Indiana School Officials Say Dimebag T-Shirt Violates Policy

Carmen McCollum of Indiana's NWITimes.com has issued the following report:
A woman is angry with the Lake Central School District because school officials contend her son's shirt is inappropriate and violates school policy.
Debra Briones, of Schererville, Indiana, said her son, Timothy, 17, is a junior at the school. She said he wore a shirt recently that depicted a picture of a heavy metal guitarist named "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, someone he looks up to.
According to a Web dictionary, a dime bag refers to a small plastic bag of heroin that usually costs $10.
Briones said her son learned how to play the guitar by watching Abbott, and looks up to him as a role model.
Timothy was called into the office of Tim Powers, sophomore dean of students, on Friday on another matter, Debra Briones said. Timothy said he was asked to turn his shirt inside out.
He did not, returned to class and was not disciplined.
"I've worn this shirt many times since I got it for Christmas," he said, adding this was the first time anyone said anything.
Lake Central School Superintendent Janet Emerick said the policy regarding apparel is clear and is applicable to all students within the district.
"Any apparel or item that alludes to drugs, alcohol, sex, the occult, gangs, profanity or which are offensive to ethnic or racial groups is prohibited," she read from the policy.
Emerick said the student handbook, including school policies, is distributed at the beginning of the school year. She declined to discuss specific students.
His mother went to the school the next day to bring in articles about Abbott to show what a "good guy" he was, and discuss how much her son admired the guitarist.
"The principal wouldn't even look at it," she said.
When asked what she ultimately wants, Briones said she'd like for her son to be able to wear his shirt to school, and that his First Amendment rights not be violated.

I thought a dime bag was weed too. I think Carmen McCollum has her facts mixed up. It's says "according to a web dictionary" too, so maybe that's the problem, go ask a drug task force member what a dime bag is, don't google it!
This is f***ed up.
I bet they let the girls there wear those jeans with their asses hanging out and those stupid bellyshirts.
What did the shirt look like?

schools are so f***in skrewed up, who cares if the shirt had a drug referance on it. its not like the kid is handing out weed, he is just admiring dimebag darrell. f*** schools, f*** the rules, If I was that kid I would wear a shirt with a bunch of gangsters on it with them smoking weed and drinking alcohol while having sex, and they will be also saying F U C K christans.

That's f***ing ridiculous. I do not see where these people get the need to be so uptight. The only guesses I could venture are that the dean is a religious man or about to get fired for not doing much. I've been wearing an Abysmal Gates shirt to my high school. That's got a faded picture of a nude nun fingering herself. I'm not shoving my clothes in anybody's face though..nither is this kid. Keep on wearing your Dimebag shirt dude!

Eh, touchy subject
The school is probably using the "broken windows theory"
Also if a kid gets caught with any type of drug in many states (I would assume including Indiana) their must be a trial which costs money, time, and the school will get crap from various organizations.
I don't think their is anything wrong with the shirt, but the school was just watching their own asses, staff could lose their jobs over controversial stuff like this.

Yes, high school is just glorified babysitting. Props to the little dude for not turning his shirt inside out. I got sent home once for basically the same offence but mostly because that b**** teacher had not been laid for many, many years. Youll get through it dude and then you can say f*** the world.

Is it me or is the school system even more funny now than when I was an active participant.
I graduated from highschool a year before that Columbine sh** went down and watched as an outsider as my friends and girlfriend shuffled into their shools with metal detectors, K-9 units, forced uniform policy and transparent backpacks. absurd.
A knee jerk response to psyhcologically damaged individuals. And now individuality is being phased out because of some kid has a mild, everyones-heard-it-before drug term. 30 years ago public highschools were very lax on the drug policies and even had smoking areas! my highschool had a f***ing smoking shed!!!! it was still there in 1998!
More entertaining yet, I'm getting my masters in education. I won't be sending any of my students to the principal, for wearing a dime shirt.

Well I just have to post my thoughts on here. First off, I can remember back when I had my run ins with what I was wearing during school. I remember whering white camoflauge pants and was told to change because they were a known gang related color in my school district. f***in bullsh**. and I remeber when they sent me to the office for wearing my hair back in a ponytail, and ultimately I won, being able to where it,because i made them realize it was total bullsh**. But If ever I owned a dimebag shirt and wore it to school and they try to tell me to turn it inside out and after what happend to dime, Ide f***in wear dimebag shirts everyday to school till i f***in graduated or dropped out, lol!!!! f*** yeah, Live on Dime, and much repspect for not turning it inside out!!
