Multi-instrumentalist Max Portnoy (Tallah, Code Orange) recently took part in Drumeo’s “For The First Time” challenge, tackling an ambitious classic from Rock & Roll Hall Of Famers Led Zeppelin.

The newly released episode sees Max following in the footsteps of his father, acclaimed Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who has also appeared on Drumeo in the past — including alongside Max himself. For the challenge, Max was tasked with learning “In My Time Of Dying,” a song he had never previously heard. He was introduced to the 1975 track through a version with the drums removed, leaving him to craft his own performance over the sprawling 11-minute composition. That challenge came with added pressure given the original percussion work by legendary late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.
