picked up St. Anger....thats it..... and thats not much considering the sales of EVERY OTHER METALLICA ALBUM.....
These "fans" some of you speak of, are the here today gone today fans that thought "Whiskey in the Jar" "Nothing Else Matters" and "Fuel" were....catchy little tunes.
Metallica stuck to their guns by going their own way and doing what they want, not what they fans expect...and that speaks for the ...artistic integrity....but doing what they wanted was trying to cash in on the grunge sound (Load, Reload) and nu-metal and garage rock (St. Anger).....
I'm not trying to upset anyone for the thrill of it, I'm stating what most long term fans already --know-- but may refuse to admit. Metallica are no longer an current/active force of influence in metal.....hell they're not even on the radio anymore....
They've used up whatever incredible genius made the first 4 masterworks in the Metallica discography.

66. writes:
i believe the incredible genius you speak of is Cliff Burton RememberMetal. . .you look at Kill Em All (which was pretty much already written when Cliff joined the band) and contrast that with Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. With RTL began the wierder time signatures, the chopping and changing effects, more of a sinister sound really, look no furher than Fight Fire With Fire. . . Master of Puppets brought the first 2 albums together in a great balance, and Cliff was no doubt about it a major inluence in that. You can still see the same sort of craetive principle in AJFA with time sigs and wat not, but without Cliff there, i beiieve the three of them lost their way. . .Cliffs eccentricity when it came to music made the Metallica that we all hope to see again. ie through his
likeing ofwierder stuff. . .lars is quoted as saying that when they each brought records to rehearsal to listen to, Cliff would bring such things as, BACH and Beethoven and the like whereas the rest would bring Motorhead. . .thats where the difference lays, and its blatantly obvious to see that. . .even Michael Kamen commented on how orchestra like MOP was. The three original members of Metallica are simply 'rock' ,musicians whereas Cliff was a musician end of story.
Another interesting thought is what role Jason played in the Metallica sound between the black album and reload. . .i doubt he had much at all on AJFA. . . but given his track record, i think it was him that maybe pushed Metallica into the 'rock arena', with his constant bickering about 'having to be professional'. That may or may not have been a contributing factor, but just look at the music he has played with other bands such as echo brain and wat type is it?? plain rock.
I personally dont want to see another MOP again, because i think that time has passed, but i believe that with Rob Trujillo. a new Metallica on a creative level will be born. ..it will be different. . .have no doubt about it, but i think with Robs own history of making music, with his funk and soul influences coupled with his love of metal, i think theres reason to quietly wait in hope that Metallica will make another important album. I enjoy all Metallicas music including Load Reload and St Anger, but i can see why people wulod dismiss them as being not important.
One things for sure though, Metallica live, give as good as any young band on stage and in my opinion a lot better. Rob will make a difference to the writing in this band, so lets just wait and see. Cliff was a genius and theres not a single one of us out there who doesnt acknowledge that and wish he was still alive, just to see what kind of music Metallica would make, but hes not, and right now, theres an opportunity that Metallica with a new influence, Rob, will make a record that we can all head bang to.

68. writes:
Remembermetal, then again, i'd be a miracle for ANY band to do anything close to MOP, or Justice. DAMAGE INC, dont know if Jason was the one pushing them towards stadiums, I thought the whole Black Album and "getting huge" thing seems (and sounds!) pretty calculated, and if you mention the word "calculated" with Metallica, Lars' name somehow comes up.
69. writes:
heh...
I must admit, theres at least a little hope for Metallica if they allow Trujillio to be an equal member in the studio....That may take another 2 or 3 albums though.......
I think whats really suffered other than Metallicas instrumental sound, was the vocal and lyric style changes Hetfield has been bringing into each album....
James' wierd little vocal nuances that are fodder for comedians: The "YEEEAH"'s, the use of wavering vowel sounds at the ends of certain words, rather than holding the note with an echo effect as done in say "Master of Puppets"..............It's just too arena-rock-Nickleback for it's own good......
Nickleback...heh...
Which brings me to the lyrics....Again...Listen to any or every song on "Master of Puppets" and do the same with "St. Anger"....The themes and vocabulary seem a bit more advanced on MOP than St Anger....this is from a band that's 20 years older and wiser......sad.
And yes, Metallica are still the live monsters they always were. I saw them twice in 2000 and it was a live music milestone in my life.

rob had alot of influnce on st anger he did base and it was sloppy and had no feeling ,not even the new goo member wanted to play it so he changed it at the live events ,bob has no talent he is even below studio fill in and for a band with metallica past even to let a nobody play shows me that they never respected jason( it tells me they think anybody can fill jasons spot)and bobs past with bands is not a good track record. he gets his hands in the mix and it turns to crapp or comes out as babby drool, im not saying metallica cant make good music ,the first 3 records were a metal staple, but some where down the line they fuked up blame the booze & drugs what ever it a way out and is used by everyone faling at what they do. maby if they started to care about the music again and not radio or suing fans and be true to them selfs. i watched the st anger dvd and it was a b**** fest, they seemed to lost the love of music, find the fun in music and you wiil make good music ,make it a chore and it fales. thanks glad2bemad i forgot wath it means to be a mucician in a thrash band.

Uhhh 'sdf'.. ROB HAD NO PART IN WRITING OF ST. ANGER!
All that crappy bass work was done before they even considered looking for a member. The album would've sounded much better if James just took a bass and did what the guitars did.
Nah, I've always heard top-notch bass work from Rob and expect to see more in the future. His style is very different to the St. Anger stuff...
Speaking off bass though, I was just talking to a cab driver who saw Cliff play here in Ireland just one or two weeks before he was killed...
R.I.P. Cliff...

ok so metallica do have one good album and that was kill em all and ride the lightning and then there made up slow riffs and sold out sad but true and they also ripped off dave mustaine kill em all and ride the lightning are his albums also. so megadeth are better inuff said.

you personally might not like st anger and reload and anythin past the black album but that doesnt make metallica over, they are gonna keep writin music and more often than not its gonna rock...if its different then hell yes....i dont expect you to wear the same clothes day in and day out, and its like sayin oh when i have children i hope their balls dont drop because they will sound different and i dont think my pathetic little mind can handle the change.....

well... st anger kicks ass... but they could have done something to make it sound better! I know loads of bands who's garage demos sound better than st anger. That rough sound worked in Frantic and the title track but then it just gets boring. Hopefully the next album (if there will be one) wont be another garage demo

and, its weird IF Jason wasnt allowed to do side projects (as Some Kind Of Monster suggests) as James has been on loads of COC stuff and Kirk did the Spawn soundtrack thing (Satan w Orbital) so, if that really was the case, any person with decent IQ would have left. But, I think it was something else... if you watch the backstage extras on Cunning Stunts DVD, you can see that the guy was just ignored. Same thing onstage. Well, whatever... he left, Rob's in. so, whatever

Old School thrash bands can release good records still for example the newest 2 Exodus records kick ass. You can actually recognize them as Exodus. If you took Kill Em' All and ST. Anger you would never no it was the band. Metallica still has a hell of a live show, but they do what they want and not what old school hammerheads want. They also love money. So if Metallica wants to make music like ST. Anger they should change their name. I feel that this next album for Metallica wil lbe pivetal on who sides with Metallica. We all know thrash bands have had some sub par albums like Megadeth and Slayer. Metallica can still write good music if they chose to, howeber they only see money. I sincerely feel that this next album will be a defining one in their career. And we can sure expect a bunch of touring afterwards. If this next album is garbage like St. Anger they should throw in the towl and just exclusively tour. And they should do what Maiden did and Early Days tour. However Maiden had no reason to do just an Early Days tour. So this next album will be the album that makes or breaks the band. And get the new Exodus album they need the support and they deserve it.

your very right there...st anger is very awesome in its own way but still not as good as their older stuff, i love the industrial sound the album has, i like the fact that metallica can completely change their sound like that and still be great, i find that rare, any true metallica fan would like and respect whatever metallica choose to do because they are doing it for thier own musical pleasure and not for some crappy record label.
