Sharon Osbourne's "Open Letter" To Iron Maiden Manager

In the ongoing aftermath of the San Bernardino Ozzfest incident, Sharon Osbourne has issued the following "open letter" to IRON MAIDEN manager Rod Smallwood:
"Rod,
"I found your statement to be completely void of the facts that led up to Saturday's show. Your press release was written like an old-time '80s manager, trying to use every opportunity to try and sell the record and the upcoming shows instead of just dealing with the truth.
"These are the facts:
"You claim to have been in the business for 30 years and have been to hundreds of gigs, but can you tell me how many times you have heard of an opening band talking sh*t about the headliner during their set and getting away with it? Not only is Ozzy the headliner, but he is also the man who is paying your band $185,000 a night. We gave IRON MAIDEN a chance to play to the biggest audiences they have ever played to in the U.S.A. We accommodated them with their stage set and at the band's request we even scoured the audience for people wearing IRON MAIDEN t-shirts and brought them down front during their set to make them feel more comfortable. Tell me, what other headliner would do that? Unfortunately those gestures were completely lost on Bruce Dickinson who for over 20 shows continually berated Ozzy and Ozzfest during his set.
"Over the last 10 years of Ozzfest, we have worked with over 200 bands. None of them were ever disrespectful to Ozzy or any of the other bands on the tour. But for 20 shows we were forced to hear Dickinson's nightly outbursts from the stage: 'When we come back to America, we'll be back with a proper sound system,' or "We won't be playing the same old songs every night (like SABBATH),' 'We don't need a teleprompter (like Ozzy)' and 'We don't need a reality show to be legit (again, like Ozzy).' Night after night we heard his complaints from the stage about how 'corporate' the venues were and how 'outrageous' the ticket prices were. Strangely enough, if you want to get a general admission ticket to stand in a field to see IRON MAIDEN at Reading this weekend it's going to cost you over $120. I would say that's very pricey, wouldn't you?
"When an artist comes on stage and says he's not playing the 55 minutes that he was allotted and that he is going to play for as long as he wants (cutting into SABBATH's set), I'm not going to let that happen. Dickinson was under the delusion that the 46,000 people in San Bernardino had come only to see IRON MAIDEN. He even proclaimed 'This is not the Ozzfest, This is Maidenfest.' I guess no one told him that we have an audience of 45,000 to 53,000 people every year in San Bernardino.
"Here's another fact for you. Bruce Dickinson's own band was embarrassed by him. IRON MAIDEN leader, Steve Harris, even came to Ozzy's dressing room to apologize to Ozzy for Bruce's behavior before MAIDEN took the stage in San Bernardino.
"It's shameful that Dickinson felt he had the right to air his issues publicly onstage every night as a way to boost his own ego. Dickinson never once came up to Ozzy and me to voice any concerns. He certainly had the opportunity to do so every night. If he wasn't able to show us that courtesy then why should I give him the respect to air my grievances with him in private? Ozzy's only interaction with Dickinson was on the first night of the tour. Ozzy, being the true gentleman that he is, passed Bruce in the hall and said 'Good luck and have a great show.' Unfortunately Dickinson felt the need to turn his back to Ozzy and walked away. Frankly, Dickinson got what he deserved. We had to listen to his bullsh*t for five straight weeks. He only had to suffer a couple of eggs on the head.
"On closing, yes, I did cut IRON MAIDEN's sound. This is the way I look at it: Ozzfest is our tour. We built it into something that's lasted 10 years now. We've been responsible for breaking many new bands and resurrecting the careers of former superstars. Part of our success stems from the fact that when a band is on Ozzfest we treat them with nothing but kindness and respect just as if we had invited them into our home. You can ask all of the bands who have been on the tour. They all describe it as the 'ultimate summer camp.' It's like one big family. Unfortunately Dickinson doesn't have the manners to realize that when you are invited into someone's home, are seated at their dinner table, are eating their food and drinking their wine, you shouldn't talk disrespectfully about them (Ozzy, BLACK SABBATH and Ozzfest), otherwise you just might get your ass handed to you. Every action has a reaction. Was Dickinson so naïve to think that I was going to let him get away with talking sh*t about my family night after night? I don't think he realizes who he's dealing with. I will not endure behavior like this from anyone.

When I saw MAIDEN in Ozzfest, Bruce didn't say ANYTHING about OZZY! He just said that us fans need to let MTV, VH1 and etc. know that WE WANT METAL!! She said he was talking SMACK every night......not true.

The Ozzfest sound system really bit the big one!! (At least when I was there) MAIDEN SOUNDED GOOD ANYWAY, but most of the other bands had problems.....like the guitars overpowering every other instrument, or the mike for the vocals being too high or low. If you were at the middle, it wasn't very loud at all, and people could all have a freakin' conversation and we couldn't even hear the bands very well! As far as playing the same old songs, that was all HER idea, and Bruce probably wanted to let the audience know that they DO have new songs that they were not allowed to play!

THIS QUOTE CAME AFTER ALL OF HER SABOTAGE BEGAN, and it was proven true by the fans who over-rode the pre-recorded "Ozzy chant" with a "MAIDEN chant" So what does that tell you, my Metal Children? Almost everyone agrees that Maiden stole the show night after night, but I don't think D I C K I N S O N would have made that statement if Sharon had not been screwing with the IRON MAIDEN SET!!

Well, if that's true, SHE DID let him get away with it until THE LAST SHOW!!! Why? Because she knew that she would loose money if Maiden left the tour! She knew that Maiden was pulling in some big bucks for Ozzfest, so she "supposedly" allowed the alleged insults to continue until the LAST SHOW! Doesn't THAT prove that money means more to her than anything else, including poor Ozzy and his bad health? She sure didn't give a crap about the fans!
I think she thought this stunt would be to Ozzy's benefit, but it seems like it backfired!

Iron Maiden en Black Sabbath are great (metal) bands. They still spearhead this great scene. That a spoiled, and not so metal, managing spouce of Ozzy with her mayor psychological troubles, acts so stupid and disrespectfull, on what should have been the greatest yearly festivals for loads of Metalfans in the U.S., is very disappointing. Metal is and will never be like the soapopera that she would like to create. Metal is forever, but in what form is up to the metalbands (and fans) all over the world, they rule the scene. Ozzfest is probably the worst festival ever. It is run by the most pretentious and money hungry woman(!) on the face of the Earth, who seems to insist that her husband perform and make money for her until the poor bugger drops dead on stage. It's a shame it's come to this. Ozzy is the new Ronald Reagan. He's become a parody of himself. I don't fault him completely, rather I blame his "Nancy", Sharon, and his other "handlers". Sharon has always defended her "meal ticket" in militant fashion, but things are just getting out of hand now. It sucks when metal gods get too old, and/or buy into their own hype. I've never been a huge fan of Maiden, but I respect them and their work. Maybe it's time for Ozzfest to go the way of the dodo. It's been fun, but you've gotta know when to say when. Ozzy should have stayed retired after the "No More Tears" album, but the demand was just too great. Surely after the reality show he and his family have more than enough money now to last a good long time. I'd rather see him ride off into the sunset than keep going and create more incidents like this to foster ill will between himself and his fans.

Wow, a flurry of realistic comments after all those Iron Maiden fans. I just wanted to say in light of all those polarized comments that it's a shame Sharon is so easy to attack and that she has partially discredited herself or offered up a weakened argument on the occasions she's spoken out. Despite that, she does have some valid points. Neither side is completely innocent and many of these pro-Maiden people are just as bad as the people they are vehemently attacking.
Ozzfest is just that - a festival. No one band, especially of that age/era, is likely to fill up those venues. Sure, a lot more geezers came out to see the legendary Iron Maiden, and I bet some young people did too, but I'm sure many came to see Sabbath too. There's no point to start a pissing contest. As Sharon said, they have that many people every year (without Maiden). There are a lot of good bands that could have filled that spot, like they've done year after year.

I for one wouldn't even pay the $40 something (after fees) I paid for a Ozzfest lawn "seat" just to see Maiden, much less the price of a pavilion seat.
Sure, the whole incident was wrong. It comes down to 2 wrongs don't make a right and Sharon should have taken the high moral road. But what's done is done. And to top it off, both sides have done nothing but spin their stories with half-truths and self promotion, making a credible middle of the road truth even hard to find. That's my take on the whole thing.

Here's what makes me suspicious of the things Sharon is accusing Bruce of. People have been posting reviews of Ozzfest online all over the internet for the entire tour, but no one has said anything about this smack that Bruce suposedly said. How he could have kept saying this sh** at all these shows and none of the fans mentioned it? It would have been big news.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, sharron relly ruined my respect for Ozzfest. I saw not one but three concerts this year, and it was my first year EVER attending Ozzfest. I came for Maiden and I stayed for Ozzy but, alas it will not be part of my holidays next year. I am appaled that the behaviour on behalf of "the real iron maiden " would ruin a concert for 46,000 fans. And Maiden wins my vote here. Sharron sucks. I hope Ozzfest pays for this.
P.S. In three concerts I never hear Bruce say a word about Ozzy. But, alot about how Corperate America keeps Iron Maiden out. Which is true. They are HUGE in europe cause music is not bought there. It is owned but the people.

You make a very good point! Several of us were checking out the Ozzfest reviews all summer, and NONE that we saw mentioned ANYTHING Bruce said bad about the Ozz! You would think that if that was really happening SOMEBODY WOULD HAVE MENTIONED IT!
Most of the critic reviews and fans agreed that Maiden stole the show, NIGHT AFTER NIGHT, and I think that most people saw that for themselves, even the ones who LIVE 4 Ozzy!. Mos critics agreed that it is time for Ozzy and Black Sabbath to retire.
I think most of the realistic Metal Fans can agree to that, especially if they saw things like what happened in Seattle,Phoenix, and San Bernadino, just to mention a few.
It really s u c k s to see a Great Metal God stumbling and slurring through the set like that. No disrespect to Ozzy, but he really did suck. The sound system s u c k e d too. And most of the Ozzfest crew were freakin' a s s h o l e s!
Also, the reviews mentioned that there were times when Ozzy could not perform, and that Bruce either filled in for him with Sabbath, or else Maiden played a longer set. You die-hard Ozzy/Sabbath fans need to face the truth!
Bruce may have a big mouth on him, but at least he tells it like it is and doesn't try to "manipulate the truth" like Sharon, as METAL MOM pointed out.
METAL MOM, you made some extremely good points too, and did it with style and class. Unlike Sharon and all of the punk a s s losers who post moronic messages! Your kids are so lucky to have a Kick- a s s lady like you in their lives! I see that you take them to shows like Gigantour and such. I saw maiden at Reading festival and for all those who missed the complete set and had to listen to them with a crap sound system, YOU MISSED OUT BIG TIME. maiden may be old but they just keep on getting better and better. If i was at ozzfest that night i would sign a petition to sue Sharon Osbourne because that just aint on, cutting a performance short for personal reasons. As for ozzy being the prince of darkness, in the 80s he wore spandex more glittery than bruce ever did! As for ozzy being coperate, so is maiden, but at least they make awesome music to affirm their iconic status rather than a really annoying reality show. Dance of death was a musical masterpiece! I personally find it hard to believe that Bruce could openly diss ozzy or sabbath while on tour considering that sabbath was one of steve harris' biggest influences. And all in all Bruce may be the front man but he is not maiden, when it comes down to it Steve Harris is maiden and he's still the best bassist in what they call in America, 'heavy metal'. any way i totally agree about the whole reveiews not saying a thing about what happened. if ozzfest (or sharon i should say ) knew anything about metal, they would know that bruce says those things in EVERY SHOW!!! all the shows i've been to had that same rant and i doubt he said anything about ozzy! if she did feel offended by the truth bruce was spitting, then she should've TALKED with him about it right away and not "take the berating and bullsh** for 20 shows" and act like a douche.

Hey D I P S H I T maybe you think Black Sabbath was all that ever existed back in the day, so let me be the first to mention just a couple of names to you like, hmmm, I don;t know, JIMI HENDRIX or LED ZEPPELIN!! Is it possible that they were around about the same time (if not before) Black Sabbath?? Why don't you jump in your time machine and go find out??
